OhioChessFan: <The Hague hosted the first 10 rounds, followed by 15 rounds in Moscow.>

This is an inconsistent construction. Either both cities should host, or the rounds should be in both cities. Maybe "The first 10 rounds were held in the Hague, followed by 15 rounds in Moscow." Or, "The Hague hosted the first 10 rounds, and Moscow hosted the next 15 rounds."

Jan-10-14  Boomie: <Ayatollah - the top 5 in the world happened to be roughly the 2 yanks and 3 Soviets>

According to Chessmetrics http://www.chessmetrics.com/cm/CM2/..., the top 10 peak rating list for the period 1946-1948 are as follows:

1. Mikhail Botvinnik
2. Miguel Najdorf
3. Paul Keres
4. Max Euwe
5. Gideon Ståhlberg
6. AA (deceased)
7. Samuel Reshevsky
8. Vassily Smyslov
9. Isaak Boleslavsky
10. David Bronstein

There are a few changes in the yearly lists but they don't seem significant. The one that really sticks out is the Black Najdorf, who obviously should have been included. Also notice that Fine is not in the top 10. He is 15th in the 3 year list. However one could argue that Fine should be included for his AVRO result.

I slightly prefer the first sentence after "......assisted by Alexander Kotov." The thought seems to flow better.

Jan-10-14  Boomie: <WCC Editing Project: All players except Botvinnik lodged at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen.>

I would use "stayed" instead of "lodged" which sounds like something an Elk might do. Using "stayed" also removes the "were lodged" kerfuffle.

<<Botvinnik reportedly announced to the others that he would not play in the Netherlands. He was angry about a Dutch news report that suggested his fellow Russians might collude to help him win the title.> Still wouldn't mind a dele of "to the others".

<Although Miguel Najdorf won at Prague, because of the new agreement, he wasn't invited to join the championship.>

I slightly prefer "Although Miguel Najdorf won at Prague, he wasn't invited to join the championship because of the new agreement.">

Opening to the floor the possibility "due to" is better than "because of". Opinions welcome.

I just stuck it in now-

<The time control was 40 moves in 2 1/2 hours and 16 moves per hour after that.<12,13> Players were permitted 2 assistants to help analyze adjourned games.<14> First place would receive $5,000; second $3,000; third $2,000; fourth $1,500; and fifth $1,000.<13> Milan Vidmar was arbiter, assisted by Alexander Kotov.<12,15> The first 10 rounds were held in the Hague, followed by 15 rounds in Moscow. Jan-10-14  Boomie: <Botvinnik had wanted lodgings closer to the Kierentuin playing hall>

Botvinnik wanted to stay closer to the playing hall...

Dodging lodging is becoming a fad.

Jan-10-14  Boomie: <which was an easy 20 minute walk from his new hotel>

This phrase can be cut as it doesn't add anything of interest to the sentence.

Jan-11-14  Karpova: <Jess>

Regarding the title: It was brought back to life after WWI in 1923 under the name <Neue Wiener Schach-Zeitung> but the old name was reinstated already in 1924, when it was called <Wiener Schach-Zeitung>. So <Neue Wiener Schach-Zeitung> only if the 1923 issues are quoted, which is not the case in Game Collection: WCC: Euwe-Alekhine Rematch 1937.

So all of the references there are simply to <Wiener Schachzeitung>.

Although, and now we may enter deepest hair-splitting territory, we may consider:

1855: <Wiener Schach-Zeitung>

1887-1888: <Wiener Schachzeitung>

1889: <Wiener Zeitung> (just a small special edition with a chessboard picture between <Wiener> and <Zeitung>)

1898-1916: <Wiener Schachzeitung>

1923: <Neue Wiener Schach-Zeitung>

1924-1938: <Wiener Schach-Zeitung>

As you can see, after the war, the name is hyphenated, although I'm not really sure if we should get that much into detail here. Or if it matters that much.

Here is the relevant section, adjusted for accuracy and relevance:

##############

All players except Botvinnik lodged at the Kurhaus in Scheveningen.<16> Botvinnik objected to the Kurhaus, explaining that he wanted to stay "in a hotel where I can get to... (the Kierentuin playing hall) on foot in twenty minutes."<17> At first the organizers refused. Only after Soviet consul Ivanovich Chikirisov offered to locate a different lodging did Botvinnik get permission to stay at the Hotel Twee Staden with his wife, daughter, and seconds Viacheslav Ragozin and Salomon Flohr. <17>

##############

The relevance, which is implied rather than directly stated (which is the way we like it), is

"What Mighty Mike wants, Mighty Mike gets."

This isn't anything anyone needs to do anything special about, because I'll handle it from my end.

But with reference to <citation format>, I have decided to go with the "Chicago Style":

EXAMPLE: http://www.princeton.edu/pr/pub/int...

Where necessary, I will adjust the citation format of any completed drafts according to these guidelines.

Jan-11-14  Boomie: Game Collection: WCC: Steinitz-Gunsberg 1890-1891

A year later, when Mikhail Chigorin got his <shot at the title> <insert match link>- Steinitz-Gunsberg World Championship Match (1890) Steinitz was asked why he hadn't chosen George Henry Mackenzie or Gunsberg.

Shouldn't that link be pointing to the Chigorin match?

Also there should be a comma before "Steinitz was asked".

Certainly possible.

Whoever he is, I have serious reservations about this young man's attitude.
