jessicafischerqueen: OK idea for a new category for the <Caissars>:

<Kibbutzer who posts the word "squab" the most times in one year>

What do you think?

I'm with Travis in that a few more bizarre categories should be added. I'd go for "Most unqualified previous winner of a category who for some inexplicable reason keeps getting votes every year"

Great idea~~

I'd like to add a similar category in your honor:

"Most unqualified previous non-winner of anything in his life who for very obvious reasons receives no votes for anything at all".

You could be the front runner!!

Let's call it the <Caissar Couldn't Get Elected Dog-Catcher in this Town> Award.

jessicafischerqueen: <Branko> it gets even worse- did you see that <Nako> is currently <all-time number one winner> at the <You Rang> predictions contest?

So if he won every division of the <Cassiars> he would then win the <Triple Crown>.

This hasn't been accomplished at <CG.com>, of course, since <Affirmed> managed it in 1978....

heh--

This reminds me of when I tried to "horn in" on your sports discussion about the <UCLA Bruins> a few years ago, only to be met with <stony silence> after I posted a few daring comments about the <Boston Bruins>..

Yes, as you suppose, Virginia, some girls like sports, and even Horse racing without hats.

My Dad took me to the horse races in Vancouver when I was 10 and I've been a fan ever since.

<Branko> will in fact confirm this if you ask him.

I am also a student of horse racing history, and thanks to <youtube> I have seen all of the Great races and horses in history.

My favorite of all time is the famous <Jockey Club Gold Cup> of 1978 which featured <three Triple crown winners> in the same race:

<Seattle Slew, Affirmed, and Joan Baez>.

Humorously, it was <Exceller> who actually won the race!! <The Slew> and <Affirmed> burned each other up with a ridiculously fast "speed duel" which set up the race for the closer <Exceller>. <The Slew> came back with unbelievable courage in the stretch and almost won--

Here it is: enjoy! (the drama starts before the race-- The Slew broke through the gate before the start)

http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=zZFr6...

Also, I DON'T WEAR HATS

Dec-13-08  brankat: <Jessicafischerqueen> I remember quite well the '78 Jockey Club Gold Cup from Belmont. Btw, the cup actually IS made of 14 Karat gold..

Although Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown year earlier ('77), together with a bunch of other races, I thought, and still do, this one was his best effort. He found himself in a "Sandwich" for more than half of the race, with Affirmed hugging the rail and saving ground. When Exceller showed up out of nowhere, Slew still fought back for the entire stretch run. Lost by a neck.

Which cost me a hundred bucks at about 3-1. A lot of money 30 years ago. Slew was the second favourite. The crowd was betting on Affirmed since he just won the '78 Crown. But, he was still a 3 year old at the time.

Btw, have You seen the 1989 Preakness Stakes? The epic duel between Sunday Silence and Easy Goer! Wow!!!

Haven't been at a racetrack in 11 years now. How I miss the action! Eleven year itch :-)

Dec-14-08  brankat: <Also, I DON'T WEAR HATS>

What DO You wear then? Wigs? :-)

heh- yes, IMO the 1978 <JCGC> is in the top-ten of all races I've seen on <youtube>. There are more than 1000 historical races posted here--

http://kr.youtube.com/user/partyman...

I'm with you on the temptation, but thanks to <youtube> and to this nifty <horse race game> I downloaded, and to not being able to read a Korean racing form, I've been able to stay clear of the gambling and still enjoy the thrill of the Sport of Kings.

I've seen the whole <Sunday Silence = Easy Goer> series on <youtube>.

Every single race they met each other is posted, if you can believe it.

BTW getting <The Slew> at 3-1 is a temptation perhaps even God couldn't resist--

How did you feel when he broke through the gate before the race started?

It's not usually a good sign, but as you say, this was possibly the bravest race The Slew ever ran.

I think he is the greatest in history- and his bloodline seems to "Affirm" this..

HAHAHAHAAHAH

Actually as you know <Affirmed> is no slouch either. His line is particularly potent on <the lawn>...

Mrs. Misses her Horse Days as well...

Dec-14-08  brankat: <jessicafischerqueen> Thanks for the link. I just watched '89 stakes from Pimlico for the first time in almost 20 years! Almost as exciting as it was way back then :-) That time I actually did cash in :-) S.Silence was again the second choice, at almost 4-1!

Slew's breaking out of the gate was what probably cost him the race. As they say: 'Energy expanded early on is not available later." True, not only in horse racing :-) And in that race the margin of the loss was a matter of inches.

Affirmed was as good as they come. His 3 wins in '78 Triple Crown amounted to a total margin of less than a 1/4 length: a nose, a head, a neck! An unmistakable sign of a great fighter. A will to win. He never lost a race when entering the stretch with a lead. The same was true in S.Slew's case.

Dec-14-08  Mrs. Alekhine: <Branko>

heh- and yes, what about that <Alydar> who has not been mentioned in print yet in our thread??

Without him, by what measuring stick could we calculate the true greatness of <Affirmed>?

Here is some info you probably know concerning <Alydar's> bloodstock legacy that puts <Affirmed's> achievement in even clearer light--

Hi son <Alysheba> is still the only horse in history to win the <Breeder's Cup Classic> two years in a row-- an almost impossible achievement...

Not to mention that <Easy Goer> was also Alydar's son.

And Alydar was <Lure's> grandfather, and <Lure> is still the only horse in history to win the <Breeder's Cup Mile> (on the turf) two years in a row...

Given the success of the offspring of <Slew, Affirmed, and Alydar>, I think the relative failure of <Secretariat's> children is still one of the greatest mysteries in horse racing history...

PS I once saw a <Brazilian-bred Turf Sprinter> break out of the gate and run half way up the track before they corralled him and stuffed him back in the gate.

He was sent off at astronomical odds and proceeded to BLAST the field by about six lengths, wire to wire...

(I suspect he was full of secret Ephedrine, or possibly Aviation Fuel..)

Dec-14-08  Mrs. Alekhine: <MannBee>

I hope there is still time to add a <New Caissar> category before the nomination period ends.

I propose

<Best Sire> as a new category.

For all you or I <really> know, I may be one of your illegitimate daughters, so I'd like to nominate

<Wannabe> as the

<Best Sire> in this new category.
