 | | tpstar: <juniper anole> Thanks for voting! You may choose up to nine more games by January 15 if you like. <Count Wedgemore> Thanks for voting! Great list. Seven new games! ;>D |
|
Jan-10-19 | | Count Wedgemore: <tpstar> Please note that the Aronian-Mamedyarov game that I nominated, is from Norway Chess (Aronian won the game), not their encounter in the Chess Olympiad which I see many others have nominated. That game was certainly good as well (23...Bxg2 was a nice tactical shot), but my pick had a really interesting endgame, very skillfully executed by Aronian, where I think it's hard to really see where Mamedyarov went wrong. I think both players played with a high level of precision in that game. |

Jan-10-19 | | Keyser Soze: Hi there, my list:
1.
Jobava vs S Sulskis, 2018 "Sulskis Immortal" ;p
2. Aronian vs Kramnik, 2018 masterpiece 90's type from kramnik.
3. Kramnik vs Caruana, 2018 Great tatical game..When you thought that white was doomed.. 4. Stockfish vs AlphaZero, 2018 AlphaZero should have 5 or 6 games on the list
5. AlphaZero vs Stockfish, 2018 maybe 7..
6. M Vachier-Lagrave vs Carlsen, 2018 Great endgame.
7. T Hillarp Persson vs T Laurusas, 2018 Spetacular finish by Persson.
8. Karjakin vs Caruana, 2018 39. Bxf7!
9. Carlsen vs W So, 2018 Probably the best Magnus game of the year.
1. Leko vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2018 A nice fighting game.
cheers! |

 | | tpstar: <Keyser Soze> Thanks for voting! Great choices. Two new computer games! ;>D |
|
Jan-10-19 | | Count Wedgemore: <Keyser Soze> That was a cool list you posted. What an impressive king march by White in that Persson-Laurusas game! And Jobava-Sulskis was a wild one. Very creative play by both players, perhaps a bit too creative :) <OCF> is right. It sure is great fun to play through these nominated games. Many of these games had gone completely under my radar, like the Jobava-Sulskis game, for instance. |

Jan-11-19 | | juniper anole: 2) D Andreikin vs M Lagarde, 2018 |

Jan-12-19 | | juniper anole: 3) Caruana vs Aronian, 2018 |
|
Jan-14-19
 | | tpstar: <juniper anole> Thanks for voting! You may list more choices by the end of tomorrow January 15, then the Best Games contest ends and results announced starting January 16. Have fun voting! |
|
Jan-14-19 | | juniper anole: 4) J Zawadzka vs Sasikiran, 2018 What games will appear in the collection? I'm wondering how I can view nominees in the future. |
|
Jan-14-19
 | | tpstar: <juniper anole> The Top Ten will be announced one day at a time, then stored in a Game Collection for future reference. Reviewing all of the nominees would require going back and reading the kibitzing during the voting process. If you come across games you like, you should store them in your own Game Collection to review them later. =) |

Jan-15-19 | | FairyPromotion: <tpstar>, great to see you around as well! I'd like to thank you, <bgitw>, and <OhioChessFan> for your efforts in organizing this years edition of Game of the Year Contest, and to everyone who participated. This year I hadn't follow much chess except for the top events (Candidates, Olympiad and WC Match), so I relied heavily on games suggested by others. Just like <OCF>, I always go over every nominated game. I'll add a few comments on my choices:
The top choice was easy this year. Tiger's King march was one of the greatest ever, and IMO clearly superior to Short's famous win against Timman in 1991. H Geiger vs W Wurm, 1930 is it's main rival. Personally I have a strict only human games rule for these contests, which I have applied even in 2014 when I would have had 3 games in my top 10 (Arasan vs Critter, 2014, Crafty vs Houdini, 2014, and Stockfish vs Jonny, 2014). I also try to follow TCEC seasons, and stumble upon many great combinations there, many of which don't end up in cg. But with all the love that AlphaZero got in this and last years contests I made an exception, and a "totally worth it" one. Stockfish just lays the smack on Google's AI one dazzling move after the other. 3-4 are games I stumbled upon only last week, but have left huge impression on me. 5-7 are games from elite tournaments that I had the chance to follow live. 8-10 are wild and spectacular finishes that I wanted to share with everyone. Unless I missed something, so far only Vitiugov's win was nominated. V S Gujrathi vs D Debashis, 2018 and D Paravyan vs D Bocharov, 2018 barely missed the cut. May 2019 bring us even more awesome games! |

Jan-15-19
 | | Penguincw: I've reviewed all the games, and did want to cast a vote, but wanted to do it when I was less busy (ex. such as last day of voting). Of course, I somehow thought it was FRIDAY, and not TODAY. Anyhow, here's my rushed picks.
1. T Hillarp Persson vs T Laurusas, 2018 2. I Bocharov vs Rublevsky, 2018 3. A Sarana vs Jakovenko, 2018 4. R Rapport vs M Bluebaum, 2018 5. Grischuk vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2018 6. D Andreikin vs M Lagarde, 2018 7. Kramnik vs Caruana, 2018 |
|
Jan-15-19
 | | tpstar: <Penguincw> Thanks for voting! You have one more hour to add up to three more games. ;>D |
|
Jan-17-19 | | Keyser Soze: Great. And nice puns! |
|
Jan-18-19 | | Paragua: Tpstar, i believe you made some slight error. SO vs CARLSEN which placed 9th on the list got only 13 points [from you 8pts and diceman 5 pts). CARLSEN vs SO is also 13th points [from OhioChessFabn 5pts, diceman 6 pts and KEYSER SOZE 2Pts.] I think Keyser soze's vote of 2 pts was erroneously credited to SO vs CARLSEN. |
|
Jan-18-19
 | | tpstar: The So-Carlsen game got one point from Game Collection: Best of 2018 and one point from Game Collection: OhioChessFan's favorite games of 2018 to make 15 points total, tying for #9 in the contest. You are supposed to enjoy the results and play over those games. |
|
Jan-18-19 | | FairyPromotion: <9) Rook Deep Six: Anand vs Caruana, 2018> <tpstar>, for those who might have not stumbled upon it, wasn't this a wonderful chance to reference your legenday post on the <Zapata Manuever>?
A Zapata vs Darcy Lima, 2001 =D |
|
Jan-18-19
 | | tpstar: <FairyPromotion> Ha! Short must have felt awful dropping a Rook with the whole world watching. Compare to Anand's 42. Rd6! winning cleanly. What a great reference to site history. |
|
Jan-18-19
 | | tpstar: Oh yeah, Nigel Short used to visit here, before he was chased away in November 2017. Good thing the Best Games Contest has a zero tolerance policy toward cyberstalking. |
|
Jan-26-19
 | | OhioChessFan: Thanks for making the site better and not worse. |
|
Jan-26-19
 | | tpstar: Thanks to everyone who participated in the Game Collection: Best Games of 2018 Contest. I hope you had fun voting. Keep track of your favorite games for 2019 and we'll do this all again next year! https://youtu.be/JOXfw-TtJj8 |
