alexmagnus: The "3-to-20-calibrating" on the January 2009 list is done. "Deflation 1 point" towards the previous list, i.e. 10 pts towards the "base list" (July 2000). The top-25 after it looks like this:

Jan-02-09  amadeus: <alexmagnus>, I think your calculations are not correct. Jeff Sonas uses only players that are ranked #3-20 on <both> lists:

From http://db.chessmetrics.com/CM2/Form... <I take everyone who is ranked between #3 and #20 on both lists, average them together, and adjust the second month's list up or down by a constant amount...>

Jan-02-09
Premium Chessgames Member
alexmagnus: Not really. I mean, what is the sense of comparing <different> players?
Jan-02-09  amadeus: He doesn't use different players: he uses players that are ranked between 3-20 on both lists.

<By excluding the top two players, I'm hoping to avoid bad effects caused by a player who shoots to the top of the list from one month to the other, and the same thing in reverse by ignoring people who plummet out of the top 20 between one month and the next. In this way I am hopefully capturing a group of players whose strength is remaining relatively constant.>

That is: if a player is ranked 17 on the first list and 23 in the second list, he doesn't fit Sonas' criteria. If a player is ranked 14 in the first list, and 19 on the second, then he is ok.

alexmagnus: Aha ok then I have to redo my calculations :)

alexmagnus: "Komm, lass uns tanzen in den Banach-Raum,
Wo Punktepaare wohlgeordnet sind,
Und Riemannsche Blätter rascheln im Wind,
Gefaltet, geheftet, schön wie im Traum.

Ich pfeiffe auf Bernoullis Fixpunktsatz,
Was soll'n mir Hilbert, Euler oder Venn
Mit ihren Indizes von eins bis n,
Wenn Du mich liebst, mein rationaler Schatz!

Fixpunkte träumen von Kontraktionen,
Vektor schmeichelt der schönen Matrize,
Spalten bring er in siedende Hitze,
Heiß und ergodisch glühen die Zonen.

Mordells Vermutung ist kein leerer Wahn,
Denn Deine Kurven sind mein höchstes Ziel,
Ich zählte süßer Punkte endlich viel,
Und meine Graphen kreuzten ihre Bahn.

Du bist mein maximales Ideal,
Der Zustand meiner Liebe ist stabil,
Doch deine Kovarianten sind labil
Und unbestimmt wie Eulers Integral.

In Deinen Augen glänzt der Eigenwert,
In jedem Seufzer schwingt ein Tensor mit,
Du weißt nicht, wie mein Operator litt,
Hast Du ihm doch Funktionen stets verwehrt.

Den Ring aus Polynomen gab ich Dir,
Dazu die Markov-Kette mit dem Stein,
All Deine Tensorfelder waren mein,

Näht man mein topologisches Leichenhemd,
Vergiß mich nicht, werd mir nicht teilerfremd
Und sing am Grab mir lineare Lieder!"

From Stanislaw Lem's "Cyberiad" (German version, I like it more than the English or Russian one - never saw the Polish original though).

As I said,I still didn't complete my study but... Number theory it is/ will be.

alexmagnus: It may sound crazy but I don't know yet. It is quite possible that I'll take some job outside my narrow specialization (i.e. as a mathematician but not as a number theoretic). I'm just too bad to stay on the uni for research. So I guess I will not know what I will do until I actually find a job - wherever it will be.
Apr-12-09  zarg: Going from number theory to cryptography ain't far. If you like a job in the industry, my tip for you is to learn C and Java programming, and take some basic crypto before you leave the University. :)
