Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Boston lost (again!?!) and TB won, so the chase for the wild card is now .5, with Angels winning, in the 4th.

By the end of the night, if BoSox lose again, they'll be tied with TB for wild card. And if the Angels should win, they could be 1 game back!! Yikes!!

Anyone remember the tie-break scenario from that article I posted a few days back, if AL have a 3 way tie?!

Phony Benoni: The orange uniforms are probably Travis' idea. But why is he frothing at the mouth?

Yes, it's the Same Old Lions. They used to do this sort of thing all the time back in the 1950s.

<hangingenprise> Oh, that catch was merely impossible. Wait till he makes a really tough one.

Sep-25-11  Jim Bartle: The Sox were beaten by AJ Burnett? That's sinking about as low as you can go.

Phony Benoni: Plus Tampa Bay won, so the margin is now 1/2 game. Sox pitching John Lackey and his 6.49 ERA in the nightcap. Angels also winning; they could draw within one game.

NL wild card tightening as well. Atlanta was shut out, St. Louis leading in the 9th. If that holds, it's a one game lead for Atlanta.

Anyone for Lions and Bills in the Super Bowl?

perfidious: What's the O/U on runs allowed by Lackey tonight?
Sep-25-11  Jim Bartle: The Boston situation is a perfect example of the huge value of having a first-rate starter like Verlander this year. No matter how bad the team is going, it's a pretty sure thing your stopper is going to end any losing streak.

I'll venture 4 1/2 runs before he gets yanked, in the first inning. He was always like that when he was with the Angels.

WannaBe: I think the Super Bowl winner this year, will come out of the NFC West.

Oops, wrong page, thought this was Odd Lie.

WannaBe: Think Kershaw will win the game, Dodgers up 6-1 top of the 8th, through seven full, Kershaw have gave up 1 ER, 82 pitches.

Think Don will leave him in there for a CG, and get the pitching triple crown? Does it still count as triple crown if you are tied in one category?

Kershaw and Kennedy of Ariz. would be tied with 21 wins, but Kershaw have ERA and Ks.

Phony Benoni: I think ties count. Back in 1967, Carl Yastrzemski got his Triple Crown despite being tied in HRs by Harmon Killebrew.

Phony Benoni: Ready for the biggest <The Glass is Half Full Statistic> of all time? Brian Matusz's ERA of 10.69 will set the record for highest ERA by a pitcher throwing at least 40 innings in a season. (One measure of his badness is that he has 11 starts and pitched a total of 44.1 innings. Ouch.)

But here's the good part. The former record of 10.64, set in 2000, was held by <Roy Halladay>. Yes, <that> Roy Halladay. So if statistics mean anything, Matusz will be challenging Verlander for the Cy Young in a few years.

WannaBe: So, in 2022 (or 2021, maybe 2020) Matusz will be pitching for Detroit and will have a record of 29-3 with an ERA of 1.87, 600 Ks and Cy Young in his back pocket. =)

Phony Benoni: Red Sox keep a 1-game lead over Tampa by winning that 14-inning marathon in the nightcap, but what do they have left? Angels blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning to go three games down, so they're done. Similar situation in the NL with Atlanta leading St. Louis by only one game, but both teams seem to be staggering.

The races for #2 and #3 seeds are both one-game affairs as well, with Texas leading Detroit and Milwaukee ahead of Arizona. In both cases, the trailing team holds the tiebreak edge (no play-off game in that case), so it's still interesting.

In the AL, #2 plays at home against the wild card, #3 goes to the Yankees. The NL is more interesting. If Atlanta holds on, they go to the #2 seed and #3 plays at Philadelphia. If St. Louis catches the Braves, they play at the Phillies and #2 hosts #3.

Ready for the NFL playoff picture yet?

keypusher: Wrong sport, I know, but I just had to mention that the Vikings have now blown double-digit halftime leads in three consecutive games (most recently to the mighty Lions, so there is a <Phony Benoni> link). No one has ever started a season like this in the entire history of the NFL, obviously. And they've already tied the full-season record with 13 games to go!

Sep-26-11  Shams: If we could give Tarvaris Jackson back to Minnesota they wouldn't have this problem of blowing huge leads.

Yes, you must have a lead, in order to blow it. =)

Sep-26-11  Jim Bartle: Vikings so far this year:

1st half: 54-7.
2nd half: 67-6.

That brings to mind one of Bill Walsh's sayings: "The key to winning in the NFL is a pass rush in the fourth quarter." That's why he always played two full sets of linemen, so they'd still be strong at the end.

Phony Benoni: Which is exactly what the Lions are doing with their defensive line this year.

<keypusher> As long as the Lions keep winning, football is fair game here.

Sep-26-11  Shams: I love Detroit but they're not there yet, terrible pass protection and pretty bad pass defense (when they can't get to the QB). Not a recipe for success in the NFC North. And losing LeShoure hurts their red zone game a lot. Still, the future could not be more bright. Stafford is my favorite player in the league, and how much fun will it be when Fairley is in there at DT? Should be carnage!

WannaBe: Beckett is getting hammered by the O's, TB is winning, which is not good news for Boston.

Angels have no margin for error, if they lose/Boston win, they are eliminated...

No pressure, right?

Sep-26-11  Shams: <WannaBe> I haven't been following too closely. Are there any scenarios in which both the Angels and the Red Sox are eliminated? That would be my rooting interest.
