 | | WannaBe: I wouldn't want anyone named Bill(y) Buckner playing first base. =) |
Sep-19-11 | | Jim Bartle: Willis is 0-6 this year. Wonder what happened to the guy who once went 22-10. |
Sep-19-11 | | Jim Bartle: I've complained before about this guy Joe Posnanski at cnnsi.com always making the start of his stories about himself. Here's the first paragraph of his story on Rivera breaking the saves record: "I’m going to start this with a simple fact that might make it sound like I’m picking on the great record of Mariano Rivera. I promise you: I am not. I think my admiration and respect for the Great Rivera is fairly well-established. Heck, I wrote this thing." (Last sentence is a link to a previous article.) http://joeposnanski.si.com/2011/09/... |

 | | Phony Benoni: Baltimore scores three off Lackey in the top of the first. Boston comes right back with four against Matusz, whose ERA is now 10.43. Somehow, I don't think the scoring is over quite yet. |
Sep-19-11 | | Jim Bartle: This game looks like it's going to take ten to win. I had the same feeling in game four of the 1993 series, the 15-14 Mitch Williams game. That one was also 4-3 after the first. |
Sep-19-11 | | Jim Bartle: First Guerrero fouled off a pitch, after it had bounced, then he struck out on a wild pitch and was safe at first. Not exactly another Williams or Bonds in strike-zone judgment. I'll bet this is something that isn't covered in the rules: how late can a batter swing and still have it be called a strike? What I mean is, with two strikes, a ball gets by the catcher. Can the batter just swing then and run down to first? |

 | | WannaBe: Real slug-fest, Matusz got pulled already, first team to 12 runs wins. |
Sep-19-11
 | | perfidious: Three runs in for Beantown in the third so far, 9-5 good guys-but it ain't over! Guerrero's success as a hitter was despite his strike zone judgment; he swung at anything that moved and did well with that approach. |
Sep-19-11 | | Jim Bartle: 11-8 in the sixth. |
Sep-19-11
 | | WannaBe: 11-9, two run game! |
Sep-19-11
 | | perfidious: They could win, with a touchdown so far in the seventh. It's 18-9; they've got a shot. |
Sep-19-11
 | | Phony Benoni: What happened? Did they put Matusz back in the game? <JB> Can't find anything in the rules about that situation. Certainly batters swing after the ball is past them, but they also take practice swings between pitches that aren't called strikes. Certainly the batter can do what Guerrero did. And one with really quick reflexes might judge that the catcher couldn't catch an incoming pitch and deliberately swing. But if the batter waits until the ball actually gets past the catcher, I think the umpire would disallow it. Catchers don't run after wild pitches in that situation, so a late swing would give the batter too much of an advantage. I don't see a rule forbidding the practice, but I think the umpire would utilize judgment in such a case. |

 | | WannaBe: Toronto beat the Angels in 10 innings, while Ariz. won 1-0. That faint beep-beep-beep is going to go flatline any day now. Looks like I won't be able to make it to the Wed. night A's game, work, and other things on my plate. Oh, well, always next year. |
Sep-20-11
 | | perfidious: <WannaBe> Now you mention it, there have been a lot of 1-0 games this year. |
Sep-20-11
 | | WannaBe: Especially in soccer, or football as our cousins across the pond like to call it. =)) |
Sep-20-11
 | | WannaBe: Speaking of football, how come soccer players never got yellow carded for excessive celebration?! |
Sep-20-11 | | Jim Bartle: PB: I agree an umpire would not call a strike if a batter swings when the ball is already rolling toward the backstop. It just sounds like something a manager like Billy Martin or Earl Weaver might have instructed players to do in that situation, then argue that there's no rule against it. |
Sep-20-11 | | Jim Bartle: Actually soccer players can get yellow cards for excessive celebration. For example, it's now a yellow card if you take your shirt off to celebrate, though players sometimes still do it. For example, Andrés Iniesta did it (to reveal a T-shirt remembering a friend from another team, who had died) when he scored the winning goal in last year's World Cup. He said he knew he'd get a card, but didn't care. What I don't understand about goal celebrations is that the scorer often runs away from his teammates, who are just trying to celebrate with him. They'll run toward the crowd, and avoid teammates for as long as possible. |
Sep-20-11 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Has the 1930 Phillies pitching staff made a comeback? Time was, a manager who started a guy with a 6.00+ ERA in a big game would've been investigated. |
Sep-20-11
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle: ... They'll run toward the crowd, and avoid teammates for as long as possible.> See: Lambau Leap, and Kendry Morales (home run/plate injury) for the Angels. |
Sep-20-11
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> Apparently Baltimore was short of starters going into the doubleheader. Matusz hadn't pitched since Sept. 8, and I'd be surprised if he appeared again this season. As mentioned, he had success against Boston before this year. Moneyball doesn't always work. |
Sep-20-11 | | Bengambit: Does anyone remember Mickey Lolich or Earl Wilson??? |
Sep-20-11
 | | WannaBe: Mickey Lolich rings a bell, albeit, faint bell.
I see the early line have Detroit Lions (-3) @ Minnesota Vikings. When was the last time the Lions was a favourite <on the road>? When was the last time the Lions was a favourite on the road <in Minnesota>?? |
Sep-20-11 | | Jim Bartle: "Has the 1930 Phillies pitching staff made a comeback?" A more recent comparison might be the 1987 Indians: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... |
Sep-20-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Two Hall-of-Famers with ERAs over 5.00. Of course, Carlton and Niekro were mainly concerned with embarrassing themselves at the time. |
