 | | Domdaniel: < my total aversion to all things disco ...>
In the words of John Cooper Clarke:
"You left your heart in Frisco
You left your room in a mess
You left your hat in the disco
You never left your address." |

 | | Tabanus: <some kind of script to request WB to archive every single <cg> page could be written> Isn't it that what they've done with the websites here: https://www.loc.gov/websites/ ? |
|

 | | Tabanus: <For that, you are assuming not only that some kind of disaster would befall both Daniel and his home> It happens all the time. Lots of websites are lost, and will be lost. |
|
| Mar-04-16 | | zanzibar: <Dom> I'm not quite this vehement about it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpQ...
but I understand the sentiment. I do.
Nothing good comes out of disco.
OK, except maybe Greg Gumbel. |

| Mar-04-16 | | zanzibar: Here's the view 30 years on...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97l...
This is one way to obtain immortality, kinda.
As for disco?
Not so immortal. The BeeGee's themselves say that was the day it died. And who am I to argue with the BeeGee's? |

| Mar-04-16 | | zanzibar: <Tab> I think of Wayback can a redeemer of stale links. You really are thinking of a mirror copy of CG, which would involve backing up all the database tables as well as the HTML. I don't really see anyway for doing this beyond what <CG> already presumably does. And I would think you really want the source scripts (you known with the <CG> markup) which aren't being backed up by Wayback anyways. As far as backing up your own stuff...
<Write globally, backup locally.> That's generally what I try to do as much as possible. |

 | | Tabanus: <z> Source scripts? No. I don't know what that is. Are those archived at https://www.loc.gov/websites/? I see that the websites there are on finished events (elections, sports events etc), not ongoing ones. CG does contain stuff on finished events. In fact an endless stream of them. |

 | | AylerKupp: <chesgames.com> Now that Chessgames Challenge: Team White vs Team Black, 2015 has ended, it's time to come up with a title for the game. Here, in alphabetical order for your consideration, are the titles that have been suggested so far by members of Team White: "9. b4 Easy Draw For Black"
"An Inconvenient Truth"
"BayoNOT Attack"
"G File Fail"
"How to Draw with the King's Indian"
"I want my 6 Months BACK"
"Safe but Sorry"
"Stockfish vs. Komodo Chapter Infinity"
"Take my rook and my queen, please"
"The ajile gambit"
"The End of Correspondence Chess"
"The quick-draw KID"
"The TN that wasn't"
"Wasting Opportunities"
"We Didn't Listen to agile"
"Where do you put the bayonet?"
"While my bayonet gently weeps"
"White Proves CC Experts Right"
Of course, the final decision is yours and, frankly, I don't consider any of them particularly inspiring but since the game featured the somewhat controversial (at least from Team White's perspective) Bayonet Attack, some of the suggested titles with the word "bayonet" might be suitable. And, of course, Team Black might have other suggestions for titles. I would like to point out that choosing a good title for a game such as this one (and the Chessgames Challenge games) has become important for those participating in the game. It is a source of pride to come up with a proper title. So I suggest that a more formal procedure for selecting the game's title be instituted. It could be similar to what was done to select the opening in Chessgames Challenge: Team White vs Team Black, 2012; a preliminary phase where game titles are submitted and a final phase where a narrowed down set of titles is voted on. You could provide guidelines as to what makes a good game title. The whole process would take no more than a few days and, again, you would have the (necessary!) final decision to decide whether any of the game titles submitted are appropriate. As an additional incentive to game participation, only those who signed up to play in the game (and perhaps only those who actually voted for moves) would be eligible to submit game titles for consideration and vote on the game's title selection. And, to encourage sharp play, if the game ended in a win for one side, then only members of the winning team would be entitled to submit names and vote for them. This seems fitting. Something like this might encourage further participation in these games. And, with similar submission and voting software already developed, it hopefully would not take much additional effort. |

 | | OhioChessFan: <AK> the last and first title you suggested were in fact one long title, in that order. <CGC> I agree with <AK> in general that the teams involved in team games should pick the title, which is coincidentally the pun. This is not the ordinary pun of the day, which I concede has generated too much angst. But the last World Game, where the team collectively gave thousands of hours to the effort, had a consensus desire for a name/pun that wasn't chosen. The name/pun selected was fine, but the effort invested was a few seconds. I am still nonplussed about that decision. And I doubt there's ever been a pun that had as many people opposed to its choice, good as it was. In any event, please, let the people who put the work in on a team game decide the pun one time a year. |

Any word on when we can expect the posts of the game to be merged? |

I'm noticing that on occasions when I've posted comments and hit the "Return to Forum" button, that I'm occasionally shunted back to the home page. It's been happening for a while. |

Well I have to give you credit. Didn't expect my submissions to be on the list. |

 | | AylerKupp: <ajile> I play no favorites. Let <chessgames.com> be the bad guys and eliminate any or all of our suggestions from consideration. :-) I must say that I like my last-minute thought "While your bayonet gently weeps". It's obviously a take on "While your guitar gently weeps" and I think it captures the discontent that several Team White members (not me!) had about playing 9.b4. But let's see what <chessgames.com> thinks. |

 | | Domdaniel: Um, I'm not sure that weeping comes to mind in the context of bayonets. Weeping bayonets, that is - no doubt bayonets are responsible for vast amounts of weeping. What about the old line - "A bayonet is a weapon with a worker at each end" ...? |

 | | AylerKupp: <chessgames.com> It appears that you made a mistake when you merged the pages from the two teams in the recently completed Team Challenge. Using the link at the bottom left of the home page transfers you to a page that allows kibitzing. But after you return from posting, it returns you to a page that does NOT allow kibitzing. Without the leading "http://www." (so you can see the rest of the link), the URL of the non-kibitzing link is "chessgames/perl/chessgame?gid=17995506". Without the leading "http://www.", the URL of the link that allows kibitzing is "chessgames/perl/challenge?gid=17995506". By force of habit you used "chessgames" instead of "challenge" on the link that does not allow kibitzing. Please correct this as soon as you can and <before> you delete the link at the bottom left of the home page that allows kibitzing. |

 | | OhioChessFan: Not the end of the world, but can we get an on/off switch for our ignore list? Currently, if we wanted to properly follow the page numbers cited in the kibitzing of the team game, we'd have to figure out what people on either side we have on ignore, take them off and later on put them back on. Any other time, my solution is to sign out. But signing out leaves me ineligible to read the kibitzing of an ongoing game. There's a few other nuanced examples besides team games where such would be convenient. Surely a one click deal wouldn't be that hard to implement. |

 | | AylerKupp: OK, now this is a weird one. I went out to breakfast this morning and on my Samsung (Android 5.1.1) phone clicked on the Team White vs Team Black, 2015 link, <chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=17995506> (without the leading <http://www.> so you can see the link in full) on the right side of the home page and got the <mobile> version of the page which allowed kibitzing. I said to myself, "Self, great! They fixed it."). But then when I got home I tried it on my old 32-bit computer running Windows XP, clicked on the Team White vs Team Black, 2015 link on the right of the home page, and with the same URL I was sent to the version of the page that did not allow kibitzing. I tried IE 8 (I told you I had an old machine) but also with Chrome 48.0.2564.116 (not quite the latest version), Firefox 44.0.2 (the latest version), and Opera 35.0.2066.92 (also the latest version) and the link in all of them took me to the page that did not allow kibitzing. So apparently the <chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=17995506> URL allows kibitzing in my Android phone but not on my Windows XP desktop; for that one you need the <chessgames.com/perl/challenge?gid=17995506> URL. Good luck with this one. |

 | | WannaBe: There's an extra 5 in the URL, it's 1799506. I was wondering why I got game not found error. =) |

 | | WannaBe: I can't view that game using Chess Viewer Deluxe II, it says invalid PGN, if I switch to pgn4web I can see the game, but no kibitz'n. |
