chessgames.com: Apologies to people who may have received a "server overloaded" message earlier today. Some ridiculous hackers were performing a denial of service attack. They weren't particularly successful.

<Tabanus: <CG> On Chessgames Help (What are 'Notable Tournaments'?), perhaps it should be mentioned that only TI events get counted.> Coincidentally I was reading the Chessgames Help last night and noticing how truly awful parts of it are. Some sections are timeless and classic, but half of it really needs an overhaul. I made some changes including the one you noted. There's also a section now simply explaining what the TI is.

<takchess: Suggestion. for those that submit pgn for game submission to cg; It would be helpful to track them.> I fully agree, and moreover, the entire system needs an enormous overhaul. The current model is untenable and has fallen into disrepair. I very much want to see a way for submitted games not only to be monitored, but to have a page for each one, so that you can play through the game you submitted. Other people should be able to come there as well. Potential errors could be brought up by members after they are submitted but before they are included.

<morfishine> From our Blow the Whistle page, defining what a personal attack is: <Any form of name-calling (e.g., making up a pejorative nickname for another member) is forbidden, whether based on the screen-name or their name in real life.> You don't bolster your case by calling other people toilets. About your "case", if you want to email and me discuss your opinion in detail, that's fine. What we won't have is a discussion in this form about all the members you dislike and why they should be banned.

Did you see the press conference? It should go on the front page, when it gets reported.

chessgames.com: <The 13 Thai boys said that they kept their minds occupied playing chess! Did you see the press conference?> No, I hadn't. The news is very sparse referring to chess but surely we'll hear more in the next day or two. Thanks for pointing that out.

offramp: Speaking of ignore lists, could you change the picture of the guy at Ignore List?

He is meant to have a piece of white paper or tape over his mouth, but in fact it looks like an open mouth where the individual teeth have not yet been delineated. There must be a better picture.

Jul-18-18  Robed.Bishop: <offramp> Perhaps we should use the iconic three monkeys - one covering its eyes, one covering its ears, and one covering its mouth.

Telemus: <chessgames.com> I like the "find similar games" feature very much. Yesterday I looked at this one: Games Like Lautier vs Yudasin, 1990.

There it is claimed "NOVELTY: 17...Rd8". However, I didn't find any predeceesor after White's 17th move in the lists. Do I overlook something? Thanks!

chessgames.com: <Telemus> I'm not quite sure what you're saying. At the end of the page are 3 games including the game analyzed, Lautier vs Yudasin, 1990. And that's the only game that continues 17...Rd8, as promised.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Telemus> "Novelty" is used by the Find Similar Games feature to indicate the first move not played in any other game in the database, rather than the first move not played in any older game in the database. (The novelty of Castellvi vs Vinyoles, 1475 is 6.h3, not 1.e4.)

chessgames.com: Oh, now I understand what Tel meant by "predecessor" — yes, thank you SQ, that must have been the point of the misunderstanding.

  chessgames.com: Three small improvements:

1. When you click on games in the tables of the Similar Games feature, it will take you to the relevant position within the game, not the starting position.

2. The toggle that says <A COMPUTER ANNOTATED SCORE OF THIS GAME IS AVAILABLE. [CLICK HERE]> is now available for mobile users as well as the desktop version.

3. The preference option that used to read <Show sacrifices in all search results.> now reads <Do not show sacrifices search results.> The default is now to show all sacrifices in game tables for all members (including non-premium.)

MissScarlett: <The preference option that used to read <Show sacrifices in all search results.> now reads <Do not show sacrifices search results.> The default is now to show all sacrifices in game tables for all members (including non-premium.)>

I do not consider this an improvement. What definition of or criteria for sacrifices are being used? How about games with multiple sacrifices (however defined)? Why should the first one be prioritised?

Telemus: <SwitchingQuylthulg> Thank you for the better explanation.

<chessgames.com> The term 'novelty' has a fixed meaning in chess, I would say. But the implementation is probably not easy, say, if a move has been applied for the first time several times in the same year and the games don't have month and day information, then one cannot decide in which game the novelty appeared. Maybe another term is a solution?! No idea.

chessgames.com: <Maybe another term is a solution?!> If there is a more accurate term I'd be happy to change it in a second. It never occurred to me until you and SQ pointed out that we've been using the term inaccurately (at least for most older games).

It is a wonderful fact of chess that if two people sit down and play, whether grandmasters or patzers, there must come a certain move in which that game becomes unique from all other games ever played before.

But what do we call this move?

• The differentiating move
• The unique move
• The original move
• The innovation
• ???

Is there an accepted term for it, or must we go our own way here?

Jul-20-18  Paint My Dragon: Sounds a bit dull, but it's the 'new' move. If 'novelty' doesn't feel appropriate, then that's what chess authors tend to call it.

offramp: The Andorran Open begins today.
http://open.escacsandorra.com/
The first prize was going to be the Golden Vishy award, but he has yet to agree.

Hence the Tournaments other name:

<The Andorran and/or Anand d’Or open d’Andorre.>

It’s quite a mouthful if you say it with a poolball in your gob.

Jul-21-18  whiteshark: "The Accentus GM tournament of this year's <Biel International Chess Festival> is a 6-player double round-robin tournament taking place from 22 July to 1 August 2018 in Biel, Switzerland featuring the reigning <World Champion Magnus Carlsen, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Peter Svidler, David Navara and local hero Nico Georgiadis.>

Players receive 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for 20 moves, then 15 minutes to the end of the game, plus a 30-second increment starting from move one.

Jul-21-18  zanzibar: I've asked this before, but I'll keep repeating myself periodically as needed:

Please add an indicator to a game link when the link goes to a non-starting position in the game.

Bacrot vs Leko, 2008

Maybe, something like this:
