Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: (Useless) NFL Draft Information from ESPN:

<Three Shaqs drafted so far in this year's NFL Draft. All born within Shaquille O'Neal's first two years in the NBA.>

B. Hundley (QB, Junior) left Ucla with one year of eligibility remaining, and was drafted in the 5th round by Green Bay.

Shoulda stayed in school one more year?

Phony Benoni: No, he did the right thing by coming out early and going to Green Bay. Had he stayed, he might have gotten drafted by a bad team next year.

  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Neither can I!

Fame is not as famous as it used to be, and it doesn't last as long. I remember when everybody knew Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and the top contenders (in fact, I go back to Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johansson).

I didn't watch golf, but I knew Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Ben Hogan. Never watched a horse-race; but Sea Biscuit, Man O' War, and Secretariat were household names.

Somehow our popular culture has learned how to shrink fame. I think I enjoyed it more when it was bigger.

May-03-15  Jim Bartle: That's an interesting point, and not so easy to pinpoint. I think today we just see the star athletes too often and too closely. The mystery and imagination required to appreciate the great athletes has disappeared. The idea is sort of covered in 'Wbere have you gone, Joe DiMaggio, a nation turns it lonely eyes to you.'

That's for most sports. Boxing is different. Since it's disappeared from broadcast TV, there's no way to get fans interested in young boxers as they move up. Boxing appeals to a small but fanatical part of the public. Sort of like chess but with more money.

Klechko, or whatever his last name is spelled, heavy weight, chess/boxing playing Russian. I don't know if Winky Wright is still fighting, south-paw boxer. My fav.

Strange ending to that Dodgers game, but the funny thing is, when it happened to Angels, Kentucky Derby was on.

Everyone at the watering hole was watching the race, and when the race was over, so was the Angels-Giants game.

I don't think a single person at the bar knew 'how' the game ended, all we saw was the final score.

Even though they had TVs on both event. Funny.

WannaBe: According to J. Stark of ESPN, last time a game ended with a runner-hit-by-ball was 2010 (He did not say which two teams), and of course, two games ended that way on Saturday.

Gotta love baseball.

  Phony Benoni: Conspiracy Theory!

It just hit me that Bugs Bunny is a Warner Brothers cartoon. Now, where else do we see the abbreviation <WB> around here?

This cannot be a coincidence. I demand a full investigation by the Commissioners of the WHA, WFL, PCA, and the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce.

WannaBe: Apparently Tigers ran themselves into a rather unusual 6-4-3 DP, why is it unusual?

The runner was on second, not on first. The Second Baseman had to tag the returning runner, then throw to first.

Penguincw: Man, when was the last time a manager was fired this early in the season?

Anyway, happy 146th anniversary of some famous baseball game: http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2015/05/04....

The start of a 57 game winning streak. And I thought the Astros winning 10 straight was amazing...

WannaBe: <Penguincw> That's a good question, I know many coach/manager that didn't last one game before getting the boot.

Wally Backman for D'Backs come to mind, or Mike Price for Alabama.
