Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

May-23-10  Jim Bartle: I looked at Kiner's career as well, and 1947 jumped out at me. I thought he must have been MVP unless it was one of Musial's great years.

But the NL winner that year was Braves 3B Bob Elliott.

Elliott: .317, 93 runs, 22 HR, 113 RBI
Kiner: .311, 118 runs, 51 HR, 127 RBI

Now I know 3B is a tougher position than LF, but how can you say Elliott was more valuable than Kiner? In fact, I read he wasn't even second, though I haven't found the voting.

Phony Benoni: A short biography of Kiner, indicating he had back problems in his later years.

As for other sluggers with good BB-K ratios, Ted Williams leaps to mind. Nearly 3-1 for his career:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/p...

In 1941, when he hit .406, he had 147 walks to 27 strikeouts.

Phony Benoni: 1947 MVP voting in the National League:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/a...

I would guess the big strike against Kiner was that the Pirates finished last.

May-23-10  Jim Bartle: Fascinating stuff. I see Johnny Mize clearly had a better year than Kiner, in any case.

keypusher: <Phony Benoni> Ted Williams, of course I should have thought of him.

Re MVP, I was surprised to read that Babe Ruth only won once, in 1923. But it turns out they didn't have the award in 1920 and 1921, in 1922 Ruth had a bad year, and until 1930 the AL rule was that previous winners were ineligible!

May-23-10  Jim Bartle: Stan Musial struck out only 700 times in 23 years (1600 walks), and though he never hit 40 homers in a season, did have 475 in his career.

Seems when Williams has done something unusual or noteworthy, it's a good idea to look up Musial as well.

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/pla...

Today Albert Pujols strikes out a lot less than most power hitters (about 60 times a year), but still more than these other guys.

May-23-10  Travis Bickle: Hey Bartle why are talking lousy stinking baseball the Blackhawks are going to the Stanley Cup Daddy!!!

Turn it up you Sportsfans!!

keypusher: Strat-o-matic -- I had the 1978 edition when I was a kid. Don't think I ever found anyone to play it with. I liked the Royals because they had four good (but not great) starting pitchers and a bunch of guys with high (but not outrageously high) batting averages and decent (but not extraordinary) power. They were the Lake Wobegon of baseball teams. The Yankees were a much more variable bunch.

May-24-10  A.G. Argent: Pretty sad about Jose Lima. Heart attack at 37. Most people seemed to love Lima Time.
May-24-10  Jim Bartle: I remember Lima most for being resented by opposing players for showing them up on the field. He said, "Baseball is a short career, and I'm going to enjoy every single day. Everybody should. If you don't like what I do, take me deep. You can dance around at every base if you want, I don't mind. I'm not going to stop being who I am."

That was in 1999. Everybody did start taking him deep in 2000 and for several years afterward.

Phony Benoni: Lima's death was a real shocker around here. He had two stints with the Tigers, and is remembered fondly by sportscasters and fans as a colorful character. He showed up for the Tigers' Friday night game in LA, and looked perfectly fine.

But truthfully, overall his was a mediocre career. He had two good years for Houston in 1998 and 1999 (16-8 and 21-10), and a surprise 13-5 year for the Dodgers in 2004. However, even at the best of times, he was an extra base machine. This game is probably the worst example--and note that it was not played at Wrigley Field.

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

In Lima's defense, it should be noted he had more strikeouts than home runs allowed.

May-24-10  Travis Bickle: Phony & Deus Ex Alekhina, knowing how much you guys appreciate the Chicago Blackhawks here's a couple of prime photo's for you guys scrapbooks.

I especially like the high-tech zambonis near the end.

Seriously, Travis, I'm not unhappy about the Black Hawks winning. I was rooting for San Jose, but only because they beat the Wings and it looks better if my teams lose only to the eventual champion. Now, if Montreal can just make it too, that would be a perfect finals.

keypusher: <Phony Benoni> Too cool! Very slow-paced compared to modern hockey, I thought -- maybe they didn't have lines in those days?

Good seats to an NFL game were very easy to come by in Chicago in 1929:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SitU...

May-24-10  Travis Bickle: Nice footage Dr. Benoni! Hey Phony did The Babe play Hockey? I thought I seen Ruth out there on the ice in a Blackhawks jersey. ; P
May-24-10  Deus Ex Alekhina: The tradition in Detroit, going back to the 1950's, was to throw an octopus or two onto the ice in Lord Stanley's Cup finals. I suggest you guys try flinging a Chicago-style pizza (with 8 or 16 slices) onto the ice, Travis. So if the Blackhawks win does that make up for the Cubs?
May-24-10  Jim Bartle: So the last time the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup, the stars were Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull and the ironman, Glenn Hall.

Hall played every game for years, said the worst he took were the practice shots from Hull.

May-24-10  Jim Bartle: Check Hall's minutes played from 1955 through 1962: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_...
May-24-10  Travis Bickle: <Deus Ex Alekhina> Nah we got a lake close by, we can throw the lousy stinking Asian carp onto the ice LOL!

No way does it make up for the Cubs. They ripped my heart out of my chest in 2003 when they CHOKED to the marlins with only 5 OUTS TO GO!! I still haven't recovered.

May-24-10  Jim Bartle: We've noticed.
May-24-10  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Jim I read recently that Bobby Hull in pre-game warm-ups would fire blazing slapshots high over the crossbar to intimidate the opposing goalies. ; P
May-24-10  Jim Bartle: Did goalies wear masks back then?
May-24-10  Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Nah the goalies figured even with a mask a head shot from Hull would be certain death anyway. ; P
