Stonehenge: I have come across several games which can be used for the Daily Puzzle. Do we have a submission page for this, like the Pun Submission page?

Domdaniel: <Ohio> I don't think there's a way of doing that, but I could be wrong. One - extreme - solution might be to clear out your 'favorites/friends' list, and put the people you don't want to read there instead. They could still post to your forum, but all their posts would be highlighted for easy avoidance.

You'd have to sacrifice your *real* friends, of course.

Dec-24-09  zanshin: <OCF> I see. That's a unique and difficult situation. I don't see a solution - maybe <CG> can.

Btw, that's pretty decent of you to allow people you prefer to ignore to still participate in your contest. Merry Christmas!

Dec-24-09  sneaky pete: <chessgames.com> I know I should use the spot an error link, but that's a bit complicated because both names used here are wrong. PLease merge Mulder Leen Dyjkstra and K Mulder Van Leens and give the man his correct, full name: (first names) Kornelis Dirk (family name) Mulder van Leens Dijkstra.

OhioChessFan: <You'd have to sacrifice your *real* friends, of course. >

I'd need to find a volcano first.

Dec-24-09  YouRang: <OhioChessFan>, <DomDaniel> One suggestion I made a while back was to expand on the "Favorites" feature so that you can have multiple lists of "favorites", each with a different color.

In fact, rather than call it "favorites", I should use a more generic name like "user groups", and allow each user to assign a name to each 'user group'.

With this approach, I could have:

- One user group that I call "Favorites" (maybe colored yellow). To this group, I add people that I particularly like.

- I would probably have another user group called "Myself" (maybe colored green) that has only my own user ID (so I can quickly spot my own posts).

- I could have another user group that I call "Ignorable" (colored gray). To this group, I add people whose posts I normally ignore or merely skim.

The color allows me to quickly assess each post, without actually hiding any posts. This avoids the negative impact of throwing off page numbers -- which is the main reason I don't use the ignore feature itself.

Each user group may have some additional attributes. For instance, for the "Ignorable" group, I might want to set an attribute that says "do not let these users post in my chessforum". (I might turn off that attribute when I'm running a prediction contest.)

Then, in each forum, instead of having a "Favorites Mode" which is "on" or "off", you could either select "all" (the default) or select one of your 'user groups'. Similarly, you could perform searches where the posts are limited to a specific user group.

I think it would be a nice enhancement, but I have no idea how difficult it would be.

al wazir: Along with many others (I think <Once> posted recently on the subject), I have objected to the artificiality of the puzzles. When a winning move exists in a real game played OTB, no klaxon sounds, no neon lights go on to announce that fact. On every turn each player has a decision to make. Sometimes there is a winning move waiting to be found; usually not. Often there isn't even a clear-cut best move.

In his forum <MostlyAverageJoe> has advocated an alternative that would get around the problem, at the cost of more work for the chessgames.com staff. I would like to suggest a simpler fix.

You continue to post a new puzzle every 24 hours, chosen exactly as in the past, but in addition post a second position where there is nothing special to be found (a control or "dummy"). At least 19 out of 20 positions chosen at random would satisfy this requirement. The puzzle-solver would first have to decide which of the two contains the winning move (or in the case of "spoilers," the saving move), and then find the move itself.

This would entail very little additional work on your part. With a few extra lines of code, kibitzers could be given the option of suppressing the dummy position entirely, implicitly supplying the answer to the first question and reverting to the present arrangement.

On the sticky subject of ignoring people who post to your chessforum <OhioChessFan> asked <If I have a person on ignore, and they posted on my forum, would their message be readable for everyone else?> Yes. YouRang explained the situation very well. The best strategy is probably to delete first, the ignore.

kingscrusher: Please can you put the PGNs of all the Hastings Congresses into the Chessgames.com database. For example there are key games of Kotov who wrote arguably the most controversial book ever "Think like a Grandmaster". But there aren't many games available around 1960 in Chessgames.com at the moment.

Here is my earlier post to the Kotov page:

Kotov won Hastings in 1962 according to Wiki. this concurs with the PGN of the event which can be obtained from:

http://www.saund.co.uk/britbase/has...

It would be good if Chessgames.com could get these PGN downloads and incorporate them, as there are many Kotov game examples here e.g.

Phony Benoni: <kingcrusher> I've wanted to see complete Hastings coverage as well, and have begun (with a lot of help from <suenteus po 147>) organizing the Hastings tournaments into collections and completing the files of games: see Game Collection: Hastings Christmas Congress (Tournament Index). Now that I know there's a demand, I'll really hop to it!

You can help by submitting missing games yourself at PGN Upload Utility.

Dec-29-09  Karpova: <chessgames.com>
Natalia Pogonina withdrew from the Russian Championship Superfinal (Women) (2009) and thereby lost her last two games (against Stepovaia and Zaiatz). Since there is no pgn available for those games that have never been played what will you do? With these two games missing the crosstable is hardly telling. Game 5 Kramnik vs Topalov, 2006 was included - are you planning to do the same here also? Maybe with a short annotation that Pogonina withdrew due to illness.
Dec-30-09  Karpova: This is the link to the homepage of the Reggio Emilia tournament currently taking place:

chessgames.com: <Karpova> We usually don't insert "dummy games" unless there is some specific interest about the game itself (Kramnik-Topalov, Fischer-Spassky, Short-Cheparinov, etc.) ... on the other hand we sometimes insert these dummy games just to straighten out a tournament leaderboard so that our score exactly equals the official record.

Pragmatically the three differences to the scoreboard, if dummy games were inserted, is that Elena Zaiatz would have 4.5 points on a technicality and not 3.5, and Tatiana Stepovaia-Dianchenko would have 3 instead of 2, and we'd display Natalia Pogonina as having 3.5/9 instead of 3.5/7.

On one hand, one may say that these missed games represent breaking chess news, and perhaps they may even turn into a "best wishes Natalia" type thread. It wouldn't be a horrible thing to have them. And the leaderboard would show everybody has having their full 9 games.

On the other hand, the argument can be made that displaying the scores without dummy games explains what happened in this tournament better than if we inserted them. Showing Natalia with 3.5/9 gives no indication that she dropped out of the tournament; it would look as if she played horribly. Showing 3.5/7 tells the real story: she was doing average, then had to leave.

So to answer your question, we could insert dummy games to straighten out the scoreboard but under these circumstances we're inclined to leave it be.

<Regarding what we call "mutated puzzles">

We read your post carefully (and others similar to it in the past). Our position is that we like the general premise, and are eager to incorporate something like it in upcoming features, but we doubt that we will change the puzzle-of-the-day format on the homepage.

To elaborate even more on the idea, there is an extension that applies itself very well to endgames. In fact it may be critical in the teaching of endgames effectively. For example, imagine drilling endgame theory by presenting a student with 16 simple king and pawn endings (Endgame Explorer: P vs K) say in a 4x4 grid. Given that it's White's move in each position, ask the student "Which positions are wins for White?"

This sort of ability is much different than what it takes to solve puzzles on our homepage. The student quickly learns rules of thumb like "the box of the pawn" and "king opposition" and then learns how the rules change a little bit when dealing with rook pawns, etc.

On the other hand, the old-fashioned puzzle has its own charm. It dates back to the very oldest written evidence of chess itself. We know these "What's the zinger?" style puzzles suffers from a fault in the sense that it's not exactly like playing a real chess game; but it's not supposed to be. Of course we don't want fans of Chessgames to go to tournaments and start to give up bishops on h7, rooks on g7, and queens everywhere, just because that's always the winning move on the homepage. We think most chess players understand the difference--and if not, they'll learn quick.

In short, we like the idea of "mutated puzzles", and hope to offer some sort of feature that incorporates that. It is a very powerful drilling method.

However, as far as changing the puzzle of the day itself, we doubt it's going to happen. I could enumerate a long list of arguments against it, but in a nutshell, it comes down to this: many people who see our homepage are seeing it for the very first time, and we can't afford to risk confusing them and/or scaring them away. Moreover, the homepage is a "starting point", the simplest puzzles we have to offer should be there. More advanced concepts are available once you scratch the surface, but not on the homepage.
