| | chessgames.com: <When doing a search for the names 'van' and 'von', I get the message <Sorry, we have no names that exactly match '' in our database.>> About that, it's understood why it happens but I'm not sure if there is a good argument for doing anything to change it. It's there as an efficiency concern; for the same reason you don't use search kibitzing to look up the word "the". May I ask why it is that you want to perform such a search? Is it a shortcut to find Dutch players? If your intention is to submit thousands of correction slips pointing out that a "Van" should really be a "van", and "Von" should really be "von", then please don't. I could write a program in 15 minutes to accomplish what would otherwise represents countless hours of your and Sargon's labor. |

| | chessgames.com: <Would it be possible to add the "Not a draw" option> Wannabe suggested a very astute hack which should work perfectly, but it's a nice idea to include that feature as part of the game-lists. |

| | chessgames.com: And for some good news:
After replacing a router (twice) and a upgrading a switch, we are now very confident that the hardware problems plaguing our network during September and October are now solved. |

| | Stonehenge: Well, I was looking for Armin von Oefele but I couldn't remember his exact name, so I tried 'von'. Another annoyance is that one cannot search words like can and from. So players like Emre Can and Martin Severin From are hard to find at CG. |

I'm a huge fan of <The Outer Limits> so it doesn't take much to get a reference out of me. And in case you didn't recognize him, the actor with the rather large cranium was David McCullum! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0667848...
(And everything I know about two and tuppence I learned from Jill Haworth) |

| Nov-12-15 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> congrats on the major fixes... * * * * *
I almost feel guilty pointing out a very minor problem: Peter Parr (kibitz #27) where <CG> corrupts a link. This happens frequently enough to prompt me to suggest a general fix. First, it is convenient to just paste the link directly in. But for the fringe cases, perhaps <CG> could offer a general escape, like maybe pasted_link |

| | chessgames.com: <is it possible to change all "New York, New York USA" site tags into "New York, NY USA"> Certainly.
You've probably already noticed that when an editor (usually yourself) is hammering away on a specific issue like that, I put in a permanent fix. <Another annoyance is that one cannot search words like Can and From.> Agreed, it's annoying, but it's somewhat an intrinsic problem. Even if you could search for (say) "From sacrifice", what percentage of those results are really going to be about Martin Severin From? It's not going to be a fun search no matter how you approach it. What can be done is this: I can make a few special hacks so that the names Can and From (and others we think of) be searchable as a one-off, straight from search "From". (It doesn't work at this time of this posting but hopefully will shortly.) <zanzibar> Ah yes, the paren problem. The logic there is OK but could be improved. The pasted_link isn't so bad, although people savvy enough to know some inside trick like that are just as likely to know how to escape parens with ( and ) |
|
| Nov-12-15 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> There's the case of the missing parens, and there's also the case of the trailing dash: http://en.chessbase.com/post/edward...- I think I would just start using the syntax all the time if it was available. W T Mayfield vs W R Trinks, 1959 (kibitz #57) (Ugh!) |

| | chessgames.com: I didn't even know that the hyphen was a URL terminator. That's being a bit overzealous. Testing: http://en.chessbase.com/post/edward... That's better. |
|
| Nov-13-15 | | zanzibar: Just curious <chessgames>... but why don't you just parse out to a whitespace (including \n) or end-of-string? |

| | keypusher: cg, sorry to whine, but going on your website with my Macbook Air continues to be an absolutely miserable experience. It seems to freeze every 30 seconds or so. I don't have that problem with the iPad, but the engine you kindly provide basically doesn't function on either the iPad or the Mac, Everything functions perfectly on my work PC. |

| | kingscrusher: Hi Chessgames.com
I had a wacky idea this morning just now about "Game tour guides"- I was looking at a classic Kasparov vs Karpov game (the final game of the last match in 1984-85) and it occured to me a lot of the comments were quite old. I wondered have you ever though about the idea of "Game tour guides" through chessgames.com A game tour guide could declare:
The start date of the tour
The end date of the tour (expected)
The number of games visited per day
The perspective of the tour
Then you could have multiple tour guides going through the site from different perspectives. For example, I could create an entry somewhere in your "tour guides" page for a historical look at world championship games, and make it a 2 week tour, and each day recommend two games to visit of interest. Is this a good idea somehow?! You get tour guides when going on holiday to places. Feedback welcome from all |
|
Nov-15-15
| | kingscrusher: BTW each tour guides followers should be visible to make it like a real life holiday tour. You get the idea I hope. |
|
Nov-15-15
| | kingscrusher: Also btw I think a game collection could perhaps be convertable into "Tour guide format" - and then rerusable for future repeat tours. So those could be adding to the available tours on certain dates. Maybe the most interesting games of the game collection can be scheduled within the game-tour context (start date to end date, games per day looked at) |

| | chessgames.com: <cg, sorry to whine, but going on your website with my Macbook Air continues to be an absolutely miserable experience. It seems to freeze every 30 seconds or so.> No need to apologize, this is exactly what this forum was made for. Unfortunately we don't have a Macbook Air to test on, but I'd like to ask you some more questions about the problem. Send me an email telling me what OS version you are on and describe the symptoms in more details (how long does it freeze, what seems to cause the freeze, etc.). Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience. |

| | chessgames.com: <kingscrusher> <Tour Guides> That's quite an idea. It reminds me of a book-club. I'll need some time to digest that, but in any case thanks for your well thought-out explanation of this idea. |

| | chessgames.com: <zanzibar: Just curious ... but why don't you just parse out to a whitespace> Of course we do, but there are problems when you stop *only* on whitespace. Non-HTML minded people like to shove punctuation marks up against URLs and expect them to continue working, so we strive to make that dream come true. As you illustrated, this comes at a price. |

| | Annie K.: <cg> pssst... email? :) |
|
Nov-15-15
| | Domdaniel: <Annie> -- <email> Ah yes, I believe I've heard of this. Some type of modish electronic letter-writing, I believe? Quite unlikely to catch on, of course -- these SF things never do. |
|
| Nov-16-15 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> Yes, parsing as you do is a convenience. But the standard lays it out like this:
<In practice, URIs are delimited in a variety of ways, but usually within double-quotes "http://example.com/", angle brackets <http://example.com/>, or just by using whitespace> See http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3986.txt (top p51).
So, some delimiter syntax would be helpful.
(And verbatim escapes would be as well - if you ever plan an upgrade). |

| Nov-16-15 | | NeverAgain: The following game apparently had a correction slip applied (result and event changed) a couple of days ago Keres vs Lutikov, 1964
but still shows up as "0-1" in the game subtitle (next to the ECO code) and on the players' pages. The PGN and the scoresheet show the correct "1/2-1/2". |
|
Nov-16-15
| | chessgames.com: Sorry about that NeverAgain, Sargon must have flubbed it. (In his defense, it's kind of weird in the admin panel, you have to remember to change the result in two places.) I'll just make a new correction slip pasting your comment and he'll fix it right this time. |
