 | | chessgames.com: <Using the Olga Viewer at this game Zytogorski vs Staunton, 1841> It's a limitation with Olga that it can't cope with games that don't begin on move #1. We can "fix" it by renumbering the moves by hand, but there are a handful of other games like it which need the same attention. Ideally, Olga's code can be improved instead. |

 | | WannaBe: <chessgames.com> How difficult is it: Making game listings sort-able?
e.g. if I go to the Candidates page
World Championship Candidates (2018) And I ask myself, how many games there are that is English opening. (Clicking 'Opening' would sort the table) Or I want to know longest/shortest game played. Etc... Not sure how complex the algorithm have to be, if the number of games span more than one page. As I have long listing (100 games per page) as option, instead of 25. Results would not need to be sortable, as the bottom of listings lets you select white/black wins or draw. Not quite sure about the year or event field, as they are generally sorted already, as PGNs are updated with dates and locale. |
|
Mar-19-18
 | | Annie K.: <WannaBe> you can do that search from the homepage Advanced Search, use the Event field, and combine with any other parameters you want. http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... |

 | | WannaBe: <Annie K.> Thanks for the info/heads up. Way too many clicks... An user have to return to the home page, enter all that info? I'd rather click on a field within that page. Plus the drop down for Event does not go back far enough... |

 | | chessgames.com: <<chessgames.com> How difficult is it: Making game listings sort-able?> (i.e. on something other than the date field). I know what you're saying. In a perfect world, every column in the table would have a little ⬇⬆ toggle next to it which would let you sort on that field, so you could look at games by the number of moves, the ECO code, even where it was played. It's not difficult in the sense of "I have no idea how that could be accomplished." However it's complicated in that it would require the creation of many new "index files", and each of these files would have to be updated every time a game is inserted, deleted, or changed. Also it would require changes to how we present the tables; as you know, right now the sort-by-date is a hardwired default. You see, the date field is indexed along side just about every other field we offer. We don't simply have an index of "games ordered by ECO" but rather "games ordered first by ECO, secondly by date." That's why it's super fast to get a list of all D44 games in chronological order. If we also wanted to get ECO in "game length order" the ideal method would involve a new index, "games ordered first by ECO, secondly by game length." Filters (like "white wins", "black wins", "draw") are complicated as well, but require no internal changes to how we already present the tables. If your desire to focus on specific openings was shared by the many, some kind of "screen by ECO" field would definitely be the easier approach. ...
BTW I really like your idea of showing Stockfish analysis as a symbol. Emojis already have this cute little microscope: 🔬
While we're at it, there's also the notion of showing which games are "notable" or at least relatively notable in the same space. Some kind of fire icon, or multiple icons could show the degree of "heat" there is on the game. 🔥
Look for it soon. |

| Mar-23-18 | | technical draw: <I think <Monaa Lisaa> might have been clearer.> Your post reminds me of the HBO series "The Winds of War". Ali MacGraw was playing the part of am American Jewish historian. When the Nazis were deporting the foreigners an SS officer looked at her and said: "You look a little dark. What is your heritage?" She says, "Italian". "And what is your mother's maiden name?" "Mona Lisa!" |
