OhioChessFan: I always enjoy this, mostly to see some games I might have missed. Not sure why so many Rook and Pawn endgames caught my eye this year, but so be it. As always, “Not always the objectively best games, but games I like for one reason or another.”

1. Mamedyarov vs Caruana, 2018
Mamed's Best in an Up and Down Year

2. V S Gujrathi vs L Johansson, 2018
Elegant Rook and Pawn ending

3. Jakovenko vs I Nepomniachtchi, 2018
I’m usually attracted to positional wins, but this is just a howitzer blast. Jako smashes his way to a win.

4. S Shankland vs A Rakhmanov, 2018
I chose this more as a representative of Shankland’s many brilliant games this year.

5. Kramnik vs Grischuk, 2018
I keep hoping Kramnik can hang on to his elite skills one more year, one more year. This game tells me I have nothing to worry about.

6. Carlsen vs W So, 2018
Carlsen’s Masterpiece of the Year

7. V Kunin vs Sven Horn, 2018
Another Rook and Pawn endgame grind.

8. R Wojtaszek vs Adams, 2018
Wojtaszek’s best at Isle of Man.

9. Karjakin vs Topalov, 2018
Karjakin’s best game of the year. If you look at the Pawn structure after 13 moves, you know Black is in trouble already. Karjak does a great job of converting.

10. P Palachev vs A Esipenko, 2018
Nice endgame technique in one more Rook and Pawn ending.

Jan-03-19  Paragua: Wow it would be hard to select game of the year. So far, there are only 3 games voted alike.

OhioChessFan: Just for perspective, here's what happened last year:

<14 voters nominated 88 games.>

I just enjoy the show and play over every game nominated, as each one had something that someone found noteworthy. I have noticed there are 3 nominations of 10 games, and only one has mentioned the WCC.

  offramp: Carlsen vs Caruana, 2018.

Where computers showed a mate in 30 that no one believed at first. If Caruana had been luckier, this game might have made him World champion.

offramp: T Hillarp Persson vs T Laurusas, 2018

A better king walk than Short's one against Timman.

Sorry about the double post.

tpstar: 1) T Hillarp Persson vs T Laurusas, 2018 The King walk of the year finishes off a fantastic victory by White.

2) Aronian vs Mamedyarov, 2018 23 ... Bxg2!! is a brilliant and unexpected shot. Mamedyarov had a monster year in 2018.

3) W So vs Carlsen, 2018 Great opening, great middlegame, great endgame, great win. Go Wesley!

4) Aronian vs Kramnik, 2018 A marvelous attacking brilliancy by Kramnik in the Candidates event.

5) R Praggnanandhaa vs T S Ravi, 2018 Great win by the Indian prodigy with a bright future.

6) A H T dos Santos Fier vs R Aloma Vidal, 2018 White neatly sacrifices BRR for mate!

7) M Bluebaum vs Vitiugov, 2018 25 ... Ra3!! caps off this entertaining game with a Philidor's Legacy motif.

8) Jobava vs S Sulskis, 2018 After the complications, Black is down a whole Rook (!) but closes it out anyway.

9) A Korobov vs P Maghsoodloo, 2018 A wild attack featuring an aggressive White King.

10) B Roselli Mailhe vs N Sulava, 2018 A nice IQP game by White leading to a classic sacrifice on f7.

*****

Honorable Mention = Akobian vs S Shankland, 2018 Precise game by the new US Champion.

Jan-05-19  Paragua: Tnx tpstar. Nice games.
Jan-07-19  whiteshark: My Top* 2018 selection:

1) T Hillarp Persson vs T Laurusas, 2018 - This game won the brilliancy price of the Olympiad!

2) R Praggnanandhaa vs T S Ravi, 2018 When Pragg went into Tal mode...

3) Ding Liren vs J K Duda, 2018 <25.Nb5!!> A fantastic piece sacrifice from "Mr. Unbeatable" within his triple digits streak.

4) Navara vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2018 (Voted for Best Bundesliga Game in Season 2017/18) 25...h6!! DEFLECTION

5) Aronian vs Kramnik, 2018 Amazing from start to finish, absolutely unbelievable. (7...Rg8! / 19...Rxg5!)

8) I Nepomniachtchi vs G Meier, 2018 Storming the French line

9) Grischuk vs Ding Liren, 2018 A breathtaking exchange of blows

10) Speelman vs D Bisby, 2018 Speelman's agony continues

*The selection criteria could easily be subjective and inconsistent. ;)

So many great games! =)

Jan-07-19  diceman: Once again computers top the list:

1) AlphaZero vs Stockfish, 2018

There's a special place in my heart for this line.

2) AlphaZero vs Stockfish, 2018

Break out your D to A converters, computers go "old school" analog!

3) T Hillarp Persson vs T Laurusas, 2018

Steinitz would smile!

4) Aronian vs Mamedyarov, 2018

Brilliant tactics from Mamedyarov

5) Carlsen vs W So, 2018

Fischer said" "Sometimes you give a lesson"

6) W So vs Carlsen, 2018

Fischer said: "Sometimes you get a lesson"

7) R Praggnanandhaa vs T S Ravi, 2018

The next generation

8) I Nepomniachtchi vs Kramnik, 2018

A changing of the guard?

9) Grischuk vs M Vachier-Lagrave, 2018

Passed pawns must be pushed.

10) Carlsen vs Caruana, 2018

Noteworthy Championship game, because Caruana had a win, even if no one saw it.

Truth be told, I could easily come up with 10 AlphaZero games.

Humans need to get on their horse!
(or maybe that would be knight)

offramp: <OCF>, I was. I got a bit tongue-tied. I made my first post, then thought of another game.

THEN I read the request to make one single list; a very reasonable request.

I decided to post my second game and leave it at that, with my first game as <1> and the second one as <2> and no other selections. It might seem a bit desultory but I had trouble of thinking of more games.

Jan-09-19  juniper anole: 1) Yu Yangyi vs Nakamura, 2018
Jan-09-19  Count Wedgemore: Here are my picks for best games of 2018:

Anand vs Caruana, 2018 -- Caruana, who is usually so strong with the Petrov, is outplayed by a perfectly calculating Vishy.

B Adhiban vs Mamedyarov, 2018 -- An entertaining game with an unbalanced endgame where both players had winning chances.

Karjakin vs Mamedyarov, 2018 -- Beautifully played queen endgame by Shak who came out swinging with black against Karjakin.

Aronian vs Caruana, 2018 -- Aronian's attack fails spectacularly against a brilliant Fabiano in top form.

A Giri vs Carlsen, 2018 -- Giri plays a little too passive early on and gets ruthlessly punished by the World Champion.

Aronian vs Mamedyarov, 2018 -- Two of the World Elite's most enterprising players battle it out in great fashion.

Kramnik vs J K Duda, 2018 -- The former World Champion demonstrates his superb endgame skills in this fine game.

M Vachier-Lagrave vs Carlsen, 2018 -- Carlsen slowly outmaneuvers MVL in the endgame of this slightly unorthodox Pirc.

Mamedyarov vs W So, 2018 -- Wesley gets outsmarted by Mamedyarov in a seemingly drawish endgame.

Jakovenko vs I Nepomniachtchi, 2018 -- Jakovenko sacrifices two pawns for a powerful attack and knocks out Nepo in fine style.
