I live in South Florida USA. Rated USCF ~1800

A long time ago I was a new player in a Miami chess park, and one of the stronger players thought I had real talent, so he suggested that I play the park champ, a Cuban master. After the master destroyed me in a few blitz games, the question was posed, "Is he any good?" The answer I took as a great compliment: "Ehh... he tries to be sneaky."

The greatest chess player of all time is Robert James Fischer. The greatest chess problemist of all time is Sam Loyd. The greatest chess site of all time is chessgames.com!

Other players who I admire:

<Morphy> Possibly the greatest natural chess talent ever. Like Steinitz who followed, he taught the world how the game should really be played. <Najdorf> He was smart enough to make his money outside of chess, so he played for the pure joy of it. <Tal> Proved that even in the modern era, chess is an art more than a science. <Blackburne> Sacrificed his queen more times than I've had hot meals. <Diemer> One of the most original thinkers the game ever has known. His ideas were not always right, but they were HIS ideas. <Topalov> He hates draws so much he'll gladly risk losing to avoid one. I can forgive him for the Elista debacle; his chess is payment enough. <Lembit Oll> When on the attack, Lembit Oll said "Dambit All!" <Kasparov> Strive for perfection, one move at a time. <Alekhine> Swashbuckling play culminating in booming sacrifices.

And countless others: Nezhmetdinov, Shirov, Nunn, Shabalov, Nakamura, basically, anybody with cojones.

Addendum 2015: <Magnus Carlsen> has to be on the list. He's a modern day Casablanca. The way he squeezes wins out of the tiniest advantages and grinds his opponents down through sheer stamina is right up there with Robert James.

You can find me on FICS (freechess.org) ... and lately, on ICC as well. I'll gladly play anybody within 1000 points of my rating. I also really like the site http://www.lichess.org but so far have only played anonymously.

TheAlchemist: <Sneaky> Sorry for this, but just a small correction, the link you posted isn't exactly the whole thing, it's "only" the parts 1-5 (of 9): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_...

I have unfotunately never seen the whole thing in one piece yet (the whole 26 minutes). Does anyone know if it exists?

Sneaky: Right you are, sorry about that. I was listening to the thing for about 10 minutes and figured it just must be the entire thing. On the album, the 2nd group of music is sort of like a reprise.

Michael Jackson's "Thriller"

Nov-01-06  princeofdragons: <Michael Jackson's "Thriller"> Very fitting for this occasion. Although many people think Jackson is a wacko but he is a true performer and his music videoes is actually are SHORT-MOVIES. Simply stunning.
Nov-01-06  Open Defence: there is no denying Michael Jackson is a great artist and he is not the first great artist to do really dumb wierd (and possibly illegal, disgusting things.. but this is not proven) things... but I love his more R&B tinged stuff... but hey.. Eddie rocked on Beat it.. and it has a great groove..

WannaBe: <Sneaky> You're absolutely right, BxN in your game last night wasn't well liked by my software.

I thought, in this situation, where you're up by 2 pawns, you want to trade all available pieces....

Guess that's why I suck at chess. :-(

Sneaky: WannaBe, in positions where you are a won no matter what, it's a matter of taste. Ask yourself "what am I most afraid of?" Are you afraid of accidentally hanging a whole piece, getting forked, etc.--or are you afraid of your opponent finding an amazing draw in a rook ending? As for me, I'm afraid of the rook ending.

I really like Johnny Cash, especially his gospel stuff.

"The Man Comes Around"

Nov-05-06  suenteus po 147: <Sneaky> That's a great, great song. It was also used to chilling effect during the opening credit sequence of the remade "Dawn of the Dead."
Nov-08-06  shr0pshire: <Sneaky>

1. Have you heard the unreleased Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan duo album from '69?

http://djmonstermo.blogspot.com/200...

I have a copy of the album and it isn't great by musical standards. However, it is priceless if you are a Cash or Dylan fan, or just a fan of music history.

2. Do you have any good lines against the Colle? I know you mentioned some tips I could use against it, but I was wondering if you could show me some some games or suggest some lines for me to look at. Thanks.

Nov-08-06  Resignation Trap: Here's a game for your underpromotion collection: A Sandrin vs P LeCornu, 1947 .

Sneaky: <shr0pshire> No I didn't know about that, only knew about "Nashville Skylne."

About the Colle, I'm not really prepared against it, it's just such a bland opening I feel like I can use common sense. Of course with that sorry attitude that probably means the next Colle player I meet will run over me like an 18-wheeler. If you like we can look at some lines together. From a psychological point of view, anything to really stir up the position and tear-open the center might be what the Colle player is NOT looking for.

<Resignation Trap> Thanks! My collection is really getting to be impressive. I don't accept merely any underpromotion (there must be hundreds in this database alone!) but that one is a gem.

Sneaky: Just to be clear, what exactly is the "Colle position" anyhow? Is is this:

click for larger view

White suffers from the bad QB, but to his credit he has a variety of plans so he can remain very flexible. For example, one could imagine c3 and e4 in this positon, or c4 right away.

In principle, White's biggest problem is the lack of dark square control on the kingside. Therefore if I could put my pieces anywhere I wanted to, I think I'd enjoy something like this

click for larger view

Mind you I made many more moves for Black than White, this is just a hypothetical "fantasy position". By the time I could have this setup White would be able to castle, develop his QB, etc.

My thinking is: since his queenside is in a tangle, O-O-O might be the safest place to be. My queen and dark squared bishop serve as a painful reminder of his lack of dark square control on the kingside. The break ...e5 is coming.

I'm not sure if this is so hot, but it's a starting point. Can we improve on it?

Nov-09-06  shr0pshire: <Sneaky> There is just one player who I know plays blitz (he is a good player, not great, but good) he only plays a colle system pretty much independent of what black does as a defense.

As you know I like to play the modern benoni or even the benko as black against Queen pawn openings, also I dabble in the dutch as well. I am just not sure what the best method is to go about attacking it because I so rarely see it, and I would appreciate it.

That is an interesting fantasy position. Let me look up some games on here and in my database and let me see some games where I like the position and I will get back to you on it. ;)

Thanks.

Nov-11-06  shr0pshire: <Sneaky> I looked over our benoni game yesterday with Yace after we finished. In a quick analysis it said you had a .80 advantage in the end before you lost your queen, which were my thoughts as well.

Just wanted to let you know that you had a slight advantage in the endgame.

Sneaky: That's what I figured, but it's not like I hung my queen in an easy position, you kept the pressure up and one of us was bound to blunder in the time pressure.

Sneaky: I'm so sorry, I spoke out of turn. I just asked an admin on FICS and the story is that they have a hardware problem and registrations are currently on hold. :-(

Almost makes me want to send those guys $50 or something to help them get back on their feet. They do so much and never ask for a penny.

Nov-16-06  virginmind: ok. you don't play on playchess server?
Nov-16-06  calmarten: You can still sign in as a guest of fics. I don't know if you need to download a gui though. There was a news article on it a while ago. Just type "news" and its one of the last ones.

P.S. Whats your name on fics <sneaky>
