Jul-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: How much did ESPN charge for commercials for the hour? Let's say a million dollars. That's what, about 2% of his yearly income? LeBron could have donated that, or more, and never even felt it. |

Thanks for the link! I'm not sure what <Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there> means, particularly in this context (South Beach=heaven? Cleveland=death?), but I'm stealing it anyway. Pretty poor choice of font by Gilbert, though. Black Gothic would have been my choice. And someone should disable his all caps key. |

 | | keypusher: <I don't know why so many people--including myself--are feeling so angry about this. We no longer blink an eye when an owner builds a team of superstars, so why should we be upset when the players do it?> Maybe I've got this completely wrong, but that is the one aspect of this fiasco that I like. As you know better than anyone, for most of the last 100+ years professional athletes have been little more than chattel. Kind of nice to see these three (maybe four, if the rumors about Chris Paul are true) say "screw it, <we're> going to decide where we play." |
Jul-09-10 | | A.G. Argent: But, wait a minute, there's more; this post sums it up very accurately. Stuff I didn't know about Gilbert and putting it very succcinctly and spot on about James and the whole circus.

Jul-09-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I can't really blame LeBron for setting up the combination in Miami. But the word circus describes it perfectly. It could have been handled a lot more diplomatically with far fewer hard feelings, but then ESPN probably couldn't have gotten all that advertising revenue. I've had some respect for James in the past; he seemed like a hard player and a decent guy. Not now. And belonging to the overdog to top all overdogs, it's hard to see anyone outside of Miami rooting for him. I have to give Dan Gilbert a partial pass. It's been an incredibly frustrating couple of months for him; first the play-off disappointment, then the Tom Izzo fiasco, and now this. But still, he should be used to this sort of thing. After all, this is a transplanted Detroiter living in Cleveland. |
Jul-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: One positive thing about James is the way he helps the press during the season. He realizes while on the road that the local writers and TV and radio reporters will want to talk to him. So he arranges a time before the game to talk with them. Works for him, as he doesn't have reporters dogging him, and works for the press because they get their material. |

Jul-10-10 | | YouRang: Wow - Just a moment ago I flipped over to mlb.com and noticed that there was one game still going. The Texas Rangers were leading the Orioles 6-2 with 2 out in the 9th inning. But the Orioles have the bases loaded, and up comes Corey Patterson to hit a grand slam to tie it up! They weren't done: The next 3 batters single, double, and walk to reload the bases, before they finally made the last out. Now the Rangers have to come up in the botton of the 9th. I suppose they're disappointed to have to bat again, but then again they might be grateful that they're not trailing... |
Jul-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: And Philadelphia scored 5 in the ninth to tie Cincinnati, with two homers, then Howard hit a two-run homer to win it in the tenth. I was watching the game with Cincinnati's announcers. Complete verbatim call: "See you for tomorrow's game." |
Jul-10-10 | | YouRang: Orioles win 7-6 on a top of the tenth homer by Jake Fox. The Rangers went down in order in the bottom of the inning, and swallow a tough loss. |
Jul-10-10 | | YouRang: A few wild games tonight. Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Colorado all had whopping comebacks. |

Jul-10-10
 | | Phony Benoni: There may be a lot of interesting happenings this weekend, especially with pitching. With the All-Star break coming up, a lot of starters may be making spot relief appearances. |
Jul-10-10 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: As for college b-ball coaches failing in the NBA - there was the choking of P J Carlesimo (who was asst to Coach K) & also well known in the Detroit area Dickie V (Dick Vitale) moderately successful as coach of U of Detroit, but more known as a Bill Veeck-type showman, who was hired by the lowly Pistons & never amounted to a hill of beans. |
Jul-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: Vitale didn't even make it a full season with the Pistons, right? And Carlesimo was actually a fairly successful coach, not a Pitino or a Floyd. Of course many good NBA coaches were college coaches at one time, just not at high-profile universities. I saw a photo once at University of North Dakota, with coaches and assistants Bill Fitch, Phil Jackson, Jimmie Rodgers and I think one other. Here's a similar photo, from Jackson's playing days, with Fitch and Rodgers: http://espn.go.com/media/nba/2005/1... |

Jul-10-10 | | Travis Bickle: Phony they had a color shot of 'The Babe' they didn't use on Babe Ruth Day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODnV... |

Jul-10-10
 | | Phony Benoni: If you've seen Vitale's act as a commentator, you know exactly what kind of a coach he was. Generally, Vitale promoted himself rather than his teams. He did last a full season plus part of the next with the Pistons. His downfall was mainly due to a player transaction that did not work out very well. Here's Wikipedia's summary: <Vitale coached the Detroit Pistons of the NBA for the 1978-79 season, leading them to a 30-52 (.366) record.[1] On Nov. 8, 1979, Pistons owner Bill Davidson came to Vitale's house and told him that the Pistons were making a coaching change. It was twelve games into 1979-80 season, after the Pistons struggled to a 4-8 start. The primary reason for Vitale's downfall with the Pistons was the maneuver that brought Bob McAdoo to Detroit. M.L. Carr’s decision to sign with Boston as a free agent in 1979 spawned a transaction in which the Pistons, entitled to compensation for Carr, demanded Bob McAdoo, who the Celtics were looking to unload due to injuries. The Celtics took two 1980 first-round draft picks (in addition to Carr) from the Pistons in exchange for McAdoo in a combination free agent signing/trade. One became the first overall pick in the 1980 draft. Boston would trade that pick (Joe Barry Carroll) plus the #13 pick to the Warriors in exchange for Robert Parish and the #3 pick (Kevin McHale).> |

Jul-10-10 | | just a kid: *sigh* twins lose again. Gardenhire needs to be fired |
Jul-10-10 | | just a kid: I do not respect Lebron anymore. He orders an hour special just to say he's leaving Cleveland. Just say you're leaving and LEAVE! he is so self-centered and orders an hour special for his decision. And what pisses me off? ESPN Loved it. That day,all it was about was Lebron, where is he going?what is he going to do? how much money is he going to make? I don't care! I want to see highlights from everything in sports! whatever happened to the old ESPN and Sportscenter? I agree with what Gilbert said. He needed to say it. He did give up. He was self-centered,he was narcissitic. I don't think he is a traitor,I got nothing against him leaving Cleveland. I don't agree with the way he handled it |
Jul-11-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <just a kid> That's odd. There's a vocal minority around here who insist Leyland needs to be fired. In fact, I checked some message boards from other teams, and every manager from Tony LaRussa to Bobby Cox is in danger of being lynched by angry fans. It seems that managing a baseball club, like driving a car or pressing an elevator button, is something everybody thinks they can do better than everyone else. |
Jul-11-10 | | Jim Bartle: Once at dinner after a loss, Whitey Herzog´s brother-in-law asked him why he let his pitcher pitch to the other team´s slugger. The slugger hit a home run. Herzog: Were you at the game?
BiL: Yes.
Herzog: Then why didn´t you come down to the dugout and tell me the guy was going to hit a homer. Then I would have changed pitchers. |
Jul-11-10 | | just a kid: <Phony Benoni> I just never see us winning a world series with him. I remember one game where Liriano was pitching great, but he had like 100 pitches so Gardenhire took him out. Then we ended up losing. Stuff like that can make or break a team |

Stuff like that can make or break a team> Losing a star pitcher can break a team too. If the only way the Twins can win is have Liriano throw 120 pitches per appearance, they have bigger problems than the identity of the manager. I don't know that much about Gardenhire, but I suspect his biggest failing is that he doesn't manage the Yankees. If he were managing the Yankees, we would learn what a brilliant manager he really is. <Jim Bartle> Great story! Does anyone here know anything about the basketball salary cap? Do the contracts the South Beach Three have apparently agreed to give the Heat room to get the other players they need? |
Jul-11-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <keypusher> The Heat must have plenty of room under the cap to fill out their roster. They haven't needed to offer me a contract yet. |
Jul-11-10 | | just a kid: <keypusher> Because Liriano is the closest thing we have to an ace. Slowey,Blackburn, and Baker are middle of the rotation pitchers at best |
