I live in South Florida USA. Rated USCF ~1800

A long time ago I was a new player in a Miami chess park, and one of the stronger players thought I had real talent, so he suggested that I play the park champ, a Cuban master. After the master destroyed me in a few blitz games, the question was posed, "Is he any good?" The answer I took as a great compliment: "Ehh... he tries to be sneaky."

The greatest chess player of all time is Robert James Fischer. The greatest chess problemist of all time is Sam Loyd. The greatest chess site of all time is chessgames.com!

Other players who I admire:

<Morphy> Possibly the greatest natural chess talent ever. Like Steinitz who followed, he taught the world how the game should really be played. <Najdorf> He was smart enough to make his money outside of chess, so he played for the pure joy of it. <Tal> Proved that even in the modern era, chess is an art more than a science. <Blackburne> Sacrificed his queen more times than I've had hot meals. <Diemer> One of the most original thinkers the game ever has known. His ideas were not always right, but they were HIS ideas. <Topalov> He hates draws so much he'll gladly risk losing to avoid one. I can forgive him for the Elista debacle; his chess is payment enough. <Lembit Oll> When on the attack, Lembit Oll said "Dambit All!" <Kasparov> Strive for perfection, one move at a time. <Alekhine> Swashbuckling play culminating in booming sacrifices.

And countless others: Nezhmetdinov, Shirov, Nunn, Shabalov, Nakamura, basically, anybody with cojones.

Addendum 2015: <Magnus Carlsen> has to be on the list. He's a modern day Casablanca. The way he squeezes wins out of the tiniest advantages and grinds his opponents down through sheer stamina is right up there with Robert James.

You can find me on FICS (freechess.org) ... and lately, on ICC as well. I'll gladly play anybody within 1000 points of my rating. I also really like the site http://www.lichess.org but so far have only played anonymously.

Sneaky: No playchess for Sneaky ... I have a macintosh, no playchess for mac users. That makes them losers in my opinion. Wake up to the 21st century people, your software doesn't have to marry an operating system like that anymore.

This mp3 is for my chessgames friends who think that Karpov would have stood a chance against Fischer in 1975.

  Sneaky: Macintosh Chess Players --

Download Fixation. This software is must-have. It's the best client for chess servers available, better than Baba's Chess, better than Blitzin, it just rocks.

http://cknelsen.sasktelwebsite.net/...

Once you install it you might be interested in getting alternate piece sets. Here are some for download -- http://world.std.com/~wij/fixation/...

Another small point is that the default colors or not to my liking. I like a very very light ivory color for the white squares, and a very light green for the dark squares. This reminds me of a tournament mat.

Nov-20-06  Stevens: hi <sneaky>, ok i am trying to download fixation as you recommend. once the file is downloaded though i can't do anything with it. it says to choose which application to open it with, of which none are selectable. what am i doing wrong?!

<sneaky><wannabe> would one of you guys be up for a quickish game if/when i'm up and running so i can get used to the interface, or will the website problems at FICS stop me from getting in there?

WannaBe: <Stevens> I don't access FICS with this computer, and due to the time-zone differences, the only time we'll be on at the same time will be weekends.

But if you tell me your handle, I'll be on the look-out for you. (Or/and post it on the FICS profile's page).

Sneaky: Stevens, you need some way to open hqx files on your Mac. I'm not sure what the standard procedure is. Don't you have that "Unstuffit" tool that Mac users all have?

Anyhow if you run into me on FICS sure I'll play anybody, anytime, anywhere.

Nov-21-06  thegoodanarchist: <Sneaky> I looked at your game collection of "10 greatest attacking games of all time" and I noticed, no Tal!

Say it ain't so, Joe!

Sneaky: That's a good point. I could name at least 5 Tal games that probably deserve to be in the list, but the problem is, what game do I currently have that DOESN'T belong?
Nov-21-06  Archives: This one...

E Z Adams vs Carlos Torre, 1920

Replaced with this one...

Tal vs Hecht, 1962

Nov-21-06  thegoodanarchist: <Archives> offers an excellent candidate. That Tal game reminds me of his comment that his opponent can only capture one of his pieces at a time.

Perhaps, due to the stature of the opponent (a former WC), <Sneaky> might consider

Tal vs Smyslov, 1959 ?

Nov-21-06  thegoodanarchist: Sorry, I didn't answer the question!

Replace

De Ronde vs Kamstra, 1938

with

Tal vs Smyslov, 1959

Just a suggestion!

Nov-21-06  thegoodanarchist: Sorry for so many posts, but it just hit me: Start a new game collection of <just> Tal's attacking games. Then you would do even greater honor to the Magician from Riga than merely 1 game on a list of 10.

Sneaky: I refuse to take De Ronde vs Kamstra, 1938 off the list. It might not be as famous as the other "immortals" on the list but it's an awesome game. At one stage in the attack, the material deficit is a queen and a knight!

Sneaky: About E Z Adams vs Carlos Torre, 1920, what I love about it, is that you can take some 10 year old kid who's only been playing chess for a few months, and show them this game, and they can follow every single move. Even a beginner understands the concept of back-rank mate, and that's what this game is all about--probably the most incredible back-rank sequence I've ever seen.

Sneaky: I just made a change to my collection but unbelievably I didn't add a Tal game yet! I felt that Traxler's king hunt, while sublime, had to take second place to Ed Lasker's bolt from the blue in Edward Lasker vs G A Thomas, 1911. Very similar games, but I prefer the way Lasker came up with it out of a seemingly quiet position, as opposed to being sucked into Traxler's incredible opening research.
Nov-24-06  whatthefat: <Sneaky>
Very nice game collection. Interesting that it contains no games by either Tal OR Alekhine! As you say though, it's very hard to argue with any of the games currently in the list. Morphy's would be the only one I'd consider removing, but it is very pretty. Perhaps Spassky's brilliant miniature Larsen vs Spassky, 1970 is a good candidate, but I'm not sure what criteria you were using.

By the way, in Tal's Winning Chess Combinations, the conclusion to Adams vs. Torre is described as 'The Combination of the Century'.

  Sneaky: Thanks.

If you don't see your favorite player, remember, it's not supposed to be the ten best attacking PLAYERS of all time, it's the best GAMES. (Of course, it's not really even that... for every game on the list you could find 10 more that are just as worthy!) My criteria was a combination (1) fame (2) the "wow factor" and (3) accessable to beginning players as well as strong players.

The real purpose of the collection is for newcomers to chess to dive right into the good stuff. I don't expect to show any of my cg.com friends much they haven't seen before.

Nov-25-06  thegoodanarchist: I love the combination in the Lasker-Thomas game - it is one of the all-time greats, for sure. According to the cg.com score, Thomas resigned. But other sources indicated that he got mated with Kd2. In any event, Lasker could have mated with O-O-O (if Thomas played it out), and this would have been much more aesthetically pleasing, IMO.

I thought this one would be appropriate. It's called "Don't Download This Song" by Weird Al Yankovic.

http://sandyandmikey.com/music/WAY-...

Don't click above. It's not right. It's music piracy and violates international laws. Don't do it, go buy the CD instead, you know that's the right thing to do. I'm serious, don't click.

Nov-26-06  shr0pshire: I really wish I could see what your team in the consultation match is saying about our first move right now. lol. :)
