Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

Feb-15-07  TTLump: Sorry I missed the vote. I would have supported the dragon but I am OK with e6.

Yes, but as you are already aware, I don't get there very often.

Feb-16-07  brankat: <CG Team> Good news from <Akavall>! The MFO site is now operational again. Let the game go on!

I'll be the <Scarecrow> then?

Feb-17-07  brankat: <TheAlchemist> I think I noticed You have not been kibitzing/posting much in last 5-6 days, only 3 posts. Is everything OK? Exams?

Take care, my friend.

TheAlchemist: <brankat> Everything's OK, I just didn't have anything to say, I guess. I have to cut the crap a bit :-)
Feb-17-07  hitman84: <TTLump>

<Sorry I missed the vote. I would have supported the dragon but I am OK with e6.>

If g6 then Nc6 bc6, e5

Feb-17-07  Zebra: <hitman> That is similar to a line in the Levenfish. I think ...Nd7 is OK for black, though the resulting position looks a little odd. Compare Nunn vs Miles, 1982 - not quite the same of course, but I don't think the present position is any more dangerous. Anyway, that's of academic interest now. (I like the way people use that phrase to mean "no interest whatsoever"...)
Feb-17-07  brankat: <CG Team> The game has been postponed for 1 day, due to MFO's loss of time, while their site was shut down. So, their next move due by 3:00 PM EST, Sunday, Feb, 18/2007.
Feb-17-07  TTLump: <hitman84: <TTLump> <Sorry I missed the vote. I would have supported the dragon but I am OK with e6.>

If g6 then Nc6 bc6, e5>

Between your 'typo' and my lack of opening knowledge, I am not at all sure what you meant to say ...

was it <9...g6 10.Nb3 Be6 11.e5 > ? perhaps? The point being I guess 'what is a Dragon?' and 'when is a Dragon not a Dragon but a Najdorf?'

And then my next dumb question, is after 9...g6 10.Nb3, why not follow up with the logical 10...Bg7 ? Does 10.Nb6 somehow refute 10...Bg7?

And finally, (and no more dumb questions till after 5), why does my opening explorer still call it a Najdorf, even after I fianchetto the King Bishop?

Feb-17-07  TTLump: >TTLump: <hitman84: ...
If g6 then Nc6 bc6, e5>

Boy was it a dumb question! I just figured out what you meant, <g6, Nxc6,Bxc6, e5....> sorry if I made you scratch your head!

And I presume that is bad for Black because of the Queen exchange forcing the King move and preventing castling?

Feb-17-07  brankat: <TTLump> It is now only 7:00 AM in <hitman84>'s 'hood. Probably too early for analysis. Unless he's still scratching his head :-)

9...g6 10.Nxc6 bxc6 11.e5 dxe5 12.Qd8+ Kd8 13.Bc4 Ke8 14.0-0 Bg7 looks good for white with Q-side majority and two active ♗s

another variation..
9...g6 10.Nxc6 bxc6 11.e5 dxe5 12.Qd8+ Kd8 13.Bc4 e6 14.Bb6+ Ke8 15.0-0 Nd5 16.Ba5 Once again looks good for white.

If black plays 11...Nd7 12.exd6 exd6 13.Bd4 white stands better.

Feb-18-07  Zebra: I'm not mad on these variations either. Personally I wouldn't play 11 ...de. Though even after 11 ...de, white's sharpest line in the Levenfish is defused by the pawn on ...a6. Anyway, that kind óf position is not my style at all, and I'm not sorry we're not playing it. (Too many negatives there after a heavy night's drinking.)
Feb-18-07  chessmoron: MFO played <10. g4>.

10...d5 now?

jessicafischerqueen: kk I played through all 13 games <TTLump> has kindly found for us, and from our position...

Be7 played almost all the time

other moves

d5... (this could mess up our pawn
structure after exchanges?)

Qc7...

h6... (I don't like this one either, doesn't develop a major piece, and could compromise our King having a place to castle)

I like <Be7> best so far. Got to develop that bishop sooner than later, I think...

When/if our Knight is chased, he goes to Nd7 in all games <TTLump> has listed above... Sometimes has a chance to go to e5 after that...

Jess (I got to hand in a stinkin' school paper), if no one hears from me before the deadline, put me down for <Be7>, OK?

Cheers everyone!!

Feb-19-07  Swapmeet: Any thoughts on the idea of Na5/b5, either before or after Be7?

jessicafischerqueen: <Na5> This moves a piece twice during the opening, and what is the threat it might pose to white to justify a loss of tempo?

We got to devlop our King Bishop at some point...

Do you mean Na5, white g5, black Nd7, White a4, Black b5 preparing Black Ne4?

We have to worry about hanging our King out to dry in the center, no?

Just "thinking" out loud here.
