TheAlchemist: The genius of Ding's play to me was how (except Nb5) he made moves solely on his own half of the board and in 25 moves he completely outplayed Gukesh.

TheAlchemist: <Marco> Si, anche quello :-)

I wonder, since it's taking them so long, that they are considering something else than Qd4 too. Let's hope they choose it :-)

May-22-07  Elixir of Life: From Brankat's page: <Akavall: MFO plays <32. Qd4>. Played at 9:56 AM on May 22nd, next move is due by 10:00 AM on May 24th.>

Goody. Just what we planned :)

May-22-07  Marco65: Well, it's been fine playing with you guys!

We play 32...Qe5, or may as well resign now?

May-22-07  Marco65: <TheAlchemist> How is it proceeding with preparation of the Open in Portoroz? Has some big confirmed participation? Will you organize different tournaments, one for the players from the past, and other ones for "normal" levels?
May-22-07  chessmoron: I resign.

TheAlchemist: The gentlemanly thing to do would be to resign here, I think.

TheAlchemist: <Marco> Not yet, 1 player from the elite 2700 is what is being considered, but no name yet (since 1958 was the marked by Tal and the young Fischer, perhaps someone like Morozevich/Shirov + some young prodigy could be considered). It's still about a year away, so it's all still in the making right now. They are thinking of organizing a big open tournament (personally, I would find a high calibre berger + an open tournament the ideal solution, this way more big league players could come, but money is a factor here). Of course, 2700 players don't like playing in open tournaments (those damn ratings), so even bringing 1 to such an event would be a great accomplishment, probably the whole historical background appeal (plus adequate "compensation" :-)) might interest someone. I will be more up to date with the whole proceedings in the summer, when I'll volounteer to help if needed, now I don't have much time because of school.

BTW, I'm sure there'll be many Italian players, they've been regular guests in previous open tournaments here, but most were from right across the border, this might attract players from further away.

May-22-07  Marco65: Ok I also agree on resigning here

jessicafischerqueen: I'm sorry to see you guys resign, however, it was a very good fight short handed on your part.

I feel bad I left several weeks ago, but It was either no chess and pass school or vice versa.

I enjoyed working with you all when I was on the team, and hope to have a chance to work with you another time, or to play any of you in Correspondence.

Best regards, thanks,

Jess

May-23-07  Elixir of Life: Resign is my vote
May-23-07  Marco65: <Jessica> You made the right choice, don't feel sorry.

This game made me appreciate correspondence game. I'll take a break of some weeks then I'll probably subscribe an online corr site. What are the most popular? I intend to play only one game at a time, 2 days/move.

May-23-07  Marco65: <TheAlchemist> I read on your profile that the idea was to invite players from the past rather than current super GM. What about that? Are you seriously trying to convince Fischer?

In any case I'm curious, how much does it cost to "invite" a 2700 player? It must be a fortune!

jessicafischerqueen: <Marco> Thanks for your kind words.

<User: Shropshire> is the best person I know to ask about good Correspondence sites. He's an affable fellow and always helpful, if he's around. Drop a question in his forum, tell him I sent you if you like but it's not necessary.

Many of the CG.commers play at <gameknot>, but I've only played games in my own forum myself.

Apparently you can get an official correspondence rating and such at some of these sites.

Best of luck!! Correspondence chess kicks ass, I love it.

Jess

TheAlchemist: <Marco> The "old" players would invited as guests, as far as I know, most of them are probably in their 80's, could they even endure throughout the whole tournament? We've had Gelfand here a few years ago playing the Vidmar's memorial, but that was a closed Berger tournament. I don't know about the financial details, though.

TheAlchemist: Hm, it's always very hard to resign, in OTB games it usually takes me at least 10 minutes or so to gather the necessary strentgth :-)
May-23-07  Zebra: Yes, I also accept we should resign here. Thanks guys, especially to our captain, and our analysis engine <Marco>.
May-23-07  Eyal: Hello, everyone - that was a very interesting game that you played and I've been following it most of the time (with the help of Fritz 10) - sorry that you lost...

The way White finished this game off was quite impressive. 27.Rxf7 in combination with 28.Nd5!! was a very subtle tactical stroke - the kind of move a strong engine finds in a second, but which is not so easy for humans to appreciate. After that it appears that Black is lost (as it happened, you had some problems in the team at that stage of the game, but probably even a group of GMs working around the clock couldn't have saved you...)

According to Fritz, a key moment in black's downfall (i.e., where the evaluation numbers are jumping in favor of White) was 18...Bb7 - a better plan was 18...Qa5 19.b3 exf4 20.Bxf4 Ne5, after which 21.g6 can be met (relatively) safely with 21...h6.

TheAlchemist: <Eyal> Thanks! I can't remember exactly, but we probably considered 18...Qa5, but dismissed it, hehe.
May-23-07  Marco65: So it's officially over now!

I remember that ...Qa5 was proposed in place of 15...Rb8, after that nobody liked it any more.

I hope I'll have time to submit it to an engine tonight, very very interesting game.

<TheAlchemist> Otb, sincerely, I wouldn't have resigned now. I'd wait until I AM in material deficit, and even with one pawn and one exchange down I would still play. I don't give a damn what my opponent thinks, he can still make mistakes, and it's me who now has nothing to lose! A big psychological advantage.

Btw, on the other side of the board, I appreciate when someone doesn't resign too early and forces me to exercise my technique. Of course, when there is a full piece of difference and no compensation it's different.

May-23-07  Eyal: A correction to something I posted earlier - after 18...Qa5 White can play 19.g6! immediately (19...Qxa4 20.h6 gxh6 21.Bc4 with advantage to White). Still, 19...exf4 20.Bxf4 Ne5 in this line might be better for Black than what actually happened in the game.
May-23-07  Marco65: <TheAlchemist> Can you put back the link to gameknot? Still useful for post mortem analysis. Thanks.

Also, do you think ChessGames.com might be interested in inserting the game in the database?

May-23-07  Marco65: <Eyal> The team evaluation of that move is at pages 66-67. At the beginning many of us thought of 18...Qa5, but nobody even cared of 19.g6, our main worry being 19.h6. The analysis proved 18...Qa5 was playable, but 18...Bb7 seemed even better, so little by little all members were convinced to vote it.
May-23-07  WBP: Hey, guys. Thanks for an exciting effort, one for which you deserved a better fate. I know the team had some ups and downs, but it was very gratifying and inspiring watching you overcoming so much to keep in the game! Best of luck to you all--those who were able to stay on to the end, and those who had to depart, for whatever reason.
