Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: <perfidious> The simultion also have the Jets beating Oakland, in Oakland. =(

The simulation was correct, in last week's Oakland-Buffalo game.

perfidious: Hate to admit it, but Jets could well win in Oakland.

Phony Benoni: Here in Detroit, we're still adjusting to the thought of the Lions being favored in a road game, particularly in Minnesota where they haven't won since 1997.

It's just too good to be true, but this may be the year a lot of demons get exorcised. Javid Best becomes the new Barry Sanders. Matthew Stafford becomes the new Bobby Layne. Anybody becomes the new Matt Millen.

perfidious: <PB> Don't I know it; even when Lions had Sanders at the peak of his powers, he turned in some truly wretched performances in Minnesota.

Millen? That's Mr Yuk writ large!

Sep-23-11  technical draw: I'm sorry, I have a little memory problem. I can't remember a baseball teams name. Which team won the American East division title this year? It was the "yan.. " something. If you know just post it here. (in caps because I lost my glasses)...

Phony Benoni: <td> Your memory lapse is quite normal, and can be blamed on the normal reluctance to remember that the Tigers won the season series from the Yankees this year, 4 games to 3.

Of course, when they meet in the playoffs, it won't be that close.

WannaBe: <technical draw> Well, they started out as the Baltimore Orioles, then they moved to New York, and the name was the Highlanders, after being sued by the movie and TV producers, they changed the name for the last time:

<HANKIES>!

Sep-23-11  technical draw: Thanks <WannaBe>. The <HANKIES>, I will be passing them out to the fans of the Tigers, Red Sox and Rangers. (Then I'll pass them out to the fans of the unfortunate NL team that makes it to the world series)

WannaBe: Bos-NY Postponed, due to some nut-job throwing hankies around the stadium. =)

TB is losing at home to Tor, which is not helping their cause any.

SF-Arz don't start until later, SF can help their own cause by 'Just Win Baby'.

Oak-LAA is also later, but I think it may be too late for the LAA to catch TEX, but Wild Card may be a slim possibility.

Phony Benoni: <td> Just be glad the Twins aren't around this year, because they turn them into <HOMER HANKIES!>.
Sep-23-11  Jim Bartle: "Hate to admit it, but Jets could well win in Oakland."

No, no, no. It may appear that way, but after the network cuts away to show a children's movie, the Raiders will score two TDs in the last minute to win.

WannaBe: In week 1, the Madden simulation had a record of 8-8, in week 2, the simulation had a record of 14-2 (!!)

Giving it a two week total of 22-10, 68.75%; which is a lot better than your local TV weatherman's six-day outlook forecast. =)

Sep-23-11  Jim Bartle: So now Boston and New York will play a doubleheader on the final Sunday of the year. Too bad the results only matter to one of the teams.

Phony Benoni: I wonder why the regular season doesn't end on Sunday this year. Is no tradition sacred?
Sep-23-11  Jim Bartle: "Is no tradition sacred?"

Silly question.

Sep-23-11  Jim Bartle: Anybody just catch that ridiculous play by the Nationals?

Man on second, grounder back to the pitcher, catch the runner on second off base, he escapes and gets back to second. Try to throw across to first to catch the batter off first, runner heads for third, then scores when he sees nobody is covering home.

WannaBe: Hehehe... I am guessing the catcher is running down first base line to backup first.

The pitcher did not go home to cover, or is that the centerfielder's job?

Sep-23-11

Phony Benoni: I think that's the bat boy's responsibility, though I'll have to wait for the highlights to be sure.

I'm assuming it was the Nationals in the field, not the Braves who are actually playing for something and might have been paying attention.

Sep-23-11  Jim Bartle: I think the catcher went to cover third during the rundown. I had the play wrong, but really I don't remember Jones being thrown out (play-by-play account):

C.Jones was out advancing, pitcher H.Rodriguez to shortstop Desmond to third baseman Zimmerman to first baseman Marrero to second baseman Espinosa, Bourn scored, C.Jones out.

Big win for Atlanta.

WannaBe: First (C. Jones) and third (Bourn), one out, come backer to the P (H. Rodriguez). (Should be a routine DP, on any level, maybe except T-Ball.)

P to SS Desmond, C. Jones forced out, SS to 3B, (safe, bad play, should have gone to first for the DP.) Seeing the throw to 3B, batter takes off for 2B, 3B throws to 1B (Why not back to second?) 1B throws to 2B, too late safe.

1-6-5-3-4 to get one out. See it every day. It does not go into the score book as E6 and E5, but as mental errors, drives a manager nuts every time.

  Phony Benoni: Here we go:

http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/video...

I think the pitcher should have covered home. There were enough defenders in the play without him, and he's the one that you don't want to be part of the action. As the play progressed, he was crouching on the ground to stay out of the way instead of realizing that with the catcher at third, he had something important to do.

Nevertheless, Bourn gets the Johnny Damon award for heads-up base-running.
