 | | chessgames.com: <FSR: As <whiteshark> pointed out some time ago, Wikimedia Commons has a picture of Nazi Paikidze.> Cool, thanks. <SwitchingQuylthulg> <<cg> Another Bookie problem alert...> Thanks, we are on it. The bookie assumed that http://www.chess-results.com/tnr726... is either local-time or GMT, but apparently neither. <OhioChessFan> I'm sorry, I thought we fixed that. Speaking of Battle of the Brains, we're due for BOB4 to start soon. <notyetagm: Can we please have a forum for the <2013 ICELAND-CHINA RAPID MATCH>??> Sure, sounds like fun. |

 | | OhioChessFan: I know the buyer should beware, but you might consider unlinking a couple of these outside the site engines that are Java based. Or at least putting a warning message referencing the current Java problems. Little ChessPartner |

| Feb-26-13 | | twinlark: Hi <ceegee>. Here's a nice pic of Wang Jue from http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/F.... If you could put it on her player page that would be really cool. |

| Feb-28-13 | | twinlark: Hi <ceegee>
Any chance of setting up a page for the Capelle-la-Grande International? It has about 70 GMs competing as well as a few hundred other assorted masters and wannabes. http://www.cappelle-chess.fr/en2/de... |

 | | FSR: How does one find a player whose name has an apostrope in it? I was trying to find James O'Brien, who was the most dominant player in the history of the USCF's Absolute (Correspondence) Championship. He's not in the Player Directory, and searches for "O'Brien" and "Obrien" come up empty. Perhaps there are no games of his in the database (I don't know), but this sort of thing seems to be a problem for anyone with an apostrophe in his/her name. For example, George E O'Toole is listed in the Player Directory, but searches for "O'Toole" and "OToole" and "Otoole" come up blank. |

 | | chessgames.com: <FSR> That's a good question. Honestly I thought it worked, not necessarily by design but just because we tested it and Erwin L'ami came up fine. Now I see that it doesn't work for your O'Brien nor for L'ami. Maybe something changed one year when we upgraded the database? So I'm sorry we don't have a good answer for you right now, although here's his page to tide you over: James O'Brien. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Stonehenge> Thanks for pointing that out. We were in contact with that artist, Eric Petit, years ago. He was happy to let us use his work but apparently his site is defunct. We'll see if we can contact him again for updated info. |

 | | Annie K.: Hmm... the main site - http://www.notzai.com - seems to work, in a fashion; it redirects to a chess-related ebay page. And here's the last known capture of an actual site page that the original link redirected the WayBack spider to: http://web.archive.org/web/20071109... - and a translation to English (http://translate.google.com/transla...) seems to hold a clue to what happened. Contacting the artist is still a good idea, I just felt like doing a little detective work! ;) |

 | | chessgames.com: Now that the smoke has somewhat settled with these Java security panics we've put together a Chess Viewer Help Page which will hopefully offer useful info to the many users who are confused over the situation. |

| Mar-04-13 | | Alien Math: Latest Java Security Update~
Oracle Issues Emergency Java Update
Java 7 Update 17 and Java 6 Update 43 Updates should be available via the Java Control Panel (see screenshot above) or from Java.com. ~ http://krebsonsecurity.com/2013/03/... Mac OS X 10.6 users who have Java should check Software Update for any available updates. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and 10.8 (Mountain Lion) users can grab the updated version of Java from Java.com. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most end users who have Java on their systems probably don’t need it and can safely remove it (this advice does not scale for users of corporate systems, which may have specific applications that rely on Java). If you do need it, unplug it from the browser unless and until you need it. It is now possible to disable Java content in web browsers through the Java control panel applet. Alternatively, consider a dual-browser approach, unplugging Java from the browser you use for everyday surfing, and leaving it plugged in to a second browser that you only use for sites that require Java. |

| Mar-05-13 | | DcGentle: I have got a technical question regarding posting a FEN on the Kibitzer's pages. Posting a FEN, the picture of the respective position is shown, which is fine in most cases. BUT: If you want to post a PGN-file where the header includes a FEN (because it's not starting with the initial position), then you'll also see a picture, although you'd prefer the normal FEN string in this situation. Now it would be handy if the writer of the posting had the option of indicating to the system that in this special case the FEN should not be converted into a board picture but just taken as it is, namely a pure string. I don't know, whether this is possible already, if not, I'd suggest preserving the FEN string when it's surrounded by quotation marks (" "). Can someone help me with this?
(Currently I insert a blank into the FEN string, but this is only a makeshift solution, because the blank has to be removed again) |
|
Mar-05-13
 | | WannaBe: Theoretically, you can just remove that (offending) line in the PGN file, and post the position/FEN below the moves. |
|
| Mar-05-13 | | DcGentle: <WannaBe>: Hi there, *hmmm* Well, the FEN line belongs to the header of the PGN-text, so it has to be there, but as string, a picture won't do it. If I remove the FEN line from the header, any PGN viewers or chess programs won't work with this defective PGN-text. Sorry. |
|
| Mar-05-13 | | DcGentle: While we are at it, there are other problems with PGN-texts as well, this concerns the annotations of PGN-texts. These are surrounded by curly brackets
like these { } which are normally invisible in postings, because they are used to start and stop figurine notation. I could only make them visible by typing them twice. I had hoped to invalidate their effect by this as well, but to no avail. Pictorial representations of pieces make no sense within PGN-annotations, because these are supposed to be plain text. So what would be fine to have some indicator within postings, like [PGN]
<------------ pgn-text here
[/PGN]
But I guess this would not happen any time soon. |
