Dec-09-24 Ding Liren vs D Gukesh, 2024 (replies)

TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

TheAlchemist: White played a seemingly clever sacrifice, but the refutation on move 25 was simply stunning

TheAlchemist: <goodevans: Will we have another Milan-based pun tomorrow when its two big football teams face each other in the Champions League Semi-Final? https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsl... It's a huge reach, but you could call it even timelier. Unfortunately Slovaks call it ...

May-02-07  WBP: <Alchemist and team> I've been following the game with great interest (and am therefore a fan). Sorry I couldn't get in at the beginning, but I'd love to be involved in the next game, if possible.
May-02-07  Marco65: <WBP> I was about to write: "where are our fans when we most need it?" Thanks for following our efforts!

<Zebra> <Unfortunately I have not been able to be active for a while> It was evident you were busy, and I appreciated a lot that you kibitzed whenever you could!

I would also appreciate if you changed your mind about 26...Qf8 :-) imo we are hopelessly lost after that

May-02-07  Marco65: <I think we played some second rate moves in the early middle game (Rb8 comes to mind)> I agree, the fact we prefered to move the rook on c8 later might be a proof. I also remember 15...Qa5 didn't get the attention it deserved. And we never got another opportunity to put our queen to such a good square.

But that's only an inaccuracy imo, it's difficult to justify our current situation just by that. I think the whole 7...Nc6 line is suspect, we should have been more patient and play 7...Nf6 as it is more customary there. If 8.Be3 then e5 transposing into a regular Najdorf. It seems you get punished quickly if you go out of book in such opening.

Then, of course, ...Rxf7 made things worse.

But if we are able to keep a pawn vs the exchange there is still a lot to fight, even in the endgame.

When I find myself in such situations otb I say to myself: "Ok, I didn't see that, you are a stronger player and I'm just stupid stupid stupid! But now it's time to show you how hard I am to die!" I could turn in my favour positions much worse than this one.

Of course, correspondence chess is different, but who knows?

TheAlchemist: <...Rxf7 made things worse> Kh8 was the alternative and that would have ended matters quickly if I remember our assessment of it correctly

Maybe so, but I read an interesting commentary once by Vallejo, who, after moving a rook for the second time in only 3 moves, wrote that it's important to look at each single position from afresh and not be concerned with the past. I guess that's what makes them GMs :-)

TheAlchemist: Anyway, we shouldn't concern ourselves with the past either, we'll have time for that in a post-mortem if anyone will be interested (we'll ask Akavall to participate as well).
May-02-07  chessmoron: <...Rxf7 made things worse> No, I have to disagree with you. Kh8 is even worse. Rxf7 was first discovered by <TheAlchemist> and then myself commented what would it happen if we played 26...d5 in that line?
May-02-07  mckmac: <chessmoron> It's all water under the bridge now.I know I'm repeating myself - but there must be something here, right now, that we are missing!
May-02-07  Zebra: Have to go soon - just one last shot at rescuing 26 ...Qf8.

27.Nd7!? Qc8, 28.Nxe5 Rxc2+, 29.Bxc2 Rxf1, 30.Rxf1 de. I've probably missed something obvious...

I don't like Qe8, though if it is our only move I will accept the inevitable. Will call back once more before voting time.

May-02-07  chessmoron: <Zebra> Do we really have to be against ♕♖♗♗ + ♕♗♗...without the rook? That look terrible.
May-02-07  Zebra: Sorry I screwed up there, I can't even count any more.

OK, count me in for Qe8.

I need a beer. See you guys tomorrow.

May-02-07  mckmac: 07 <Zebra: Have to go soon - just one last shot at rescuing 26 ...Qf8. 27.Nd7!? Qc8, 28.Nxe5 Rxc2+, 29.Bxc2 Rxf1, 30.Rxf1 de. I've probably missed something obvious...>

I think Mr Zebra might have just strolled in and eaten all our lunches.

May-02-07  chessmoron: <mckmac> Don't be such an...oh nevermind. ;-)

May-02-07  Marco65: Ah it was that all the noise in the streets here... supporters of that quaint sport...
May-02-07  mckmac: <Marco65> <TA> Chessmoron and mckmac are supporting Zebra's Line.
May-02-07  mckmac: Correction - mckmac aupports <Zebra's> Line.
May-02-07  chessmoron: <mckmac> Please see diagram of what Zebra is suggesting:

We are not going to hold if there's a rook on their side.

May-03-07  Marco65: <mckmac> I guess you're joking aren't you? Smileys would help. Not even Zebra was supporting his own line any more!

TheAlchemist: What is done is done, we can't play Qf8 anymore anyway.
May-03-07  Marco65: <mckmac> There are some formalities to comply with. Our captain counted votes for Qe8 and there was a majority (relative to the 5 of us who are left of course).

If you think Qe8 has been posted by mistake, first double check this forum and then complain here to our captain.

If you think Qf8 deserves attention ask here for a timeout.

But all that must be done here, only TheAlchemist (or who he entitles in his place) is entitled to post moves in brankat's forum.

Officially, even if our captain misunderstands and posts a legal move nobody has ever discussed here, that is the team's move! Alhough I guess in such cases MFO can be kind enough to allow us to withdraw our move.

May-03-07  Marco65: I forgot: call me "sir" from now on :-)
