 | | chessgames.com: The new Similar Games feature is now live.
For example here's one from today's feature game: Games Like Carlsen vs Topalov, 2015 I like Annie K's idea of linking the games directly to the relevant move numbers, but that will take a little re-engineering. If you have any other ideas to improve this page, or find a bug, let me know. It still needs to be tested on some games with enormously long theoretical variations that go over the 20-move Opening Explorer limit. My guess is that it will work but leave you hanging before the actual novelty is played. It might even misreport the novelty. |
|
Aug-24-15
 | | chessgames.com: Here's a test of Similar Games with one that walks down a very well trodden opening variation: Games Like Adams vs J Werle, 2008. As suspected, it reports the 20th move as the novelty whether it actually is or not. There's not much I can do to fix that other than extending the depth of the entire Opening Explorer, so for now I put the disclaimer "(or after)" next to the novelty when the move number is 20. |
|
| Aug-24-15 | | gauer: Opening Explorer is the link of a particular depth of ply to an opening explorer position, but would it be useful to use that style as well in the "find similar" line-depth bar as well (and/or maybe the link to the number of games' node-link below in brackets behind each ply-depth in that bar - until one gets to the games lists afterwards)?! Also, when using (either version of) "find similar", does anyone else seem to think that displaying the ply-depth lines to the position in reverse depth order, and/or the date lists of the game list in reverse chronological order? It would seem that if a player is looking up an improvement idea to a recent novelty, it might be okay to display the year-2000 games before the 1800-era games. Not sure if it's possible, or whether an optional switch on Chessgames Preferences Page (config options) might assist the premium user's enjoyment of the feature. |

| Aug-24-15 | | zanzibar: <gauer> Have you ever used the Tree window feature of SCID? |
|
| Aug-24-15 | | zanzibar: <Chessgames> I know that <Search Kibitzing> is a feature reserved for premium members. Still, I'm curious...
In the kibitzing for this game:
Karpov vs Topalov, 1994 (kibitz #128) I scanned the 6 pages looking for Lemos. It got me wondering.... The usual kibitzing search does a global search, I think, by default. Is there a quick search feature to just scan the current (and specific) forum for a text occurrence? |
|
| Aug-24-15 | | zanzibar: I wonder if games could have a section at the top with links to youtube video's and maybe blog pages with game analysis? Of course, this opens a political/editorial can of worms, but it would be nice to migrate some of the more constructive info from the forum posts up to the top for easier access. |

 | | chessgames.com: <The usual kibitzing search does a global search, I think, by default. Is there a quick search feature to just scan the current (and specific) forum for a text occurrence?> No, but there should be. It could be as easy as a search bar at the bottom of the kibitzing. It might read, "Search this thread: ________" <I wonder if games could have a section at the top with links to youtube video's and maybe blog pages with game analysis?> Are you familiar with the "stickies" that we use during GM-vs-world games, and Team-vs-Team games? It's sort of a wiki that anybody can edit that contains links and brief descriptions. We've had a plan for a long time to make something like that for every single page. So if there is (say) a video of a Carlsen interview it could be "pinned" to the stickies on the Carlsen page. It even could be sorted into categories: news articles, photographs, videos, other. |

| Aug-25-15 | | kellmano: Might I suggest you offer an alternative viewer that doesn't use java. Some time ago it stopped working on my laptop and <wannabe> tried to help me but despite this I couldn't get it to work, even going through control panel and trying to allow things. I gave up. Then, I bought a new laptop and it worked for a bit, then required an update and I can't get it to work again despite spending half an hour trying, following all the troubleshooting instructions. Neither does java work on my computer at work, but there I don't even have the permissions to use the troubleshoot options. I guess it has some value, but presumably lots of people are in my position and will just go elsewhere to watch and review games. I think you'll find there are quite a lot of people who are computer users, but not really that literate on operating systems and processes. I'm not a total ignoramus myself and I quite often help other people with computer problems, but java is incredibly user unfriendly. I've tried it in chrome and explorer, removed old versions and so on, but still can't get it to operate on this site. I think it must affect your traffic. As I say, I'm not any good with computers, but there are certainly a lot of people worse than me who will be visiting other sites instead of yours. |

 | | chessgames.com: <kellmano: Might I suggest you offer an alternative viewer that doesn't use java.> That's pgn4web. We made the Java Help Page to both explain how to get Java working, but also to allow you to give up and just switch to pgn4web. |
|
| Aug-26-15 | | kellmano: <chessgames> Ah right that solves the problem, thanks. I just spent all my time trying to install java and didn't notice the pgn4web option. |

| Aug-26-15 | | MarkFinan: Every single time I go to place a bet at the bookies it says "error. Choose an amount of chess bucks to enter!". Every. Single. Day. And that's if I can even login! I've mentioned this at the bookies along with another issue and nothing's been done and nothing's changed. It's really starting to annoy me now. |
