chessgames.com: <optimal play> asks "Is it possible to make the Tournament Index chronologically correct?" A good point.

As things stand, the Tournament table has a field called simply "year". To fix the problem is just a matter of straightforward programming work: we have to turn the year field into a full YYYY-MM-DD date and then set the dates what they are supposed to be, whenever possible.

The only reason why it doesn't work that way right now is that in the past, "year" was sufficient for our purposes. Now that we have the Tournament Index we need finer granularity.

Thanks for pointing that out.

chessgames.com: Sure, we'll get that up ASAP. Still can't believe they switched to rapid format.
Feb-14-13  twinlark: It's a sad day that Aeroflot considers the classical format to be "boring, miserable and useless".

Cricket went through something like this when the one day format of the game was introduced. It proved to be a great hit, but did not destroy the slower version of the game, even if it did wreak havoc with the technique of many players who couldn't bring their crash and bash techniques to the much more rigorous but slower form of the game.

What eventually happened was that although many players could play both forms of the game, more players have started specialising in one form or the other.

Something similar will probably happen with chess, with some specialising in one form of the game or the other.

Nothing will ever change that the best quality chess (or cricket!) will almost always be the slow form of the game.

On another note, your system has logged something "terribly wrong" in one of my corrections of the Adams bio. This happened as I forgot to log out of my new non-authorised (for bios) userid before making corrections in the previously opened tab at the Adams page.

Feb-15-13  SugarDom: Oh c'mon. I checked the accuracy of the rapids games of the top players and it's better than the long games of the average GM.

I think what they can do is change the time control though from Fischer time to moves/ per minutes so that the endgame don't suffer.

Feb-15-13  twinlark: You jest, surely. There have been some awfully obvious mistakes in the rapids.

Feb-16-13  DcGentle: Dear <chessgames.com>,

Maybe we can gain a broader audience for the latest World Team game of last year, because it was praised as a masterpiece already.

Some team members deny this, but there is no striking win in chess without at least one mistake of the opponent, and if one side constantly finds the best moves in the game, it's a masterpiece mo matter what.

The other fact is, that the World Team played a move that was <new> on grandmaster level, changing the view of a whole variant of the Caro-Kann.

Now I have a petition:

Here (http://www.filedropper.com/instruct...) you can download (click on "Download this file") the PDF-version of an article that was already published by me on the Kititzer Corner pages of the game. It's my gift to you, I don't claim ownership.

I would be pleased if this article could be sent (by e-mail) to some relevant chess publishers (online or print), just to elicit interest or more.

I would do it myself, but I lack the contacts, and maybe you would be more successful.

Kind regards and thanks in advance,
<DC>

chessgames.com: <DcGentle> Thank you very much for that document.

We actually may have a green-light to prepare an article for Chess Life. The topic would probably be the two Akobian games, both of which are very interesting in their own way.

Feb-16-13  DcGentle: <chessgames.com> Thanks, I hope it can support a report on the game. This one can be underestimated very easily, because the real background is not visible, as it is often the case in chess.

  kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com

How do "notable games" work ?!

For example, I wonder if any player interviews (e.g. magazines / videos) where they mention games, should somehow be prioritised for that player's notable game section or at least made into "candidates" for notable games for discussion somewhere for later promotion to the notable games section.

For example - late the other night I was reading an old Kingpin chess magazine, and found an interesting annotation around an early Ward vs Summerscale encounter - very dramatic and important for the now GM Summerscale's career I think.

Ward, Chris G - Summerscale, Aaron 0-1
D45 BCF-ch 79th
1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. e3 e6 5. Nf3 Nbd7 6. Qc2 Be7 7. b3 O-O 8. Bd3 dxc4 9. bxc4 c5 10. O-O cxd4 11. exd4 b6 12. Ne5 Bb7 13. Re1 Re8 14. Re3 Nf8 15. Ne2 N6d7 16. Rh3 Ng6 17. Bxg6 hxg6 18. Rh8+ Kxh8 19. Nxf7+ Kh7 20. Nxd8 Raxd8 21. Nf4 Nf8 22. Bb2 Bg5 23. Nh3 Bf6 24. Rd1 Rd7 25. Ba3 Bxd4 26. Qa4 Rdd8 27. Qxa7 Rd7 28. Qa4 Ra8 29. Qb3 Bc6 30. Qg3 e5 31. Bxf8 Rxf8 32. Kh1 Bxf2 33. Qb3 Be3 34. Re1 Rd2 35. Qxe3 Rxg2 36. Qe4 Bxe4 37. Rxe4 Rxa2 38. Rxe5 Rf1+ 39. Ng1 Rff2 0-1

He lost his queen but managed to come back against his more experienced IM opponent at that time.

My questions really surround "notable games" - how can games where a player themselves are interviewed somewhere and mention a game be somehow made into "candidates" for notable games?! Of course entry into the database is also an important first step too.

I wonder maybe an approach could be for a focus on GM interviews, and finding such key games, and uploading them to the site if they are not here, and somehow also making them "candidates" at the same time. So "Upload and make Candidate notable game" as one process. I don't know who on Chessgames.com has lots of magazines etc but it might add some really interesting notable games to several GM pages.

Cheers, K

kingscrusher: Also some people may have contact with GMs or IMs on Facebook - I have for example - and it might be possible to simply ask them what they think their immortal or at least "notable games" are.

I wonder if maybe it might be a different section to Notable games - what those GMs themselves considered to be "notable". There could be external factors to the game or what was at stake as opposed to the actual technical game content for example - so it would be difficult for members of Chessgames.com to sometimes understand why such a game was important or notable.

chessgames.com: Hi Kingscrusher. You need to see Chessgames Help under <What are notable games?>

In short, we just use a count of the number of game collections that the games are in. It works on the premise that the more collections a game is in, the more notable it must be. It's not a flawless premise, but at least for the big players it tends to work fairly well.

chessgames.com: I could add: if a GM thinks that one of their games is very notable, and we had that information, we'd be delighted to make it GOTD and then it would (at least, in principle) get an appreciable boost in notability.

Diademas: <<chessgames.com> It works on the premise that the more collections a game is in, the more noteworthy it must be. It's not a flawless premise but at least for the big players it tends to work fairly well.> I dissagree.

If you look at Carlsen, he has not played a noteworthy game since he was 17. Somehow games he played as a 12 year old against unknown Norwegian B-players are more noteworthy than for instance his masterpieces against Karjakin and Harekrishna at Tata this year. The noteworthy games for retired or old players seems to be all right, but for active, and especially upcomming players, it does not work very well. I have noe idea how it could be done better though.

chessgames.com: That's true--with players who are young and gaining momentum the earlier games have a distinct advantage simply because they've been around longer, so more people have had time to collect them.

With players like Steinitz or Fischer or Kasparov, the results are uncannily accurate, especially for a top five list.

Maybe the solution is to use a weighted average so that newer games are given more notability, at least for certain players. Thanks for sharing your observations.

Can you eventually get around to editing the blurbs about the various games and write about them in the past tense? Games that ended years ago referenced in future tense is grating to the eyes.
