chessgames.com: <I have submitted this information many times before ...> We only see one submission, from November 8th, which the CG Librarian will attend to shortly.

Incidentally, all fact checking for that tournament can be done with Horace F. Cheshire's wonderful account of the event. We added a new photo of Amos Burn while we were at it.

Nov-09-11  benjinathan: I have an "it would be nice if" comment: it would be nice if the tournament games were organized in some sort of coherent fashion. For example in the current European Team championship, the first game on my list is Svidler v. Radjabov. The second game is I Papaioannou vs Vrachimis Boulos, 2011 etc.. It would be nice if they were laid out by teams/country in order in which the matches were played.

I know, it would be nice if you had all the time in the world too...

Nov-12-11  brankat: <Chessgames.com> Yesterday, Nov-11-2011 marked the tenth anniversary of the passing of British GM Tony Miles.

A minor correction is needed on his page:

<Years covered: 1904 to 2001>

Tony was born in 1955.

Thank You.

Nov-12-11  crawfb5: <Years covered: 1904 to 2001>

That's from this game S F James vs Miles, 1904 being misassigned to Miles.

Phony Benoni: S F James vs Miles, 1904 was played in Australia. Gino di Felice, in <Chess Results 1901-1920>, gives three contemporary Australian events with a player named <W J Miles>, who would likely be the actual player in the game.
Nov-12-11  achieve: Hi <chessgames>

You are probably aware that among friends certain landmarks reached are joyful occasions celebrated by a few congratulations "on reaching your first thousend posts, 5K, 10K" - this is all in good fun and no real big deal, but the recent event of my reaching 14,000 was preceded by "mysterious" deletions, at least three times (over, and back down below 14K), and last night to my bepuzzlement I was down to 13,993 - in one swoop overnight, while I was around 14,020+ earlier.

My request to you is: please look into this; by whom how when and where are these deletions performed?

As I said, I don't really care that much about postcounts and landmarks of that kind, that ship sailed sorta after the 10K, but it's mysterious and annoying enough to demand for some clarity on this issue, phenomenon, as friend <brankat> experienced the same recently, and we started wondering what could have been the cause, including <OhioChessFan> I might add.

Thanks.

Nov-13-11  brankat: <achieve>

As You may have noticed CG.com has, at the moment, 8,721 kibitz. Maybe they are just trying to catch up with You :-)

Nov-13-11  achieve: <chessgames> Another 30 posts have been deleted in the past two hours. It's 9:30 CET here.

Dates of birth and death, the country, are recorded. Together with 8 games in the database. But there is no first name there.

OhioChessFan: From the World game: <parmetd: we briefly discussed the game. I will see Var again tomorrow if anyone wants me to relate something to me.

He had a really good laugh about our silly made up 'draw etiquette' bs>

This person should be removed from the roster. I know you try hard to not come down too hard on breaches of etiquette, but this must stop, and now.

Nov-13-11  brankat: <Chessgames.com>

Further to ...<F.Alexander>. A kibitzer just posted a detailed account of Mr.F.Alexander at his Player's page

<..records that Frederick Forrest Lawrie Alexander was born on 13 November 1879,..> Perhaps, the Bio could now be updated. Thank You.

Domdaniel: Wasn't CG Librarian chessforum set up precisely to deal with matters such as incorrect names, misattributed games, and so on?

*This* page is for people who want to know the coordinates of the latest flame war.

Irony is intended.

Nov-13-11  brankat: I didn't know of The Librarian until a few minutes, when another kibitzer had me enlightened :-)

  chessgames.com: Regarding vanishing post counts:

We appreciate your concern. A quick check into our logfiles indicates that a single user with a very large chessforum has been on a deleting spree. We are not 100% positive but it seems as if this individual's actions could have accounted for all of the missing posts.

We will investigate the matter further but we are happy to learn that--at least superficially--there is no indication of hacking or other foul play.

Nov-14-11  achieve: Thanks <chessgames> - indeed I hope, and frankly expect, that there is no intention here of foul play or hacking, but not kidding over a hundred of my posts have been deleted, and <frogbert> reports a similar, bit smaller sized (80), number, which has me wondering whether this can be a chessforum owner, as frogbert and I only posted this much at the Carlsen page; plus a few personal forums of the "Norwegian contingent" come to mind as possible (of few) candidates...

But you seem to have a good view on it - while I am viewing forward to another meet with 13,000 - from the "other side"... ;)

Nov-14-11  brankat: That would be more like 14,000 :-)
Nov-14-11  LIFE Master AJ: The page of: Morphy vs Duke Karl / Count Isouard, 1858, is in need of another round of "cleansing," it would seem.
Nov-14-11  TheFocus: Once again <AJ> runs crying to the Admins.

<AJ> Don't you think the posts where you insult members should be deleted also?

Look in the mirror, hypocrite.

Nov-14-11  TheFocus: <LIFE Crybaby>.
Nov-14-11  DrMAL: AMEN to <TheFocus> one of many users on this site who is MUCH BETTER AT CHESS THAN AJ GOLDSBY and who is SICK OF ALL THE ENDLESS TRASH FROM AJ GOLDBY, sole cause of almost all animosity on CG site! Like others on that page (this time, it goes on endlessly with AJ Goldsby) I mirror their plea:

PLEASE ERASE POSTS AND BAN AJ GOLDSBY FROM THIS SITE!

Phony Benoni: I guess this is a bug, but please don't fix it.

Periodically, I download the chessgames.com database by going through the ECO codes. (Inefficient, but I have my reasons for not using the zip files.)

If any ECO section (or combination of sections) has more than 3000 games, the <PGN Download> button does not appear. To download the section, you have to split the file up, which I usually do by date.

For instance, ECO code <A10> had 3267 games last time I looked. So I redid the search, qualifying by "no later than" 2008, and got under 3000 games.

When I downloaded, the download file contained all 3267 games from the A10 section.

This works for persons too. Anatoli Karpov has 3471 games. Qualifying by "no later than 2002" gives 2992 games. When that file is downloaded, all of Karpov's 3471 show up.

I'm not sure of the limits of this; for instance, it doesn't seem to work with Korchnoi's 4000+ games. But it is quite useful for my purposes.

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> I think you're onto somethin'!! I tried it with A10, but with the second criteria as: Result draw

I only got the 1093, not the whole batch. =(

Did not yet try to change other search qualifiers, maybe it works for year, but not result? Have to try player too? We can have whole lot of fun testing various combinations.

(Hey, you want a job as software test engineer? =)
