Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <JB> The first goaltender to wear a mask full time was Jacques Plante in 1959. Before that time they were used only very occasionally, usually to protect an injury. The last maskless goaltender retired in 1974. (I'm trying to avoid saying the breed died out.)
May-25-10  Jim Bartle: Mets vs. Philadelphia tonight.

Knuckleballer Dickey vs. Jamie Moyer.

It's bound to be a long game. Just from ball going from mound to plate.

May-25-10  Jim Bartle: It was a night game, so the sundial wasn't an option.
May-26-10  hangingenprise: phony: i should mention this since travis has mentioned that the blackhawks are in the cup, theee flyers are skating for the cup
and the blackhawks are just showing
up!
it is so on! who are those hockey players flying by those hawks on skates?
it is theee.....flyers

Phony Benoni: Oh, who cares about hockey any more. In Detroit, everyone is in mourning because Steve Yzerman has left to become GM at Tampa Bay. We wish him the best, but after 27 years with the team it will leave a void.

Phony Benoni: Speaking of hockey, which is the northernmost franchise in Major League Baseball?
May-27-10  Jim Bartle: I'll fall into what I assume is your trap: Toronto.
May-28-10  benjinathan: twins?
May-28-10  benjinathan: Mariners? Final answer

Phony Benoni: Seattle it is, and by a good margin. Here are the, so to speak, Top Ten:

1. Seattle 47:37
2. Minneapolis 44:49
3. Toronto 43:40
4. Milwaukee 43:02
5. Boston 42:21
6. Detroit 42:20
7. Chicago 41:50
8. Cleveland 41:28
9. New York 40:47
10.Pittsburgh 40:27

The numbers are degrees and minutes of latitude. If you're wondering about Denver, they come in 12th at 39:45, behind Philadelphia at 39:57.

The five southernmost are Miami, St. Petersburg, Houston, San Diego, Atlanta.

The Pacific Northwest sticks up more than certainly I thought. For instance, Portland, Oregon is well north of Portland, Maine.

May-28-10  benjinathan: It should have been my first guess. I am from Victoria which is a stone's throw from Seattle (I used to go to a lot of Mariner's games and for a few seasons watched live, on t.v. or on the radio virtually ever game).

But, anyway, I digress. I always joke with people in Ontario when they say they are going "up North" when North here is well South of Victoria/Seattle.

Phony Benoni: I first researched that looking for the northernmost city in the NFL, which is also Seattle. In fact, they are further north than several of the teams in the Canadian Football League.

But here's a new one. Denver, of course, has by far the highest elevation among MLB cities. But who comes in second here?

May-28-10  benjinathan: <But who comes in second here?> Since I barged in on your conversation with <Jim> I will let him take first crack.
May-28-10  Jim Bartle: I guess Phoenix.
May-28-10  benjinathan: This is tough. I like Jim's guess. My guesses are either pirates, reds or twins. I say twins-the start of the mississippi must be higher than the bottom??

Phony Benoni: This is arguable, since cities are not perfectly level. For instance, you could say that Los Angeles is #2, because there is a small mountain range running through the city with a maximum height of 5000'.

So I decided to use Wikipedia's profile of each city, hoping this would at least be consistent. So, once again, the Top Ten (not that pun again!).

1. Denver 5280
2. Phoenix 1117
3. Kansas City 910
4. Minneapolis 830
5. Atlanta 738-1050
6. Pittsburgh 710-1370
7. Cleveland 653
8. Milwaukee 617
9. Arlington 604
10.Detroit 600

Even here there are problems, since Wikipedia gave ranges for Atlanta and Pittsburgh. But it seems pretty clear that Phoenix is indeed #2.

How did you guess that? I've been in Phoenix, spending two weeks in August during the 1978 US Open. (It was a dry 115.) At any rate, I could see mountains from my hotel room, so I guessed it might have a high overall elevation.

Kansas City sort of surprised me, but the city is built on high bluffs surrounding the confluence of a couple of rivers; sort of a Grand Canyon effect. Detroit's elevation explains my frequent lapses of concentration. In fact, if I wasn't so high up, I would have figured out that excuse long ago.

Of course, these are all jokes compared to Peru.

Phony Benoni: Miguel Cabrera returned to the team tonight after missing a couple of days for the birth of his second child. He celebrated by driving in all four Tigers' runs with three homers.

Unfortunately, the Tigers lost, 5-4.

Maybe Cabrera should have married the OctoMom.

Phony Benoni: Once again, it's time for the Nickname Game! This time I'll make it easy for you: just give the real first names of these five Hall-of-Famers

Chief Bender
Chick Hafey
Gabby Hartnett
Dazzy Vance
Rube Waddell

To make it even easier, here are the first names in alphabetical order:

Charles
Charles
Charles
Charles
George

I hereby guarantee you will get at least three of five right. Who says we can't all be above average?

May-29-10  Jim Bartle: I think Waddell was George. I'll work on the others.
May-29-10  Deus Ex Alekhina: I think the Blackhawks are playing the Flyers sometime today. Last year about this time, Travis asked who to bet on for the Stanley cup. I wonder who he is betting on this year.
May-29-10  Jim Bartle: What happened here? I flipped past the Cleveland-Yankees game, as soon as I saw it was 9-3 Yanks with Sabathia going. And now I see it's 13-10 Cleveland?

Phony Benoni: Looks like Sabathia came out after 6, and the Yankee bullpen collapsed in the 7th.

May-29-10  Jim Bartle: Also just saw this: Cleveland starter David Huff got hit on the head with a line drive from A-Rod, looks bad. Stretchered off after five minutes.
