Oct-11-10 | | Jim Bartle: I don't know about Singletary, and didn't see much of last night's game. I did see Alex Smith just plain drop the ball while being chased but not being touched, a problem he's had in the past. Without that the 49ers probably would have won. The 49ers just don't have a consistent, winning quarterback. |
Oct-12-10 | | dakgootje: <Romo is the winning pitcher! Sanchez goes 7.1 innings, gives up one run. No decision.> I never understood - how do they decide who gets the win? Would expect the one with the lowest ERA for the game - but then closers would often get it which is not the case. Anyway, it is good to see the Giants win the series against the Braves - the Phillies are something else though. Best odds: 9/1 that the Giants win the World series. |
Oct-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: The winning pitcher is the pitcher at the time his team takes the lead for the final time. |
Oct-12-10 | | dakgootje: Ah I see. Then the win/loss record of pitchers is of little importance, because there is a large factor due to run support and the effort of the pitchers after him. Thanks for the clarification :) |

 | | Phony Benoni: <dakgootje> There are a few more complications about determining the winning pitcher. 1) A starting pitcher must pitch at least five innings to qualify for a win, regardless of the score. 2) If a team is behind when the starting pitcher comes out (either before or after five innings) but later rallies, then <JB>'s note applies. 3) If the starting pitcher comes out before five innings when his team is leading and the team never loses the lead, generally the second pitcher is credited with a win. However, if he is ineffective, there is an option for the official scorer to credit the win to a more effective reliever. To clarify this, let's say Tim Linecum starts the game, but has to leave after four innings due to shock because the Giants are ahead 20-0. I come in and face 5 batters, after which the score is 20-5. Travis comes in and pitches perfect baseball the rest of the game. Techinically I would qualify for the win, but no doubt the option would be applied and the win credited to Travis. (Which is fine with me; the Cubs need the wins more than the Tigers.) It's true that starting pitchers don't get as many wins as in the distant past, and the won/loss record of relief pitchers is often a crapshoot, but the record itself is still an important indicator. Bad relief pitching will cost you more wins than losses, so an high percentage of losses indicates a problem. |
Oct-12-10 | | A.G. Argent: Speaking of the Giants, congrats JB. In the NLCS. And they showed a lot of class last night by stopping their already muted celebration and joining the crowd and the Braves in the on-field acknowledgement of Bobby Cox. Good stuff. |

 | | WannaBe: As many, (okay, if not all, of the members of CG knows, I am a big, big Star Trek fan, and of course, of sports, especially the game you call 'beeeesball'....) Just wondering if any of the other CG members have seen this Deep Space Nine episode, from season 7. The title is "Take Me Out to the HoloSuite". Part I: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT0a...
I will leave parts II and others as an exercise... =) |

Oct-14-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony I heard that major league baseball is condidering having 10 teams in the Playoffs as earlier as next year!
That's just too many teams making the playoffs. I think that greed is going to kill this sport. |
Oct-14-10
 | | Phony Benoni: 10 teams? That would add a whole extra round, meaning another week. If they don't want game 7 of the World Series to conflict with Thanksgiving, they'll have to count all the games in spring training. |
Oct-14-10 | | Jim Bartle: A writer I like for the SF Chronicle suggested that two wild-card teams in each league, and they would play a one-game playoff to be able join the other three in the league. His point is that winning the division would then clearly be better than being a wild card, so for example, the Yanks and Rays would have fought it out at the end rather than coasting home. But the same writer had another idea. Saying baseball in Florida is a disaster attendance-wise, with little local interest, he says the Rays and Marlins should be dissolved and their players sent to other teams. Then each league could be divided into two seven-team divisions, with only the division winners going on to the postseason. I like that idea, but it has no chance, of course. |
Oct-14-10 | | Jim Bartle: Really nice set of recordings of the best sportscasters calls: http://joeposnanski.si.com/2010/10/... I liked hearing Cosell's complete call of the Foreman-Frazier fight. But the best was listening to a lot of clips (including the "Holy Roller") of the great Bill King calling Raiders games. King starting announcing the Warriors when they arrived in SF in 1962, and I listened to him for many years. Just a great announcer. "The refs said yes, get your big butt off the field. He does!" |
Oct-15-10
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> obviously, you have not seen this one, where I was playing black, and I made the game winning move, and the announcer was <OUT OF THIS WORLD, OUT, I SAID!!!> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ixw... |
Oct-15-10 | | Jim Bartle: Unless it was mate, it doesn't matter how strong his move was. He didn't press his clock, or write the move down. |
Oct-15-10
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, he was losing anyway. White's bishop pair on f1 and e2 were just too strong. |
Oct-15-10 | | Jim Bartle: You're right!
What's strange is that they obviously took a lot of time and money to set up a realistic looking match: set, spectators, lighting. Then they set up a position that I believe could never occur. |
Oct-15-10 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, while were on the subject of Geiko, I always thought this was just an expression. Just goes to show how wrong you can be sometimes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjGw... |
Oct-15-10 | | A.G. Argent: Jim, back in the 70's, I used to tune in KNBR up here in Portland just to listen to Bill King doing Warrior games. Came in pretty clear most nights. King was amazing. Painted a verbal picture like few others. And when I'd go to Blazer/Warrior games up here, I'd notice King sitting all by himself calling the game and seemingly never moving his head but of course seeing everything. |
Oct-15-10 | | Jim Bartle: Holy Toledo, AG! Yes, King was just great, and a radio guy all the way. Chick Hearn of the Lakers is the only one close to him. No TV for King, and he enjoyed cultivating the Lucifer look. Do you remember him painting verbal pictures of the refs blowing call after call? He was hell on the officials. The Warriors used to play in SF Civic Auditorium, before crowds of 5000 or so. My father and I used to arrive early and talk to King for a few minutes. Nice guy, but intense. King’s partner back then was a guy named Hank Greenwald, not in the same league as a play-by-play guy, but very witty. One time on TV they came back from commercial during the Star Spangled Banner. When it ended Greenwald said, “Those of you with discerning ears may have detected the strains of our national anthem.†|
Oct-15-10 | | Jim Bartle: CJ is getting the better of CC so far. I wonder when was the last postseason game started by pitchers with initials only. |
Oct-16-10
 | | Phony Benoni: You may hate the Yankess, but you have to give them credit. Clutch players with big bats can never be counted out. |

Currently, our library has no books on chess.

 | | OhioChessFan: I was glad to see Halladay get hit a little bit. He pitched a great game against the Reds, but they and the umpire helped him a lot. They would take fastballs down the middle, then swing at breaking balls in the dirt. He got every single close pitch called a strike. Scott Rolen was struck out on a full count on a pitch about 5 inches outside. For all that, it was a fantastic game. But it wasn't all that. |
