 | | Phony Benoni: <just a kid> I don't know he fares agaisnt the rest of the league, but Cy Pavano always seems to stifle the Tigers. |
Jul-11-10 | | just a kid: Pavano has the best ERA of any starting pitcher on the Twins but it is something like 3.78 |

 | | keypusher: God may be immortal, but apparently His Voice is not. R.I.P. Mr. Sheppard. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Which reminds that the box score of Sheppard's first game, which we talked about back here: Phony Benoni chessforum Is now available.

Jul-12-10 | | playground player: There was nothing quite like Bob Sheppard's voice floating out over the field at Yankee Stadium. "Ladies and gentlemen... Now entering Heaven from New York City... Please give a warm welcome to Mr. Bob Sheppard..." I would love to hear that! |
Jul-12-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, here's a band that will be bigger than Elvis, bigger than The Beatles!! And I thought it only appropriate to put it here on your forum! Here they are 'The Baseballs'!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM21... |
Jul-12-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> You think they were big? See if you can find a clip of the Basketballs. |

 | | LIFE Master AJ: A Rubesov vs G Borisenko, 1960 Jul-12-10 LIFE Master AJ: <<Phony Benoni> <This is a game <<worth studying deeply.> And when such a game <is entertaining as well,>> what more could you ask?>>
I apologize for my comment, I was NOT trying to demean this game! I just took about 10 minutes to run through it ... and its so wild, and the fur really flies ... all I could do was wonder if anything was sound or correct. Of course it was a fun game. Thanks for the background on both the players, I was aware that Borisenko was quite a good player ... both in OTB and postal chess. |
Jul-13-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <LIFE Master AJ> And I guess I took your comment a little too seriously. It's unusual for me to take anything seriously, but these things happen. Oh, well. No harm, no foul. |

Jul-13-10 | | Jim Bartle: And angels are preparing their resumes... |

 | | Phony Benoni: Can't say I loved Steinbrenner. Or liked him. Or even particularly respected him. But I do know we often wind up missing our lightning rods more than we realize, for then we have to find someone else to blame. |
Jul-13-10 | | Jim Bartle: I agree that it's fun to have villains to root against. There's not all that much excitement when all the competition is among nice, respectful people. |

Jul-13-10 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> The New York press had a field day with George Steinbrenner, gleefully casting him as the villain in every Yankees story. Not until years later did we hear about his unfailing charity (yes, he was a soft touch). And it took even longer to appreciate his insane devotion to winning--he really didn't care how much it cost to bring a pennant to Yankee Stadium. In an age of baseball run by bean counters and computers, Steinbrenner was the last of a breed. R.I.P., George--no one could possibly have been as bad as they made you out to be. |
Jul-13-10 | | Jim Bartle: But Steinbrenner's last great run, basically 1996-2003, was not fueled by high-salaried free agents. Maybe Knoblauch, but none of the others on the field. Giambi at the end, but he wasn't such a big contributor. Clemens as well, but the Yankees already had an excellent pitching staff. The heart of those teams were original Yankees plus inexpensive pickups like O'Neill and Brosius. |

 | | WannaBe: If you had told me, that a pitcher from Colorado and a pitcher from Tampa Bay was going to be the starting pitchers in an All-Star game, say oh, five years ago, I'd laugh so hard, I would end up lookin' like <technical draw> !!!! |
Jul-13-10 | | hms123: <Wannabe> Hey! Watch it! That pitcher from Tampa Bay is from Vanderbilt University. (where I teach) :-)
(p.s., and so is Pedro Alvarez) |
Jul-13-10 | | Travis Bickle: What would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad is Colorado and Tampa Bay have built more solid baseball teams in their relatively short existence than The Cubs have since about 1969! I take that back, Colorado made an appearance in a World Series in 2007. So both franchises have better baseball programs than The Chicago Cubs in 102 years!! |
Jul-13-10
 | | WannaBe: <hms123> Pedro Alvarez teaches at Vandy? =) |
Jul-13-10
 | | WannaBe: <Travis Bickle> Not to mention how long it took for Florida and Arizona to win a World Series, and then have an immediate garage sale... |
