| Jan-30-07 | | Zebra: I am still undecided at the moment, although the Dragon is my normal line, and I am encouraged by the number of other dragon players in the team. <TTLump: Anyway, I would still like to play 5... a6 and if we decide to go with the Dragon, we can most likely play 6... g6 on the next move.> This is possible if we intend to play a Najdorf-Dragon hybrid (a4, Nd7, g6) - a line I don't know much about, though it seems to be enjoying some success (I think Fedorov plays it for example). If we want to play a straight Dragon, however, then a6 is too slow (if we find ourselves facing the Yugoslav, which is not unlikely). I would dive straight in with 5...g6. |
| Jan-30-07 | | Zebra: For a nice example of the aforementioned Dragon-Najdorf hybrid, see S Satyapragyan vs Fedorov, 2006. Personally, IF we are going to play the dragon, I would prefer a straight 5...g6, or at any rate that is the only line on which I know any theory. |
| Jan-30-07 | | Zebra: Sorry, in my next to last post, a4 should of course be a6. The line referred to is 5...a6, 6...Nbd7, 7g6 (with possible permutations, as in the Fedorov game). I hope I've got it right this time... |
| Jan-30-07 | | Marco65: <Zebra> I don't feel confident either in experimenting such unbeaten paths. Just as a gut feeling, in that game I prefer White at move 10, but the manouever Nc6-b4 wasted the advantage in development imo. I am for 5...g6 and don't deviate from theory so early. |

| Jan-30-07 | | farrooj: Hi <TheAlchemist>! Does this count for memorable quotes? Edinburgh Chess Club |
Jan-30-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <farrooj> Of course, thanks! I can't beliee I didn't notice it myself, I posted there right after him. Oh, well... How have you been, by the way? Still on the grill? :-) |
| Jan-30-07 | | farrooj: Fine, a lot of homework though :) I'm trying to get back into professional chess (Tournaments, Studies, Clubs, etc..) but it's hard to manage.
And you? |
Jan-30-07
 | | TheAlchemist: Ok. I'm studying a little (less than I should, however :-)), lurking around here... Not much, really. You know what, I'll add you to our fans' list, whether you like it or not, we need a few more members anyway. :-) |
| Jan-30-07 | | farrooj: Err...Thanks? :) |
Jan-30-07
 | | TheAlchemist: It's ok, you don't really have to do anything, just keep your fingers crossed. |
| Jan-30-07 | | Zebra: <Marco> I agree with you, in fact there is a lot about white's play here that I don't get. I would prefer not to adopt this hybrid for white, and stick to a straight choice (i.e. this move) between dragon or najdorf-scheveningen, and then go for it. For a Scheveningen I suppose Nc6 and e6 are also playable, though I much prefer Kasparov's a6 move order. |
Jan-30-07
 | | TheAlchemist: I don't like 5...e6 here because of 6.g4 |
| Jan-30-07 | | farrooj: Can I comment about any move or am I assigned to sit and watch in awe? (non-sarcastic, fanboy tone) |

| Jan-30-07 | | Zebra: <TheAlchemist: I don't like 5...e6 here because of 6.g4> That is certainly one good reason. I also feel that 5...e6 is not the most flexible move here, unless we have some desire to reach the Modern Scheveningen (which I haven't noticed so far, and have no particular wish for myself). 5...Nc6 is a bit more flexible but still rules out a Najdorf, which again seems to go against the views of many team members. So it looks very much like 5 ...a6 or ...g6. I am personally pretty happy with either taking our chances in a probable Yugoslav Dragon or threading our way through the permutations after ...a6. |
| Jan-30-07 | | hitman84: <TheAlchemist>Is it gonna be a Najdorf or Dragon ? You might want to add this link in your bio http://www.chessclub.com/chessviewe...
Its a PGN viewer.
Btw, Where is <chessmoron> ? |
| Jan-30-07 | | hitman84: <TheAlchemist>How did you get those games ? See if you can find Bg5 Najdorf games. |
| Jan-30-07 | | Zebra: I have been looking back in the kibbitzing to try and get an impression of the balance of opinion at the moment, which looks - well, balanced I suppose. I may well have missed some however. for Najdorf:
<Rocafella> (strongly), <Jess> (less strongly), <chessmoron> (at least anti-Dragon) undecided: <the Alchemist>, <hitman> (good at both, pretends not to know any theory ;)), <Zebra> just plain undecided, <dakgootje> happy with both For Dragon:
<Marco>, <TTLump> (however prefers dragon with a6), <swapmeet> Is that about right at this stage? |
| Jan-30-07 | | Zebra: By the way, are any of you members of ICC? What do you think of it (as compared for example with Gameknot, which is where I usually play)? |
Jan-30-07
 | | TheAlchemist: <hitman84> Here: http://gamesarchive.iccf.com/ I went through the 2006 games briefly and only looked at Black's wins first, most of the Bg5 Najdorf went into the Poisoned pawn variation (Qb6), but with White playing Nb3 instead of Qd2. I'll try and look for some games, but it's a lot of them :-) |

Ok, basically we can see, that against 6.Be3 in the Najdorf the top players prefer 6...e5 with 7..Be6 etc. giving exciting play with opposite side castling and even having good prospects in the endgame. The poisoned pawn variation is also popular with Black (6.Bg5 Qb6), but White usually chose the tame 7.Nb3, something I seriously doubt we could get should we decide for the poisoned pawn. I only found one Dragon game where Black won, but that was because White withdrew from the tournament. I guess it's not really popular. |
