Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: So I noticed. And I see Anand won with the DIRP, while Topalov lost with it. This additional versatility may well be the decisive factor.

Phony Benoni: My one close encounter with a professional wrestler came after a U.S. Open. I was catching a 5:00 A.M. shuttle bus to the airport when an fellow known as Earthquake rumbled on. He was another of those random 500-pounders whose signature move was sitting on the opponent.

He was my nephew's favorite wrestler, and I briefly considered asking for an autograph. Very briefly. Then I looked at my watch, at his face, and moved a couple of more aisles away.

<Travis> I saw a documentary about Andre. Consider yourself lucky. Had he gotten riled, the gun would have done you no good. Once four guys heckled him a bit too much at a restaurant. He followed them as they rushed to their car and tried to drive away. Tried. He grabbed the car by the back bumper, stopped it dead, and flipped it over with on its side. With all four guys inside.

Apr-28-10  Jim Bartle: Ah, I would have walked up to him and said, "Hey, wrestling's fake!!"
Apr-28-10  Travis Bickle: Here's another wrestler you would never want to mess with. Dick The Bruiser. He was King in Chicago!

Apr-29-10  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Careful! Remember what happened to John Stossel when he asked "Dr. D" David Schulz about wrestling being a fake.

To paraphrase Jacques Barzun, "He who would understand America must understand pro wrestling."

Phony Benoni: All year, the Detroit fans have been screaming for the hide of catcher Gerald Laird, who is batting only .152, and demanding that rookie Alex Avila start in his place to add some punch to the lineup.

Thing is, they're doing this even though Avila is hitting .097.

Forget the Mendoza Line. We need to find out if these guys are shampooing with Herbel Essence.

Apr-29-10  A.G. Argent: Jim, I've lost track, has Randy Johnson retired?
Apr-29-10  Jim Bartle: Yep, Johnson retired after getting his 300th.

As expected, the Giants and Phils split the two games pitched by Lincecum and Halladay. Giants beat Halladay (5 runs) and the Giants' bullpen lost after Lincecum left with a 4-1 lead in the ninth.

I looked up Laird's record. He's had a couple of good years, but I thought he had been a much better hitter over his career. Maybe I was fooled a little because he's very fast for a catcher.

Phony Benoni: A rarity from the Mets - Braves game on Sunday:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/gametr...

Note the line for Raul Valdes, who got into the box score as a pitcher despite not officially facing a batter or getting an out. He came on in the 6th and threw one pitch, whereupon the game was stopped and eventually cut short due to rain.

Oh, speaking of Randy Johnson reminds me that he had a chance to be a four decade player had he not retired. So far, <Ken Griffey Jr., Jamie Moyer, and Omar Vizquel> have accomplished the feat. Neither John Smoltz nor Garry Sheffield have yet played this year, but there are rumors that Smoltz will return and I would be very surprised if someone didn't get desperate enough to bring in Sheffield.

Phony Benoni: An interesting position opening was posted on one of my library listservs today:

<Manager of Library Collections National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum
Cooperstown, NY>

Sounds promising.

<Experience Required: Expert knowledge of collections management, library systems and technologies, descriptive practices and standards, and access issues for special collections. Minimum of 4 years professional library experience with progressively increasing administrative and supervisory responsibility. Experience with implementation and oversight of a digital asset management program as it relates to library collections. Knowledge of and passion for the history of baseball desirable. The position will report to the Director of Collections.>

Well, I've got the passion for the history of baseball part. Maybe they'll overlook my weaknesses in some of the other areas.

<Skills Required: Ability to work and train in an automated archive, library, and museum environment. Strong verbal and written communications skills, attention to detail, and ability to operate in a flexible, team-based work environment.

Degrees Preferred: Masters Degree in Library and Information Science or related degree.>

Okay, okay, I've got that. What's the catch?

<Primary Duties include:

Supervises library staff in the manuscript, photograph, recorded media, and technical services departments.

Provides expertise and leadership for all systems and technology issues in the library and museum collection areas.

Responsible for managing current library and collections management systems, and for overseeing the integration of emerging technologies.>

Oh, I get it. "Supervisory" and "Leadership" and "Management" are code words for the poor souls who have to deal with personnel problems and office politics, and never have time to actually play around with the fun stuff. Forget about it.

Apr-29-10  Jim Bartle: Hey PB, you manage this page pretty well!

Bill James' book on the Hall of Fame has long chapters on the men who built up and catalogued the collections at the Hall. Pretty interesting, and a lot of politics involved.

Watching NY vs. Orioles in Baltimore. And Derek Jeter just beat out a true Baltimore chop, high bounce off home plate.

I remember seeing one in 1959 at Seals Stadium, and my parents had to work to get me to understand it wasn't a pop out. First game I ever saw Willie McCovey, maybe two weeks after they called him up. Tripled off the centerfield wall in the first, and Cepeda drove him in with the chop.

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Glen Hobbie was a decent pitcher, albeit with some control problems.

Apr-29-10  Jim Bartle: That's it! I'd forgotten the Giants didn't score another run all night, difficult in that tiny park.

Do the Yankees have a chance to have the entire starting infield in the All-Star Game? Cano and Texeira are looking pretty good, though Cano is no wizard on the DP. (2 homers and a double tonight.)

How many times has this happened? I know the Cards started Boyer, Groat, White and Javier in 1963, though Javier was subbing for injured Mazeroski.

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Starting pitchers in '63 were immortals Jim O'Toole and Ken McBride.
