Sep-17-09  eightsquare: <Chessgames> Do only premium members have access to the live broadcast of the pearl spring tournament?

chessgames.com: <dabearsrock1010> About the "funky and choppy" problem, many people might laugh at that description but you hit the nail on the head. I know exactly what you are talking about. When the pieces move it's like they are dragging through molasses and occasionally they get outright stuck. It's maddening and my heart goes out to you.

<Do you have any solutions to this?> No simple solution I'm afraid, but there is sort of a check-list of things that you should try.

1. Try a different Java viewer. E.g. is MyChess equally as "funky" as Chess Viewer Deluxe?

2. Note that MyChess has a feature about animation, if you click on preferences it says "Turn animation off." The makers of MyChess put that feature in exactly because of problems like you are experiencing! This is hardly a solution, but a "workaround".

3. Try it with a different browser, e.g. download Firefox and see if it has the same problem.

4. Are there any other programs running? Even security software? If so, try turning it off just for a minute, as an experiment.

5. For PC users we always say "go to www.java.com and get the latest version" but for Mac users this is supposed to be done for you automatically. There are ways to force Java to be updated on your Mac although in theory this should never be necessary. As a last resort it sounds like something to try.

In summary we're really sorry to hear about this kind of bugginess, but we'll help all we can. It's always a good piece of advice with computers to learn more about the problem, like the above ideas will help you do.

Sep-18-09  Open Defence: <cg.com> any thoughts on the malformed url issue ?
Sep-18-09  whiteshark: I have downloaded the 'ROOK_AND_PAWN_ENDING_PGN' (last modified 24-May-2009) with move than 34,648 games. But there are many many games twice, many triply and even some games fourfold (first to see in Stauton vs Fournier de Saigames 25-28).

Furthermore there are no games from 2007/2008/2009 in this zipfile!!!

To me three things are required:

- you need an additional search algorithm that sorts out duplicates before a zipfile is generated.

- new games are included

- you have to make sure that this won't happen again when updating the zipfiles the next time.

Could you change/alter it?

Btw this is only an adjusted repost from Nov-04-07

chessgames.com: <Open Defense> Yes, we have some thoughts. It gets kind of technical but if you're interested, here goes. There is a totally separate issue that somebody brought up months ago about Chessgames having some tags in a technically incorrect order. I don't think this matter of the out-of-order-tags causes the problem you are experiences, but it does indicate that we are going to have to do a reprocess of ALL games in the database, changing the PGN slightly for every single one. Once we do that, maybe--just maybe--this weird problem will go away.

Peligroso Patzer: Please note the following proposed correction posted by another kibitzer earlier today on the featured GotD (Sax vs Ljubojevic, 1980):

<Olavi: The score is wrong. It must be 12.Re1, of course, as given everywhere else.>

[The CG scoresheet for this game currectly has 12. Rd1.]

chessgames.com: <whiteshark> We had no idea that there were duplicate games in the rook_and_pawn_ending.pgn file. If that is true then I imagine there are duplicates in all of our endgame files. I suppose that doesn't hurt you if you are importing the games into software but it's a waste of space and bandwidth, we should fix that immediately.

The problems with missing games (from 2007 and up, really?) is also inexplicable. Obviously the endgame-zipfile feature needs to be examined; we'll put this on the list of "known bugs".

Coincidentally we're running the zipfile computer today so we'll take a look at it before we run it, especially with regards to the endgame queries. Thanks for pointing it out.

Phony Benoni: J Mason vs A Schottlaender, 1880 brings up a warning message: <This game's PGN data does not meet the Seven Tag Roster requirement for mandatory set of tags>.

Seems to be missing the <Site> tag, which should be "Wiesbaden".

Tabanus: <chessgames.com> Since the following two are GM's I take my chances here:

1) Av Bykhovsky (15 games) and Avigdor Bykhovsky (23 games) should be merged, 2) Leonid D Gofshtein, L D Gofstein and Zvulon Gofshtein are same player (name change, FIDE has Leonid).

Sep-19-09  LIFE Master AJ: A suggestion: Why not let all the users rank the various (game) collections. There are so many good collections here ...

#1.) Which ones are the most popular, i.e., which ones gets the greatest number of hits?

#2.) Which ones give players the most pleasure?

I really think this would be a great idea. (And I truly don't think any of mine would make it into the top 100, I'm just not that popular here.)

I am just curious, that's all.

chessgames.com: <LMAJ> We like the idea of having game collections ranked but simply making a list of the collections that are viewed the most is probably not a very helpful idea. Perhaps we can see which ones are linked to most frequently, but even there we have to tread lightly. We don't want people to start spamming their game collections just to get on some sort of list.

The suggestion has come up before to add a new daily feature, the "Collection of the Day." Like the above idea, it really needs some sort of feedback mechanism so that we can tell which collections are really the ones that people enjoy the most.

Meanwhile we always have a list of good game collections that appears in our "Example Searches" on the homepage. The bottom 6 links are all game collections picked by the Chessgames staff.

  chessgames.com: <Tabanus> <Phony Benoni> <Peligroso Patzer> All of that's fixed, thanks.

<whiteshark> Our programmers tried to fix that the other day, it should no longer contain duplicates and what's more, you should have 2008 and 2009 games. Please let us know if you still find problems.

Sep-20-09  ganstaman: <chessgames.com> I'm having a problem logging in to this site. Right now, I'm loggin in through firefox, which I otherwise never use. Normally, I'm on IE7, which has given me no problems before (at least not with this site...). Then, out of the blue, I'm getting the cookie monster error (for people other than cg.com -- that's what they call the error, it's not my wording).

I tried changing my browser to accept all cookies (normally I'm set to medium privacy, which accepts some cookies), but that didn't help me at all. I can log into and work with other sites with no problems, and I'm pretty sure that some of them work through cookies.

Very recently, I caught a virus and had to take care of that. However, I'm fairly certain that I did successfully use this site after that without having any problems, so I don't know if it's relevant.

So I wonder if others are having any problems, or if it must be something about my computer. If it is just a personal issue, then I have no problem taking this discussion to email if you'd prefer.

Thanks.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <chessgames.com> About the new "this game is type: CASUAL PATZER 3-MINUTE" feature - is there a list of all possible game types? I haven't found one anyplace, sorry if it's lurking somewhere.

It's rather hard to submit a correction when you don't know what a game should be corrected to. CLASSICAL/RAPID/BLITZ are rather obvious, as is CORRESPONDENCE (though does any game have that flag yet?) OTHER is odds, FR or similar, still simplish. EXHIBITION/SIMUL/BLINDFOLD tend to have a lot of overlap (and don't reveal anything about the time control, though if the main point of this feature is to leave some games out of the winning percentage count and the like and maybe allow <slomarko> to search by time control I guess this doesn't matter). What about Alekhine vs NN, 1915 - is that "ANALYSIS", "COMPOSITION" or what? Should there be a "BULLET" or "LIGHTNING" category for games of 2 minutes or less (a very small yet non-zero amount of which are deserving of a database spot? Take Schmaltz vs R Har-Zvi, 2001 for instance.) What about TEAM or CONSULTATION?

lol, I never saw that ad. The "Do not display sidebar advertisements" premium feature, work perfectly in firefox w/Adblock at least, couldn't see anything to the right.

<Natalia Pogonina: Haha, that ad has been a funny issue. However, <chessgames.com> is right: I don't mind being called a Russian beauty. The only difference is that I amn't trying to find a date online... :-)>

All the good ones are taken. :) Welcome, hopefully you will be commenting lots of Carlsen games at Nanjing, Pearl Spring.

<cg.com>, has it been decided which player that take preference for broadcast & comment in the first Pearl Spring game?

chessgames.com: As many of you have noticed we've added

Dutch Championship (2009) (good work Giri!)

and

Short-Efimenko Match (2009) (nailbiter in progress)

and

Kasparov-Karpov Rapid Match (2009) (games to be uploaded in the next 10 minutes, seriously)

and there are few more events to add soon. Thanks to everybody for helping us stay on top of this.

We also have the SPICE Cup (2009) but boy, it sure isn't easy to get PGN from them. If anybody has an easy link to a good clean supply of SPICE-PGN please let us know. Until then we employ a clumsy technique of extracting the PGN from Monroi, one game at a time.

<tpstar: Did User: First make it to 50 before their "X defeats Y in Z moves" schtick got the axe?> I happily was away from the site during that short hubbub and missed the entire thing. An admin explained what happened and wrote on that user's record "removed about a hundred spams." Maybe that was hyperbole, but it sounds like the 50 record is shattered.

<has it been decided which player that take preference for broadcast & comment in the first Pearl Spring game?> As you clearly realize, we have a protocol for picking which game to feature, but that protocol doesn't apply on the first game. For the first game we just try to show the game that we think most people want to see.

Given the lineup and our member-base, I think Carlsen's game is the obvious pick. There are a lot of Topalov fans at this site, but I think they are slightly outnumbered. Anyhow, over the course of the event, everybody will have their day. It's virtually impossible for somebody to not be featured at least for one or two of the rounds, even if they were in dead last place.

I am eagerly awaiting my game to be featured!!! (Yes, I'm holding my breath!!)

Sep-23-09  whiteshark: If I'm not mistaken, ALL <Mindsport 2008> games were 25 minutes RAPIDs and you have a flood of them in the database.
Sep-23-09  whiteshark: Thanks for correcting/updating the <ZIPFILE DIRECTORY>.

Just a small final note: 2 dates of modifying are unchanged in the main directory while the sub-directories have been updated. http://www.chessgames.com/zips_4K05...

You did that to test me, right? :D
