 | | chessgames.com: Mark, our bandwidth gets maxed when we reach about 3000 simultaneous users, which is what we have now. The only advice I can give is that frantically pressing reload will make the problem worse and not better. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Ukrainian Championship> We actually have the games (including the women section), we just need to put it on the homepage now. |
|
| Nov-17-14 | | MarkFinan: Okay, and thanks for answering. But I only keep pressing reload "frantically" when I know there's been a move and I just get a white screen. It works better than pressing it once and then waiting 15 seconds for a blank screen. |

Game starts Monday, 7:00am USA/Eastern - it is now 5:46am |

| Nov-19-14 | | MarkFinan: <<SugarDom: I'm surprised that your bandwith is so low. It shouldn't cost that much>> I'm not sure what you mean by that sugardom. Do you mean it's my network? |
|
| Nov-19-14 | | SugarDom: No. I was talking to CG. |
|
| Nov-21-14 | | morfishine: <CG> Have you considered re-tooling the GOTD so the games presented are representative, from a quality standpoint, of being called "Game of the Day"? Open a separate segment of this site for "Fun puns" and have the Game of the Day become a location for exciting, high quality games. Admittedly, a small percentage of the games presented as 'GOTD' are high quality; but as it is now, for the most part, your GOTD is a harbor for low quality games that make fun of somebody's name thru use of infantile word play. Kinda pathetic if you asked me |
|
Nov-21-14
 | | chessgames.com: <morfishine> Yes, we've had suggestions like that for years. The first thing to understand is that it's not so much "quality" but rather "interesting" which we're really shooting for. That's why you'll see short games, or a GM clobbering an amateur, absurd openings, and things like that. In any case, I disagree with the characterization that only "a small percentage of the games presented" are of a high quality. A quite high percentage of them are high quality by most people's definition of the word. When we have a pun like <How the Wes was Won> we go out and find a really good game in which Wesley So loses that's never been GOTD before. I think we found a very good one. When we did <The Beli of the Beast> it was far more restrictive: it had to specifically be a Beliavsky-Kasparov game. Happily there are about 30 to pick from and more than one of them are fabulous. I know that not every day's game will be to everybody's taste, but we're not just grabbing games at random. Did we really make such horrible selections that you'd call those games "low quality"? Game of the Day Archive |
|
| Nov-21-14 | | morfishine: <CG> Thanks for the reply, your basis of "interesting" vs quality games explains a lot. IMHO, the term itself "Game of the Day", no matter the source, carries a connotation of quality. Here at <CG>, regarding the GOTD, too often this connotation is missing having been subordinated to the desire to post silly word-play or non-puns. Whats the point, the actual game? or to display some nonsensical play on words? Ever week, there are plenty of GM level games played all around the World that would make great Games of the Day |
|
| Nov-21-14 | | zanzibar: Doing my collection for <Biel izt 1993> I came across this error message for the first time: <ERROR: You are limited to 450 games per collection.> Any possibility that <CG> can relax this restriction? (<Biel izt 1993> has 481 games, including 14 stubs. I'm not sure what the level should be, let's say 1 or 2k maybe?) |
|
| Nov-22-14 | | Benzol: <chessgames> Regarding the 450 game limit what was the final ruling about the two collections that made up the New York 1889 tournament? Game Collection: New York 1889 Game Collection: New York 1889, Part II Oh, I've just realized that the two collections total 429 games. Hopefully <suenteus po 147> will now complete the work he started earlier. |

 | | chessgames.com: I think 1000 is overdoing it without a software upgrade. (The editing page surely has already become unfriendly without pagination.) Let's just take it one step at a time—500 for now. Let me know when you run into need for a bigger one. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Whats the point, the actual game? or to display some nonsensical play on words?>
Of course the game is the point. We wouldn't feature mediocre filled blitz game between 1800 players no matter how hilarious of a pun we have. I know a lot of games appear to be picked "just for the pun" but the game should have some merit as well. I can't say we're entirely innocent of that temptation, and some real lemons have slipped through the cracks, but it's to be avoided. <[Every] week, there are plenty of GM level games played all around the World that would make great Games of the Day> Occasionally we feature a recently played game, but for the most part the games that are "in the news" are to be found in <Recent Kibitzing> and also on the homepage <Hot Games> feature. Right now you'll find yesterday's Anand vs Carlsen, 2014 at the top of Hot Games, as you'd expect. No matter what we have as GOTD, the top of Hot Games is truly the game of the day. It would be superfluous for us to make it GOTD. |

| Nov-22-14 | | DPLeo: Hello <chessgames.com>, just wanted to let you know that GM Arkadij Naiditsch did not make a move yesterday. |
|
| Nov-22-14 | | zanzibar: Hi <chessgames>, I thought you'd just give me 500. Wonder how 450 ever came about (it not being a nice round D-note). First of all, thanks for bumping the limit up, now I can finish off <Biel izt 1993>. This highlights one of the problems with overloading collections with normalization. I would say a collection should really be different than a tournament. A tournament should be an Event/Site/Year combination in the PGN that users should be to search on. A collection would then be games of note, either thematically or by player (or even by tournament). Users wouldn't pick them just to group them for purposes of normalization, but for the content of the games inside. Using <MillBase> (a descendant of the Dutch Rebelbase normalized for use with SCID), I find all of the following tournaments have more than 500 games: < Date Players Games Elo Site: Event Winner 1 2013.11.08 187 679 2562 Warsaw POL: 19. | Nov-22-14 | | zanzibar: By the way, I just noticed that these super-sized tournaments are a recent phenomena, starting from around 2008. |
|
| Nov-22-14 | | zanzibar: Another idle-moment suggestion...
To put the number of games at the top and bottom of the list of games in a collection - for both editing and viewing. At present the number of games only shows up when viewing all user game collections: zanzibar's Game Collections or at the bottom of a game collection list when editing: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... But nowhere for outside users to see when viewing it: Game Collection: Biel Interzonal 1993 (FIDE) (I wanted to see how many games were missing from the 481 total - 14 stub = 467 games. Only two more games to go!) |

 | | chessgames.com: <But nowhere for outside users to see when viewing it> That's a good point. I just fixed that. |

 | | chessgames.com: ♔ ANNOUNCEMENT ♔
<Re: the Upcoming Holiday Present Hunt> We've decided that we will welcome puzzle suggestions from members for the annual Chessgames Present Hunt Clues Page. A few notes:
1. It's OK if you submit a puzzle and also play in the contest. However, obviously, you cannot solve your own puzzle. In fact, you are strictly forbidden to give the slightest hint while the puzzle is online; even tiny things like "You're on the wrong track" or "Google won't help you" are hints. 2. We trust that that nobody will cheat and whisper the answer to a friend. But just to be on the safe side, we're going to avoid giving out the "special prizes" to user-submitted puzzles. 3. To submit puzzles you should be familiar with the contest and have a feel for the diverse nature of clues we give. If you haven't been on this site for a year, you should review the many years of the contest from our Chessgames Present Hunt Clues Page. 4. The puzzles must be solvable, preferably without "hints". We want puzzles that are hard, but not "hard for the wrong reasons." We'd rather have an easy puzzle that's cracked in 5 minutes than a really obscure one that lasts for more than a day. The sweet spot is a puzzle that lasts 2-6 hours, but experience has shown this is very difficult to achieve. 5. Some puzzles that seem almost impossible are easily solvable simply by pasting their contents into Google and studying the results. It's hard to avoid this, but we try to. Before suggesting a puzzle run it through that test and see if Google cracks it instantly. 6. We don't like puzzles that easy to solve only when you have a premium membership. For example, if the Opening Explorer is employed in finding the solution it should involve the first few moves so that non-premium members can get at the answer. 7. If your puzzle needs some graphical representation, that's no problem, just describe what you need and we'll design it from there. 8. Please don't be upset if we don't use your suggestion. 9. Send suggestions to chess@chessgames.com. We will let you know if your idea is used so you can be on the lookout for it. |

 | | Penguincw: Just a random question that came to my head: what if I submit a puzzle, and someone submits a better puzzle with the same answer, and that game ends up being used? Can I claim the prize upon that game? |
|
Nov-23-14
 | | chessgames.com: <GOTD has not changed for today.> Oops! Thanks Phony. <Penguincw> I don't know, that sounds like a pretty crazy coincidence. I guess it might happen if two people think of a clue that solves to the first 7 digits of pi, or something like that. (That would take you to C Lutz vs J Tihonov, 2006.) I guess we'll cross that bridge if we come to it. |
|
Nov-23-14
 | | MissScarlett: Can you explain how often you update the site with regard to submitted games and corrections? I appreciate that you cannot simply wave through all submissions without review, but it's frustrating not knowing when, or if, one's contributions will appear. |
|
| Nov-23-14 | | Caissanist: My apologies if this has been mentioned before, but isn't User: Geordi is a spambot, or perhaps a spam person? |
