Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

perfidious: <Phony Benoni> No idea, but I never knew Jim Spencer was a second-generation player.

Bart Johnson went the distance, but that line was lame. No chance he'd have pitched more than six today.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> What's interesting is the RBI line for the White Sox.

They had to let Bart Johnson finish the game; he led the team in saves that year with 14. He began the season as a starter, spent most of his year in the bullpen, then had a few more starts at the end of the year.

But that's some line. 6 walks 12 strikeouts, 3 wild pitches. He faced 41 batters, so probably threw upwards of 150 pitches.

And he started again four days later.

Roberto Alomar was the starting SS for the Angels?! Retrosheet have more longevity error than CG.com does! =)

Sep-18-11  Jim Bartle: Back from a hike, thought this was a misprint: Detroit 48, Kansas City 3.
Sep-18-11  Jim Bartle: In that game the White Sox at least tied the record for fewest run scored when every starter had at least one RBI.

perfidious: Jim Spencer isn't the only example of a second-generation player to skip a generation, as I know of one other such instance.

Are there others, O Kings Of Baseball Knowledge?

WannaBe: I bet Herm Edwards' face on the side-line looked just like <I play the Fred>'s avatar. Red, screaming, yelling, slamming his clipboard onto the ground. =)

Any prediction on tonight's game? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

WannaBe: Why did I think Herm is the head coach of KC? It's Todd Haley...

Apologies to Herm.

Sep-19-11  hangingenprise: dang phony when is the last time the lions scored 48 points and the opponent only 3? me thinks that travis is getting a little bit on edge since cutler got hammered by the saints.

perfidious: <Fred> From here out, it gets ugly-if anyone thought it already hadn't-Chiefs have probably lost Jamaal Charles for the year with a torn ACL.

<Phony Benoni>, <hanging> Yesterday's winning margin of 45 has only happened once before in franchise history (1957), and we all know what happened that year.

Great, yet another team in competition with my Seahawks to grab an elite QB next April. Chiefs are terrible.

WannaBe: Oops, BoSox just dropped their day game to the O's.

BoSox should win the night-cap double-header, they got Lackey (12-12, 6.19 ERA) going against some kid Matusz (1-7, 9.84, NINE POINT EIGHT FOUR?!?!) Heck, why don't they put me in to pitch.

Sep-19-11  playground player: <Esteemed colleagues>,<Wannabe> What the h*** kind of ERAs are those? Didn't there used to be some kinda rule that the pitcher had to commit seppuku if his ERA got that bad?
Sep-19-11
Premium Chessgames Member
perfidious: <plpl> Lackey has what one might call a proven track record-because of his bloated contract, no way they could trade or release him, and it's a ton of dough to give a long man or to allow someone to rot in the bullpen.

Matusz showed flashes last year, but has been wretched this time round.

With those numbers, I wouldn't give myself the ball, let me tell you.

Phony Benoni: Scroll down a bit to find more details on this classic match-up:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/probab...

Lifetime, Matusz has pitched quite well against Boston, with a 2-0 record and 2.49 ERA. However, this probably falls under the category of "darn lies". He hasn't started since getting bombed by the Yankees on 9/5, and is probably getting a chance tonight only because of the doubleheader and the fact that Baltimore has another starting pitcher injured.

perfidious: At $15.95 M for Lackey in 26 starts thus far, who's your pick for worst free-agent signing in recent years, Lackey or AJ Burnett?

They're both impressively pathetic, what with Burnett lugging home $16.5 M:

Phony Benoni: It might be hard to beat Dontrelle Willis for the Tigers. He was signed for $29 million over three years following 2007. Here's what the Tigers got in return over the next 2.5 seasons:

W: 2
L: 8
ERA: 6.50
IP: 101
Hits: 103
Walks: 92 (!)
Strikeouts: 68
WHIP (Walks + Hits/IP: 1.69

He was worse than these figures indicate. A hot streak in 2010 got his ERA below 5.00 and the Tigers, realizing his trade value would never be higher, dumped him off to Arizona for the obscure Billy Buckner who never made the Tigers roster and couldn't even play first base.
