 | | Phony Benoni: Doug Fister goes 8 innings, 0 runs, 3 hits, 0 walks, 9 Ks. Verlander may not be the best pitcher on the Tigers at the moment. He may not come out for the 9th inning, if they ever get there. So far the Tigers have scored six in the bottom of the eighth to stretch the lead to 12-0. Fister may spend the ninth composing a "Thank You" letter to the Seattle GM. Oops--make that eight runs in the bottom of the 8th for a 14-0 lead, The Seattle GM has a permanent place on Doug Fister's Christmas card list. |

 | | WannaBe: <Shams> of course! If both BoSox and Angels keep blowing games! =) Currently, BoSox are the Wild Card Leader, TB is 1 back, and LAA is 3 back. (3 games remain in the regular season.) And right now, BoSox is losing, TB is winning, LAA plays in about 30 minutes, hosting Texas. |
Sep-26-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Meanwhile, in the NL Atlanta is losing to Philadelphia and St. Louis to Houston. The moonwalk to the playoffs continues. |
Sep-26-11
 | | WannaBe: Detroit Lions beat the Cleveland Browns 14-0 in a ho-hum Monday Night Football game. However, B. Sanders did rush for 2189 yards on 155 carries. |
Sep-26-11
 | | WannaBe: Matt Kemp just homered, taking the HR lead by one over A. Pujols, he is also ahead in the RBI category, but needs .010 for the NL batting crown. Could LA Dodgers have 2 triple crown winners in the same year? A trying year with the McCourt fiasco?! |
Sep-26-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Tampa Bay wins, Boston loses. Race is even with two games to go. In the NL, Atlanta has lost. St. Louis just tied their game with the Astros in the 8th. If they pull it out, that race is also tied. |
| Sep-27-11 | | Jim Bartle: I've never been a Dodgers fan, but I've always liked Matt Kemp. Just looks like a real ballplayer, is great to watch. I hope he does it. |
Sep-27-11
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle: I've never been a Dodgers fan...> Well, here a big O' raspberry for ya! Pppppppppppttttthhhhh!!!! Thinking about going to this weekend's UCLA-Stanford game, the last time I was there, we got our a$$ kicked so bad, (this was back in 1990, my freshman year...) Boy, I was young, handsome, winsome, good-looking, bright future, and smart! (Okay, I had a bright future... but that's not the point.) Maybe, I will go and watch them jumpin' tree slaughter the Bruins... =( |
| Sep-27-11 | | Jim Bartle: In truth the Dodgers haven't really been the Dodgers since the O'Malleys sold the team. Back then that was a great rival to have: always a little better than the Giants, long-term teams built primarily from the farm system, great fun. Now they seem like just another team, though I think it's more a homegrown team than a few years ago. |

<That brings to mind one of Bill Walsh's sayings: "The key to winning in the NFL is a pass rush in the fourth quarter." That's why he always played two full sets of linemen, so they'd still be strong at the end.> And sure enough:
<The biggest difference between the way the Vikings play during the first half of games and the second half has been the relative disappearance of their pass rush. During the first half of their three games so far this year, the Vikings have sacked opposing quarterbacks on 10.3 percent of their dropbacks. No team had a sack rate higher than 9 percent last season, so that would make the first-half Vikings pass rush just about the best unit in football.During the second half, though, things change. The Vikings have sacked the opposing signal-caller on just three of their 75 dropbacks, which produces a miserly sack rate of 4 percent. The worst pass rush in football last year sacked quarterbacks 4.3 percent of the time, so that's right — the Vikings have swung from an elite pass rush to a terrible one during the two halves of their games this year. If they can maintain their pass rush through a full game, well, they'll start winning.> http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id... Smart fellow, that Bill Walsh. |

 | | WannaBe: Looking ahead to tonight's 4 important games...
Boston: Bedard (5-9, 3.50 ERA) @ Baltimore: Britton (11-10, 4.44 ERA) New York: Colon (8-10, 4.02) @ Tampa Bay: Hellickson (13-10, 2.90) Philadelphia: Oswalt (8-10, 3.86) @ Atlanta: Lowe (9-16, 4.92) St. Louis: Westbrook (12-9, 4.48) @ Houston: Sosa (3-5, 4.68) Derek Lowe is 9 and 16 ERA that is almost 5 (?!?!) what on earth happened to him?? Roy Oswalt have a losing record? And an ERA that is closer to 4 than to 3? What happened to him!? |
| Sep-27-11 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Three words that should not go together: "first", "place", "Lions". A sure sign of the apocalypse. As for Doug Pfister, he is pfaking the pfunk; Mister Fister, or his ancestors, probably shortened his last name. |
| Sep-27-11 | | Jim Bartle: Four games, and not a single front-line starter, with the possible exception of Hellickson. Probably going to be a lot of runs scored. I assume the Yankees will be keeping some of their usual starters on the bench. It'll be interesting to see how many. |
Sep-27-11
 | | WannaBe: Injuries continue to mound for the BoSox, (no pun intended, or is it mount?) http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story... |
Sep-27-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Sounds more like injuries are on their plate. But don't worry. If worst comes to worst, they'll just use David Ortiz at catcher. At least nothing will get past him. No room. |
| Sep-27-11 | | I play the Fred: At this point in his career, can Ortiz get into, ot out of, a crouch? |
Sep-27-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Boston up 5-3 in the 4th, but they've already gone to the bullpen. Rays up 2-1 in the 5th on the Yankees, who seem to be using their regular lineup except for Jeter. In the NL, Philly 6-0 over Atlanta, St. Louis trailing Houston 1-0 in the third. Will the moonwalk continue? |
Sep-27-11
 | | WannaBe: Westbrook for St. Louis just got pulled, after giving up 5 ER in 2 1/3 innings. Wade Boggs is now pitching for StL. Yanks ahead 3-2 middle of the 6th. |
Sep-27-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Tampa wins 5-3. Boston's 8-4 lead has shrunk to 8-6, going into the night. Bosox reserve catcher Ryan Lavarnway, pressed into service tonight due to injuries (see <WannaBe>'s link above), has hit two home runs. Are we seeing the next Wally Pipp? Atlanta goes down quietly to Philly. St. Louis fell behind Houston 5-0, came back to tie the game, but are again behind 6-5. Tony LaRussa blesses his lucky stars for investing in Tums. |
Sep-27-11
 | | WannaBe: Doesn't look like Kemp will catch the batting average title... No triple crown there. |
Sep-27-11
 | | Phony Benoni: Both wild card races tied with one game to go. This is the kind of pulsating excitement MLB envisioned when they devised this playoff system. Y'all can stop yawning any moment now. Anyone for a Thursday doubleheader? |
Sep-28-11
 | | WannaBe: TB turned a triple (3rd in franchise history) in their game tonight, so, of course, I had to go and look it up, see which team had the most/least. http://tripleplays.sabr.org/
Have fun! =) |
Sep-28-11
 | | WannaBe: So... We look ahead to Wednesday's games:
Boston: Lester (15-9, 3.49 ERA) @ Baltimore: Simon (4-9, 4.85 ERA) Yankees: TBA @ Tampa Bay: Price (12-13, 3.35)
Philly: Blanton (1-2, 5.03) @ ATL: Hudson (16-10, 3.23) St. Louis: Carpenter (10-9, 3.59) @ Houston: Myers (7-13, 4.31) Got to favor Boston with Lester, not sure who the heck Yankees is going to put out there, favor Hudson for Atl. and take Carpenter for StL. |
| Sep-28-11 | | Jim Bartle: Looks likely all four wild-card contenders will win today. Playoffs (excuse me, play-in games) in both leagues. Didn't figure out that Youkilis is out for the year for Boston until last night. That's a big blow, even if he wasn't having a great year. |
Sep-28-11
 | | Phony Benoni: The triple play:
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?c... I notice that <WannaBe> did not mention the Dodgers game. This has to be the walk-off win to end all walk-off wins, happening with two out in the bottom of the <10th>: http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?c... |
