Someone mentioned at Yuri Averbakh that it was unusual that Karpov and Kasparov were not mentioned, which I imagine could be because the quote is from before they were champions. Is there a reason we never get a year or a source on the QOTDs? |

If I decide to edit something I have just posted, I <delete> the post, then <copy> the post from the delete box using <ctrl-C>, re-post to the <kibitz> box and edit any typos. However, if the original post includes a <fen diagram>, I also have to recreate the diagram (there are a variety of ways to do this). Suggestion: Have the <fen-string> appear in the <delete box> instead of having the <fen-diagram> appear. It would work like the box for header information in <preferences>. If I post a diagram in my header and go back to edit my header, the <fen-string> appears instead of the <fen-diagram>. |

 | | Annie K.: Hmm... links too, then. It's a bother, having to recreate them wherever a copy-paste only gets a cut-off part. IOW, a source to copy the original post's full text (rather than activated site codes) from, would be quite useful. :) |

 | | OhioChessFan: <hms123: However, if the original post includes a <fen diagram>, I also have to recreate the diagram (there are a variety of ways to do this). > My variety is to use the back arrow a couple times from the delete notification and copy from my post. FWIW, I know from experience it works for like 15 back clicks if I've gone on to other pages. I do like your idea though. |
|
| Feb-20-12 | | hms123: <OCF> I have tried that successfully, but sometimes that trick doesn't work for me. Probably I am going forward instead of back or something else gets in the way. |

| Feb-20-12 | | hms123: <Annie> Thanks for the reminder about links. I meant to include them as well. I would delete and re-post, but that would make a hash of things. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Suddenly today your games gave me the "requires plug in" message even though I already have Java and there's never been any problem. I had to reinstall java to play through games here again. So now it works again, but for how long? What's up with that?
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and Google Chrome. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Jess> I blame Java. It's been a bit hysterical lately. I've rejected its offer to supply so-called upgrades several times, and then it instals them anyway when I'm not looking. |

 | | chessgames.com: Addressing some comments in no particular order:
<The 10-year 10,000 post Hall of Fame> The biggest reservation about this idea is the well known phenomenon in which players spam the forums with vacuous one-liners in an attempt to ratchet their post count higher. We've always been very wary of people doing that and kept the ChessGames.com Statistics Page page to a bare minimum to discourage that kind of behavior. And yet, in spite of our efforts, that kind of behavior is still common. On the other hand, if we had a quasi-official pronouncement of the members who deserve special recognition, I'm sure most people would enjoy it. Meanwhile, the posters with quick trigger-fingers would see that there's no software algorithm that they can trick. Perhaps a special section in the upcoming newsletter? <jessicafischerqueen: Suddenly today your games gave me the "requires plug in" message even though I already have Java and there's never been any problem.> You're the first person to report this so it could be some quirk with your particular system, e.g. Java thinks that it's no longer installed for some reason. Or it could be Java's way of coercing everybody to get the latest upgrade. Just going along with whatever it says isn't the worst advice. Keep us posted, as you're probably not alone in this. <hms123> About copying/pasting messages with FEN links. This kind of thing has always been a problem, with URLs and what not. With player biographies we have a very nice solution, as the bio editors are aware: there are two versions of the bio, the one that you see behind the scenes when you want to make an edit, and the one that is turned into nice HTML and presented to the public. We call these unprocessed biography the "raw bio". So what you really need is to have access to the "raw comment." Problem: we don't store the raw-comments. Once a message gets posted the processed HTML goes into the database and the raw-comment is discarded, partially because of space concerns but also because there's no current function to read or edit the raw-comments anyhow. In short, what your asking for could be accommodated but it would require a major revision to our method of posting. Sorry. <Stonehenge> We just processed some games. Yours and Benzols combined pushed our game count up to the next milestone. Thanks. |

| Feb-22-12 | | Benzol: <chessgames> <Yours and Benzols combined pushed our game count up to the next milestone.> <chessgames> Can you tell what happened to the Watzl - Viaud game from the 1st World Correspondence Chess Ch. Was it rejected for some reason? |

 | | chessgames.com: Oh, that game, yes it was rejected because it didn't end in a normal way: [Event "1st World Correspondence Chess Ch"]

Be3 e5 15. Nxc6 bxc6 16. c4 Be6 17. Rac1 Rd8 18. b3 Qb7 19. f4 * {At this point Viaud withdrew from the tournament.} By designating it as "*" and not "1-0" I am assuming that for purposes of scoring the tournament, Watzl did not gain a point? If the game was adjudicated or forfeited, we should use one of the normal three results. But if it's true that the game was neither adjudicated nor forfeited, then I can sneak it into the database with special admin override. |
|
Feb-22-12
 | | chessgames.com: Probably not related to JFQs situation, but worth mentioning, is that lately Chrome added this security layer that involves asking the user permission to run "suspicious Java applets", and a chess viewer is certainly unusual enough to warrant suspicion. So people have been telling Chrome to give Chessgames special permission to run its PGN viewer. There's a discussion about Chrome and Java here: http://www.java.com/en/download/faq... |
|
| Feb-22-12 | | Benzol: <But if it's true that the game was neither adjudicated nor forfeited, then I can sneak it into the database with special admin override.> <chessgames> Viaud withdrew from the tournament and all his games were cancelled so the admin override is probably the best way to go. The rest of his games from the event are already in the database. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: <Gentlemen> thanks for that link and the JAVA info- I'm sure you are right about this. Anyways so far so good, no recurrence of the problem.
On more appropriate pages I some time ago mentioned another problem that I think should be addressed: dead or suspect links in the intros to your <History of the World Chess Championship> pages. This is a flagship feature of your website and I think it should be upgraded where appropriate. In particular, you rely much too heavily on <Graham Cree's> website. 1. He is no longer running the site- if you click on your hyperlinks you get either a GIGANTIC AOL ONLINE advertisement or the creaky WAYBACK MACHINE. 2. (more importantly) Many of Mr. Cree's historical anecdotes are suspect, some flatly incorrect, and almost all of them are unsourced. Why not give your most trusted member biographers power to edit these pages, not just the player bios? They have access to thousands of actual chess history and tournament books, and access to our wider membership who also have tons of these actual books. Real books with actual sources so at least we can know where the information came from, and can better evaluate historical claims in your intros to this important feature-History of the World Chess Championship At any rate, thank you again. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: While I'm on the topic-
When you finally do convert the Historical Tournament Games pages to Official CG.com Pages- with crosstable, games listed and kibbutzing feature (a great idea btw)- I sincerely hope you don't go with this kind of introduction: Botvinnik-Smyslov World Championship Match (1954)
as opposed to the much, much more substantial kind of introductions written by the actual games collection creators, such as this one, for example- Game Collection: 1940 US Championship The second is much preferable to the first, for obvious reasons. I sincerely hope you don't "throw the detailed accurate historical intros out with the bath water" when you make this switch over. Just the thought of that possibility is giving me hives. |
