 | | chessgames.com: I know; that was me working. I had to restart it. |

As far as I know, <chrisowen> confines his posting activity to a maximum of three posts per day, all on the same (POTD) page. How much bandwidth can that waste?

| Jan-24-17 | | zanzibar: <<OhioChessFan>: Site went offline for about 2 minutes, 4:14-4:16 AM.> <OCF> must be an insomniac. At least, if his name is true to his timezone. |
|
| Jan-24-17 | | zanzibar: I'm with <Abdel> as concerns <CO>. I don't think it's from a random word generator, at least not silicon-based. It could be classic behavior exhibited by those with certain conditions, and for whom we should be somewhat tolerate. This has occurred to you (<CG>), hasn't it? . |
|
| Jan-24-17 | | disasterion: I'm with <OCF> regarding <chrisowen> - I used to find it funny and I'd like to think it's an ongoing art project. I have a weakness for semi-random gibberish... Though it seems less effective recently and I can't be bothered to wade through it any more. But it's easy to ignore, and a couple of posts a day on the POTD which still obliquely refer to the solution don't seem like a problem to me. |
|
| Jan-24-17 | | TheFocus: And yet sometimes <chrisowen> posts in English non-gibberish. |
|
| Jan-24-17 | | zanzibar: <Focus> I believe you should be using the past tense. As would be consistent with the alternative... |
|
| Jan-25-17 | | Boomie: Although it is true that <CO> is mostly confined to POTD, that is a place where new users naturally go. They are going to be turned off by his/her/its gibberish and be less likely to Premie up. |

I believe <zanzibar> has raised an important question: Can <chrisowen> help it? My impression on reading his posts, and particularly comparing them with his posts from years past, is that he has some progressive condition akin to Tourette's Syndrome. <chrisowen>'s early posts are not gibberish. That element appeared after he'd been here for a while, and since then it appears to have become gradually more extreme. Please proceed with compassion. It would be awfully unjust to sanction someone for something he can't help. ∞ |

 | | Stonehenge: On the home page I'm seeing a red flashing dot behind today's live game. |
|
Jan-25-17
 | | chessgames.com: <red flashing dot> But do you like it? |
|
Jan-25-17
 | | Stonehenge: No I don't. I find it slightly annoying. |
|
Jan-25-17
 | | chessgames.com: I'm sorry to hear that; we're trying it as a substitute for the string [LIVE] that used to appear in the same spot. |

 | | chessgames.com: <Games 60 and 65 are transposed:> I'm sorry, could you name the games please? |
|
Jan-25-17
 | | chessgames.com: (I ask because what's game #60 for you might not be game #60 for me.) |

Jan-25-17
 | | OhioChessFan: It's correct now. The last two Carlsen games had been out of order. |

 | | Stonehenge: < * Overall winning percentage = (wins+draws/2) / total games in the database. 1 exhibition game, blitz/rapid, odds game, etc. is excluded from this statistic.> CG, can you put the second sentence below the first one? That's more pleasing to the eye IMHO. |

| Jan-26-17 | | morfishine: <CG> Sorry, your reply doesn't hold water. Your "Blow The Whistle" lists 7 reasons for the report (not including 'other'). These are
(1) username is inappropriate
(2) Spamming, advertising, or duplicating posts. (3) Obscene, profane, racist, or sexist content (4) Personal attacks against other user(s) (5) Post may violate U.S. law. (6) Post is off-topic.
(7) Post reveals personal information
I see no category that requires one to BE NICE, which was the reason given Case Closed

 | | chessgames.com: You can make the argument that wasn't a personal attack. I tend to disagree, but it was only a 24 hour probation, so if I'm wrong then I apologize and no great harm was done. But suppose you're right: in that case, are you really asking for permission to tell people to "shut up" as you please? I'd prefer you wouldn't. |

 | | chessgames.com: <CG, can you put the second sentence below the first one? That's more pleasing to the eye IMHO.> What you're witnessing are tiny HTML changes designed to make page work better with mobiles. Ideally we can get the page to behave differently depending on the type of device ("responsive" is the buzzword) but if you could see the page across an array of devices you'd find that some are much greater eyesores than others. If you're only look at desktop-Chessgames you're not seeing the whole picture. But FYI, that nuance bothers me just as much as you, and I want to compress that text when on a machine with a wide monitor. We'll get there. Meanwhile the mobile player pages look GREAT. |
|
Jan-26-17
 | | chessgames.com: OK, I made that little piece of text a <div> with a max-width of 340, that should improve the situation for all devices. |

 | | Stonehenge: I see no difference here for example Paul van der Sterren on my laptop. But here Garry Kasparov it's all very neat. |
|
Jan-27-17
 | | chessgames.com: That's because there's a process that caches pages, and not all players are on the same refresh cycle. |
