 | | perfidious: <Phony Benoni> From shopping at Wal-Mart to the majors, indeed! One particular which was incorrect in that discussion: he named Bob Short, former owner of Rangers, as the other Phils starter who pitched on two days' rest down the stretch-it was, of course, Chris Short. Used to know a girl called Chris Short; nice-looking and had a sister who was even hotter! |

Sep-16-11 | | Jim Bartle: From cnnsi.com:
"When Pablo Sandoval saw Carlos Gonzalez crash into the wall he knew he had a chance at history, so he turned on his afterburners. "When I saw him fall down, that's when I started running hard," Sandoval said. "Halfway between first and second that's when I thought I had a chance to make it." So why wasn't he running hard from the start?

 | | WannaBe: The Giants are 7 games out, why run hard? =) |
|
Sep-16-11 | | Jim Bartle: Watching A's-Tigers. Detroit has a pretty darn good shortstop. |
|
Sep-16-11 | | Jim Bartle: This is great. Star Wars light-saber night at Oakland, and the lights go out. |

 | | WannaBe: Yeah, that Alan Trammell kid, he got potentials... Going to try to make it out Wednesday, for the $2 BART special, Texas-Oakland, 7PM game. My friend, who works for the SF Giants, got free tickets to Presbyterian-Cal game tomorrow. So, I am going to that game, my second visit to AT&T Park in 3 weeks. (Cal's stadium is under-going a renovation http://www.baycitizen.org/sports/st... and they need major donation from <Jim Bartle>!) Pretty much what Cal is doing, is what UCLA's basketball team will do in a few month, a traveling squad, while home arena is undergoing a face-lift. |

 | | Phony Benoni: And how about Doug Fister? Nice mid-season pickup. |
|
Sep-17-11 | | Jim Bartle: The lights going out in Oakland reminds me of a time in the late 70s when Rich Gossage was pitching for the Yankees. He was in his windup once when all the lights went out. When they came back on after about three seconds, the batter was already beside the dugout. |
|
Sep-17-11 | | A.G. Argent: Congratulations, Czar, on the first division flag in 24 years. Hope they go deep in the playoffs. Got a feeling they will. |
|
Sep-17-11 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> *sigh* The baseball season passed me by this year. Somehow the concept of a "seed" in baseball, as if it were some kind of golf or tennis tournament, never caught on with me. But what a pleasure to read a box score from 1964! The legendary Phillies Fold... the genius of Gene Mauch, deciding to slog through September with only two starting pitchers... and wet wood burns the best. |
|
Sep-17-11 | | Jim Bartle: On one of the baseball broadcasts an announcer suggested that it wasn't necessarily best to get a better "seed" in order to meet Philadelphia (this year) in the second round. He said an underdog would have a better chance to beat them in a five-game series, facing Halladay and Lee once and getting lucky, rather than a seven-game series where they'd face both pitchers twice. |
|
Sep-17-11
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> It may depend on the play-off schedule, you may end up in a series that goes play-off day-play-travel day-play-play-travel day-play. And you end up seeing Halladay/Lee in games 4/5 |
|
Sep-17-11 | | Jim Bartle: Could be. If there are lots of off-days the Phillies could be pitching Halladay and Lee twice. And there are definitely more off-days in the first round with four series going on at once. |
|
Sep-17-11
 | | Phony Benoni: They've standardized the playoff schedules this years, so both series in a league will be going on at the game time. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/ps....
In the 5-game, it's 2-travel-2-travel-1. The leagues start on alternate days, but there will be days when all eight teams play. I don't know how they'll handle the TV schedule. To use both the #1 and #2 starters twice, #1 would have to go on three days rest. Seeding-wise, the Yankees are #1 and three games ahead of the Tigers, who are two games ahead of Texas. If there are ties for a seeding position, the Tigers win over either New York or Texas. There is some advantage to finishing with the #2 seed instead of #3. #2 will get a home series against Boston; #3 will have to play at the Yankees. But that's only an advantage for getting into the next round. You're going to have to beat the Yankees some time. |

 | | WannaBe: Did not realize they 'standardized' the play-off schedule, my mistake. What a couple of blowouts, Texas-UCLA and Presbyterian College-Cal. According to my friend, who works for the Giants and AT&T Park, this is the first time P.C. have played a team west of the Mississippi River. This is also the first time, the team traveled by plane. Also, they are called the 'Blue Hose', how about that!? http://espn.go.com/college-football... Since P.C. is the visiting team, they took the traveling squad, while Cal, being at home, dressed everybody up. P.C. only brought 6 cheerleaders, and a mascot, not even a small traveling marching band. I think for the whole game, P.C. managed 2 first downs, one via personal foul penalty in the first half, and they finally got a first down in the beginning of the 3rd quarter, after Cal ran the kick-off 85 yards back for a TD. |

 | | perfidious: <WannaBe: ...P.C. only brought 6 cheerleaders, and a mascot, not even a small traveling marching band.> I've heard of travelling light, but only six cheerleaders? You can't even have a proper good time with that small a crew. Tell me it's a misprint! |
|
Sep-17-11
 | | WannaBe: I counted them, trust me, six (6) of them, remember, they are Football Championship Division (I-AA) team. Their football budget for the whole season would probably be only enough for Cal's football team one week budget. (Okay, maybe one month...) They came, got a check, played a game as well as they could have, and they went home. |

 | | perfidious: On reading a chapter of Willie Mays' biography, it's mentioned that he twice scored from first on a single to left field, the first at 24 and the second at 30. Unreal. |

48 to 3?? time to trade ur defense, they let up 3 points. |

 | | WannaBe: On paper, it seems Boston/Tampa Bay have a pretty even road to the Wild Card. Tampa Bay, (10 games left)
@ Yankees (4 games, Wed. D/N double-header.)
vs. Toronto (3 games)
vs. Yankees (3 games)
Boston (10)
vs. Baltimore (4 games, Mon. D/N double-header.)
@ Yankees (3)
@ Baltimore (3)
I am <NOT> sure, if you want to play a last place team 7 times and that team is relaxed, (Baltimore took 2 of 3 from Angels this weekend.) possibly playing some AAA players for next year, or play a first place team 7 times. Anyone wish to contribute to the discussion? Or maybe we can just save the civility and go straight into name-calling and flaming each other like the other pages here. :-))) |
|
Sep-18-11
 | | perfidious: <WannaBe> You expect civility when talking to a Red Sox fan? What kind of guy ARE you, anyway? On the face of things, Red Sox have an easier time with all those games vs Orioles, but their starting pitching is a mess right now, with one injury after another. Trotting out Wakefield and spot starters in the four/five holes aren't good enough. Tampa has pounded on Boston H2H, but we'll see what happens when they play NY: maybe Pinstriped Scum will lie down for them when they meet in Tampa if they have the division wrapped up by then, as they should, but that's a whole 'nother branch of speculation. |
|
Sep-18-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> It's a little more even for Boston who still has a two-game advantage. And it's hard to believe they won't beat Baltimore more time than Tampa will beat the Yankees. However, Tampa seemed to get energized after losing three of four at home to The Mighty Tigers, so who knows? |
