<WannaBe> I see you enjoy beating yourself up. Need a hand? :)

May-26-06  EmperorAtahualpa: <WannaBe> The USA team lost one of your most important defenders. :( Cory Gibbs has a knee injury as a result of the game against Morocco and will be out for several weeks.

He will be replaced by Gregg Berhalter, who plays for Energie Cottbus in Germany.

tpstar: <WannaBe> One component of serious play is being prepared for offshoot openings with either color. 1. b4 is rare but playable, with tricks and traps on the long diagonal, so consider a system besides 1 ... e5. I prefer 1. b4 d5 2. Bb2 Nf6 (daring White to play 3. Bxf6!? which they won't) followed by 3 ... e6 & 4 ... c5 with smooth development Fischman vs Gaile, 1976 The most aggressive approach would be 1. b4 d5 2. Bb2 Qd6!? 3. a3 e5 with a strong center B Lalic vs Uhlmann, 1980 which should also get your opponent quickly out of book. Good luck. =)
May-26-06  FICSwoodpusher: I know someone who plays 1. b4 sometimes and apprently the best reply to it is 1. ... c6
May-26-06  suenteus po 147: <tpstar> Your advice is largely the reason I chose to play 1.b4 against <WannaBe>. In the small tournament experience I've had you always have to be prepared for that one person who plays 1.a3 as white in every game because the moment he has someone unprepared for the unexpected half the game is already won for him. After playing that guy (and losing badly) I became a much better player dealing with unorthodox openings.

May-27-06  Zebra: <Wannabe> What pinot noir was it?

WannaBe: <EmperorAtahuapa> No, not at all, had a great night, chatted with <Swapmeet> some more about the Scotch opening on FICS.

<Zebra> California pinot, got it from the local grocery store. I've never really drank pinot noir (Usually a white Z. person) until I saw 'Sideways'. And I tried it, and am hooked.

May-27-06  Zebra: <Wannabe> We get quite a bit of Californian wine over here these days, but I haven't seen that one. Recently Germany has started producing some reasonable pinot noir, though it is expensive for what it is.

WannaBe: <Zebra> If you are asking specific brand, I did not list them. I bought some Robert Mondavi (Calif. central coast), Blackstone (California Monterrey county) and Beaulieu Vineyard (just listed as California).
