Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> I've posted a question for you at L T Magee vs J Holland, 1948

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Ritson-Morry vs G T Crown, 1947

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Sep-24-11  Jim Bartle: No, I don't think the number of games will be reduced. It's just a pipe dream.

Wannabe: Yes, only three teams missed the playoffs. In 62-63, the Warriors' first year in SF, they managed to miss the playoffs with a 31-49 record, despite having a pretty good player at center, edged out for the last spot by Detroit. The other teams not to make the playoffs were the Knicks and the expansion Chicago Zephyrs (now the Wizards, I believe).

West: LA, St. Louis, Detroit, SF, Chicago.
East: Boston, Syracuse, Cincinnati, NY.

Sep-24-11  Jim Bartle: Knicks must have to return a lot of cash to season-ticket holders for unplayed playoff games.

Phony Benoni: Justin Verlander going for #25 tonight, but it doesn't look good: Tigers are down 4-0 in the second inning.

WannaBe: Still early, TB have tied up their game. BoSox lost already, and so did Atl.

Phony Benoni: TB now up 3-2. San Francisco gets stung for six in the first inning; looks like it ends for them tonight.

Tigers within 5-4 now, and Verlander still pitching in the 7th. Might still be a chance for #25.

WannaBe: Looks like Kennedy for Ariz. will get his 21st win tonight, the snakes put up a 6 spot in the bottom of the first.

Giants starting pitcher only lasted 2/3 of an inning before hitting the shower.

Kershaw for the Dodgers will go for his 21st tomorrow, against the Padres in San Diego.

Phony Benoni: No decision for Verlander tonight. He came out after 7, and the Tigers just tied the game in the bottom of the 8th.

perfidious: <PB> I just offered the Anaheim Cy voters a little baksheesh to vote for Verlander.........
Sep-25-11
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: <perfidious> I don't think Verlander needs to worry about the Cy Young. It's the MVP which is the big question, and he needed to keep his dominance intact to have a shot.

That's one problem trying to be the MVP when playing only every fifth day--fewer chances to wipe out a bad impression.

perfidious: <PB> My concern was the unanimous vote for Cy which is rightly his. Gotta take care of dem things, ya know.

Phony Benoni: <perfidious> Thanks for your concern, but I fear there were going to be some Favorite Sons in any event. I saw one guy bring up some totally obscure statistic proving C.C. Sabbathia had a better year, and anyway Sabbathia pitches in a tougher division so he is more worthy of the award.

To my mind, that makes about as much sense as disqualifying Sabbathia because he doesn't have to pitch against the Yankees.

perfidious: <PB> If I were voting, Sabathia would be my third choice, after Weaver.

WannaBe: Well, SF have officially eliminated by Arz last night, with that blow out win. Worst case in the NL, one game Wild Card playoff, no 3 teams scenario.

Angels are on life support, close to flat-lining. BoSox plays 2 today against Yanks. Plus full slate of NFL games. Boy, this is more exciting than watching a 15 move GM draw!

Watching Bass fishin'!

Look on the bright side, you could be watching Jax-Car 5-3, exciting baseball game.

Phony Benoni: 20-0 Minnesota at the half. Perhaps the Lions aren't as good as people thought, nor the Vikings as bad.

WannaBe: Oh, goodie, Matusz's ERA have reached 10.69! Too bad he is not a QB or RB, those would be great numbers for averages.
Sep-25-11  Jim Bartle: Lions look to be making a nice comeback. Too bad my kids have monopolized the TV.

WannaBe: What a couple of games, NE-Buf, and Det-Min! Did I mention that Lions was favored by 3 points?

The simulation had Detroit winning, but by a bigger margin, and no OT.

Sep-25-11  hangingenprise: <phony> what a catch by johnson!!
Sep-25-11  Jim Bartle: Da Bears are wearing ORANGE uniforms. Is nothing sacred?
Sep-25-11  hangingenprise: well phony your lions are for real. a overtime win on the road against a good team.

perfidious: That whooshing sound in Metro Detroit was all the Lions backers sighing with relief after they were saved by the push.

Money not lost spends as well as money won.

'Course, anyone who went with the opening line (-4) bought it anyway.
