Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

  keypusher: <Jim>

Thanks for the beautiful book -- I sent a note, which I hope will arrive before too long. But also just wanted to add that my eight-year-old daughter found the book on my desk the other day and loved it. She was particularly taken with the red-headed bird and the Nazca lines, but she thought everything was terrific.

Jan-28-11  Jim Bartle: Thanks, kp. First I've heard that any arrived in the US. It's been hell to send them ever since I waltzed into the post office in Lima, and found that the cheapest rate to the US would be $40 per book! (My other books are much lighter, I'd forgotten about the difference.) So it's the sporadic "gringo express" for the moment, sending a few with departing gringos headed north.

Book is finished, now it's another big job to get it publicized and distributed. Aaaargh! At least it's not really tourist season, so I can take a little time.

keypusher: <Jim bartle> well, good luck. My daughter just found the Dama de Hielo. Tough explaining human sacrifice to an 8-year-old. :)
Jan-29-11  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Have you written a book? If so, what's the title, and can I see it anywhere on the Internet?

Book publicity--aaagh! I need a publicist, and I don't know how to choose one. Don't want to sign with somebody who'll just take my money and then do nothing. I was on the point of signing up with one, but she suddenly disappeared. (Guess she wouldn't've been a good choice, eh?)

I have unanimous rave reviews for my books, but no publicity... hence no sales to speak of.

I could put a link to your book on my blog or my twitter page, if you like.

Phony Benoni: Nothing special. Just another hoop made with the player's back to the basket:

Jan-29-11  Travis Bickle: Yeah Phony I agree that was just another hoop. Now this kid here made a real basket that Michael Jordan couldn't have made in his Prime!!

Jan-29-11  Jim Bartle: Yes, pp, I have a new book, a photo book of Peru called (what originality!) "Peru in Images/Perú en Imágenes." All the other titles I thought of just sounded kitschy, as I didn't want to use the cliched "diversity," and "A World of Contrasts" was already taken. In any case, the title is clear and anybody seeing it will know what the book is.

I'm just getting it out for sale in Peru, and will start worrying about the US and other countries later this year.

I'm starting to think, assuming sales are good here, that I will need to do a separate printing in the US, as all shipping rates I've found from Peru are astronomical, around $11 per book (weighing 1 kilo exactly), more than double the cost of printing that same book.

Thanks for the offer, pp. I will get back to you when I start distribution in the US. For the moment I will have a simple web page up in a couple of weeks, plus a note with photos on Facebook.

Jan-29-11  Jim Bartle: That high school basket reminds me of the goals Wayne Gretzky scored, standing behind the net and flipping the puck off the goalie's back and into the net. He did intentionally, of course.
Feb-01-11  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Just got the latest sales figures for my books. Maybe you want to stay off my blog, after all--doesn't seem to be doing me much good! Although there is an interesting discussion going on there about the Harry Potter movie...
Feb-01-11  Jim Bartle: Hard to sell a book off a website, unless the subject is red hot or the author is controversial and/or well known. Maybe your distributor (or you?) need to work on promotion.

I just got an initial order from the airport bookstores throughout the country. They cited the prices in dollars, when I gave them prices in soles, effectively tripling the cost to the public. Aaaargh! You have to fight through working with so many inattentive, unimaginative people.

Feb-03-11  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Just ask anybody on this site whether I'm controversial!

Meanwhile, the other night some idiot speeding during an ice storm crashed into my parked car and wrecked it--so the whole idea of me hiring any kind of publicist becomes fantastic.

My publisher really needed to get my books to a distributor, and has not done so.

Feb-03-11  Jim Bartle: Ah, you have a publisher. I sort of assumed you had done it yourself.

You've got to harangue the publisher as much as possible. Just get in the mindset, "I'm frogbert, I'm frogbert," and get after them. Nothing out of line, just keep after them.

The problem of course is that a publisher has many books, and makes decisions about which to promote how much and which way. (Same with bookstores.) You've got to convince them yours is as important as any other.

Reminds of the time I saw comedian Martin Mull in the 70s. He was not happy with the sales of his previous album, and had recently changed companies. He said "Capricorn's strategy of promoting the album by hiding them in the lofts of select barns didn't work out well."

Phony Benoni: I was just trying to remember who won the World Series in 2010, and it took a minute or so. This is normally a sign that Spring training is just around the corner. It had better be!
Feb-04-11  Jim Bartle: Whoever won last year, I highly doubt they will repeat.
Feb-06-11  alachabre: World Series, 2010. Lemme think. I'm guessing it wasn't the Pirates.
Feb-06-11  A.G. Argent: Pirates?! Of course not, don't you remember? It was the Dodgers and yeah man, pitchers and catchers report in two weeks.
Feb-07-11  Jim Bartle: Annals of serious sportswriting, from Peter King of SI:

"When Woodson came out of the shower, the last Packer to do so, his body was severely tilted to the left as he walked very slowly from the large communal bathroom at Cowboys Stadium to his locker. He began dressing, and you felt sorry for him. Because tasks that normally took 20 seconds took five times that. He moved at the pace of an 86-year-old. I timed him putting on his black dress shirt: 97 seconds."

Feb-07-11  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony you mean The Cubs didn't win?
Feb-07-11  Travis Bickle: <alachabre> Great Avatar! HAHA!!
Feb-07-11  Jim Bartle: He gets no respect, I tell ya, no respect at all.
Feb-08-11  brankat: <Phony Benoni> I want to thank You for the game at QA. Despite some mistakes, I thought it was an interesting game. Exciting, certainly a good fight. In a couple of days, or so, I'll post here some comments regarding the game.

Feb-08-11  kudubux: There's no such thing as a perfect game but you both worked out a truly fighting game!
Feb-10-11  crawfb5: Thanks again for the tip on the Lasker book. I picked up a used copy which arrived the other day. I'll be adding some material to the Marshall-Lasker match collection in the near future as time allows.
