 | | Phony Benoni: Yeah, Tim Wakefield would be due by then. |
Oct-06-10 | | Jim Bartle: It looked to me as if the Reds were swinging at a lot of bad pitches in the last few innings, and letting a lot of clear strikes go. Seemed that Halladay was throwing so many strikes, and getting the calls on the corner, that the Cincinnati hitters were just convinced every pitch would be a strike. It was funny how Ruiz, the catcher, fumbled and fell down fielding that last dribbler. I think he was so nervous he could hardly function. |

 | | WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> You mean Wakefield III... =) |

Oct-08-10 | | technical draw: This guy Adam has had too many martinis:
http://www.suite101.com/content/fiv... Best of five series 2-0 in favor of yankees. |
Oct-08-10 | | Jim Bartle: Waaaay too many off-days in the first round of the playoffs. Two series not playing today, and two more off tomorrow, a Saturday? TV wants people to watch every game, and never have two being played at the same time, but this is ridiculous. It gives a huge advantage to teams with one or two really strong starters, but relatively weak in the rest of the rotation. Going back a few years, Minnesota won the Series in 1987 with Viola and Blyleven starting 9 of their twelve postseason games, and they lost all three started by others (Straker, basically). This is a big change from the regular season, possible only because of so many off-days, and not a fair test of the teams. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Well, if the playoffs are a fair test only if they reflect the results of the season, why bother with them? Why not decide the pennant winners by tournament play rather than a match? I prefer to think of the two systems as requiring different skills, and the winner being the team that best combines those skills. You don't get to the playoffs without a deep, all-around team, and you don't win them unless your stars live up to their billing. That being said, the schedules could be better synchronized. There have to be more travel days, what with two game serieses and everybody on the move. But games could go on at the same time, particularly with the technology available to viewers today. That sort of system sure hasn't hurt NCAA basketball. |
Oct-09-10 | | Travis Bickle: I think the football season will end before the World Series is played! ; P |
Oct-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: At least one of the best-of-five series is now scheduled for eight days. Too much! Sorry to see the Giants lose last night, but since it was Rick Ankiel that beat them it didn't seem so bad. Ankiel has been through a lot, worked hard to be a major league outfielder after his pitching problems. And I've never seen a player just plain happier than Ankiel in the dugout afterward. Good for him. |
Oct-09-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony this kicker needs to work on his hang time. ; P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4fv... |
Oct-09-10
 | | Phony Benoni: I think a few of his teammates are more likely to work on their hang time, courtesy of the coaching staff. |
Oct-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: Must be a misprint:
Detroit 31 St. Louis 6 |
Oct-10-10 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: But the Lions are the best 0-4 team in all of football (how many times have we heard that here in Motown over the last many years). They will get off the schnide today. |
Oct-10-10
 | | Phony Benoni: It was a misprint. Now it's Detroit 44, St. Louis 6. Unfortunately, the Lions' top receiver, Calvin Johnson, has a shoulder injury. There's always something. |
Oct-10-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony it wasn't pretty but will take it. Bears 23 Panthers 6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u8b... |
Oct-10-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Have the Bears ever played a game that wasn't ugly? |
Oct-10-10 | | Travis Bickle: Well Phony I guess it depends on which team you're on. For example if you're a Lion and getting smashed by Butkus all day long it would be ugly. ; P |
Oct-10-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Jim I hope for Mike Singletary's sake the Niners win a few ballgames. If not I think 'Ol Mike may just got Beserk! LOL P.S. Coach Ditka interviewed his former player Coach Singletary a few weeks back and asked Singletary how his team would fair against The Saints. An extremely intense Singletary replied we will score against them and we will stop them! He told Ditka to bring his 3D Glasses!! LMAO!!! |
Oct-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: Less than 100 yards passing <total>, combined, in the Chicago-Carolina game. Wonder when that last occurred? |
Oct-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: Great box score line from today's SF-Atlanta game:
WP: Romo 1-0 0.2 innings ERA 40.50
A classic vulture job. Romo comes in with a 1-0 lead in the 8th, man on first one out. Gives up a home run to the first hitter, then retires the next two. Giants score 2 in the ninth. Wilson retires Atlanta in bottom of the ninth. Romo is the winning pitcher! Sanchez goes 7.1 innings, gives up one run. No decision. |
Oct-10-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle: Less than 100 yards passing <total>, combined, in the Chicago-Carolina game. Wonder when that last occurred?> Bears vs Niners 1985. ; P |
Oct-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: <Bears vs Niners 1985.> Makes sense. |
Oct-10-10 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> I was just kidding but I do remember a game way back when The Bears faced the Forty Niners on a Monday Night game, which I think I got drunk on in a bar! ; P I remember the Bears played a great defensive game shutting down Montana until the 4th quarter when Joe got the Forty Niners within striking distance. The Niners field goal kicker missed and the Bears won 10-9. |
Oct-11-10 | | A.G. Argent: Definitely pulling for the Giants tonight, Jim. Hope Bumgarner throws the game of his life. They were quite lucky last night but so be it. Got 2 more to do it with one back in SF with the Freak if need be. But the Phils have become a bit of the cliched juggernaut. Gonna be VERY hard to beat in a 7 game series in Philly. By anyone. And who'd athunk it about the Rays. Those guys do amaze. Could be one of those situations where a team gets something going and just can't be beat all the way through the play-offs. But we'll see. They gotta beat Lee first and being at home don't seem to help 'em. O-6 at home post-season. And Travis, sorry but your boy Singletary has GOT to go. He just- does- not- have it! Bluster and tough talk don't automatically make an NFL coach. Last night was embarrasing. |
Oct-11-10 | | crawfb5: How not to make an onside kick:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4fv... |
Oct-11-10 | | Travis Bickle: <A.G. Argent> A.G. Singletary can't play QB. That was the game, the QB panicked on a blitz and got man handled and fumbled the game away. Chris Collinsworth pointed out on the replay that when blitzed you throw in the direction of the blitz to your hot read. All in all I think Mike Singletary has coached very well. He got The Niners up for the Super Bowl Champion Saints where they almost beat them this year. The team plays hard, especially on defense, and after Singletary challenged his QB Alex Smith last night he led two impressive scoring drives. P.S. In the final analysis you may be right that Singletary like former coach Mike Ditka's intense in your face coaching style may be too much for Alex Smith to handle. Certain players like Mike Tomczak, and Jim Harbaugh couldn't take Ditka's tirades, but on the other hand QB Jim McMahon used to mock the coach when he turned his back on him and audibled Ditka's plays once saying, "I called a better play", LOL! The Great Vince Lombardi coached like Singletary but that was a different era.
Maybe you're right, 0-5 pretty much says it all. |
