| May-20-16 | | Shams: <Domdaniel> <We should encourage the intellectually challenged to use their little outlets, so the rest of us can get on with the business of doing whatever it is that we do.> Not just a note but a full chord of condescension. That's rare from you. |

 | | Domdaniel: <Shams> True. But the context demanded it. |
|
| May-20-16 | | Shams: "I make no claim to have controlled my tone but rather confess plainly that it has controlled me." Whatever, we deserve it. <Annie K> is quite right. As they say in Zen practice, the way to control your animal is to give it a yard in which to play. |

| May-20-16 | | User not found: If I fall under the "intellectually challenged" (!?) I'd gladly go post in my forum about football and The Beatles all day. But would you want to miss a cheeky 'lol lol lol' from Hazzarinho? A swift condescending 'I'm *better* than you' from Abdel? A photo of your childhood pet boiling in a pan from Keyser Soze? Cmo'n guys be fair, these people aren't the kind who can integrate into their real live communities, chessgames makes them tough guys. And on a serious note. The Rogoff page needs to go. All you need to do is check on twitter to see someone has been reporting this site to the FBI for what gets said there. The cafe's okay.. You'll all be lolling with Harry at Xmas. :) |

| May-24-16 | | zanzibar: I like both the Cafe and Rogoff... they aren't entirely the wastelands that some might think. Maybe that's just me. |
|
| May-24-16 | | zanzibar: But what about this game?
E Schallopp vs Gossip, 1890
Why can't I find it in my version of <0000-1899.zip>? |
|
May-24-16
 | | WannaBe: <z> you have to extract it first. =))) |
|
| May-24-16 | | zanzibar: Doh! Why didn't I think of that you rascally rabbit! |
|
May-24-16

 | | chessgames.com: <zanzibar: But what about this game? E Schallopp vs Gossip, 1890. Why can't I find it in my version of <0000-1899.zip>?> That's very odd. I can think of two or three possible reasons but they are sound extremely unlikely. The first idea that came to my mind is that it used to be labeled as 1900 and recently a correction slip fixed it. Please take no offense that I have not completely written off the possibility that it's in the file and you missed it somehow. Or there might be some very subtle bug that's been in action for many many years that you've just uncovered now. |

 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Schallopp vs Gossip (game #1228458) is included in the latest version of 0000-1899.zip; but until very recently, it was in 1900-1909.zip. #1228458 was the game with the weird bug (fixed in April) that caused it to be labeled "1900" even though the date "1890.08.29" was given in the PGN; and that bug also meant it was included in the wrong .zip file. |

 | | chessgames.com: SQ is right as usual, kibitzing search on the game ID refreshed my memory
chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #24727). By the way, did you all know you can do kibitzing searches on game IDs? A genuine undocumented feature. |
|
May-24-16
 | | Penguincw: Cool, how? Is it just some code on the Search Kibitzing page (but then it's not available to all members)? Does it work on other mediums (player pages, chessforums, tournaments, etc.)? I believe the feature of putting "Search Kibitzing" for a certain page has been asked over and over, so I guess this is the answer. |
|
May-25-16
 | | chessgames.com: < how? > The search engine wrongly reads the hidden HTML which has ruffled a few feathers in the past when people try to search for things like "CENTER" or "TABLE" or other HTMLish words. So the old computer joke is true: when it's a nuisance it's a bug, but now that's it's useful it's an "undocumented feature." Will it work for TIDs or PIDs? It will be very messy. The GIDs have the advantage of being the only 7-digit numbers we use, all of the other indices are much smaller. Suddenly it's a bug again. |
|
| May-25-16 | | zanzibar: It's too bad you don't allow some syntax like
@tid=<nnnn> or @pid=<nnnn> or @cid=<nnnn> both for searches, and for posting.
* * * * *
The 1900 behavior is very bizarre, no matter how you slice it. Somehow <CG> must have stored a date separate from the dates inside the PGN tag? Hard to understand...
Has all games been corrected now?
(Too bad for me, I'm working off a snapshot. On the other hand, maybe I can scan the next timeslice to find all the mis-classified games). |
|
May-25-16
 | | SwitchingQuylthulg: Yes, all similar date anomalies in the database have been fixed. |
|
May-25-16
 | | chessgames.com: <Somehow <CG> must have stored a date separate from the dates inside the PGN tag?> Of course we do! It's a database, not a huge pile of text files. The shameful part is that the two data sources can get out of synch, but this has been tracked to admin error. The admins can do things that the software should prevent -- one day we'll fix that, but for now we're employing the age old technique of "stop doing that!" |

 | | WannaBe: Hal 9K: "I'm sorry Daniel, I'm afraid I can't let you do that." |
|
May-25-16
 | | Domdaniel: Hal, a little later: "I'm sorry, Daniel, I don't seem to be able to prevent you from doing that. So I've wiped all the database files instead..." |
