| Mar-03-17 | | whiteshark: Arrgh, I've forgotten that it was a draw, so generally no sac explorer :( Sorry. |
|
| Mar-03-17 | | zanzibar: Excluding draws from the sac explorer by default? Hmmm... not necessarily the "right" way to do it. (Again, have an option for that, but default should be the most versatile/general). |
|
| Mar-04-17 | | zanzibar: Here's another example of first/last name crossover... C.H.O.D. Alexander
OK then, using EZ-search:
search "alexander" It comes up with the profile for this player:
Alexander Alekhine Whereas looking for <Alexander> in the Advanced Search: http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... I learn there are 42 players, 41 of which don't have the last name <Alexander>. Gheesh. |

 | | Richard Taylor: <chancho: A scene from the Simpsons with Magnus commenting on Homer's game with his father.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ax... That's hard case. The Simpson's is genius. It's never dull, I watch bits of it and am still entertained... "Don't you all want to watch the Superbowl."
"Get lost!"
Was that Magnus Carlsen supposedly commenting?
It is interesting the number of famous people they have had on the Simpsons. |

 | | chessgames.com: <I learn there are 42 players, 41 of which don't have the last name <Alexander>. Gheesh.> Exactly like FIDE search behaves. IMO when somebody enters a search you should regard it as a last (family) name, every time, unless there are two or more names in which case at least some of them are family names. This is one of the several reasons why the "sort-name" method is superior to having a field in the database structured in FIDE comma-separated format. |

 | | chessgames.com: <<CG> what is the status of the photos I send in so long ago?> I have an inbox full of photos from lots of users. Some day I want to go through them and perform the many steps necessary to get them online. The big picture is that some sort of client-side upload feature needs to be in place. The even bigger picture is that the format of the files needs to change from <full_name.jpg> to <pid.jpg>. |

| Mar-04-17 | | zanzibar: <<chessgames> Exactly like FIDE search behaves.> Well, I never said <CG> couldn't improve upon FIDE. (That is, once it catches up with it as regards handling player names). <IMO when somebody enters a search you should regard it as a last (family) name, every time, unless there are two or more names in which case at least some of them are family names.> Yes, the default should be to search on pre-comma names. Of course we could discuss lots of ways to handle this. Details abound. For the record - here's how SCID does it:
1) The search term is automatically wildcarded, and is case insensitive. E.g. <FIS> will match any name (first & last) with the letters FIS in it. Like FISCHER, but also like HADJITTOFIS.
Not optimal.
2) An exact name can be searched for, in case sensitive fashion, but enclosing the search term with double-quotes. E.g. "Fischer, R"
* * * * *
<This is one of the several reasons why the "sort-name" method is superior to having a field in the database structured in FIDE comma-separated format.> Yes, much, much easier to scan a list by eye. And for several other reasons, like having the recognizable part of the name right out in front. |

<<what is the status of the photos I send in so long ago?> I have an inbox full of photos from lots of users. Some day I want to go through them and perform the many steps necessary to get them online.> OK, then it's just simple neglect.
Great, because there were rumors that Junge was being neglected because of his admittedly stupid political affiliations. But we all know he already paid his debt for that, and probably would like a chance at redemption. But, as far as this personal submitter, it seems that some of my submissions have been in the inbox for quite a long time. And not to be too green with jealousy, please note that I've seen myself leap-frogged several times with squawking too much. Patience I might have, but still...
<
The big picture is that some sort of client-side upload feature needs to be in place. >
OK, agreed. But let's clear the on-deck circle entrants first, shall we? <The even bigger picture is that the format of the files needs to change from <full_name.jpg> to <pid.jpg>.> I would be most happy to accommodate this. Though I might suggest <CG> in turn accommodate <pid_extra.jpg> or maybe even <extra_pid.jpg> and just strip off the fluff (which might be useful for humans to know which end is up). Also, could the portrait sizes be standardized to fit on a 1024x648 screen? Perhaps with the portrait itself being a link to the full resolution image? I know HTML makes this kind of thing pretty easy. OK, thanks. |

| Mar-09-17 | | Travis Bickle: Attn: Daniel Freeman, this little coward bastard unprovoked is insulting me again. Do I have to put him in the hospital for you to do something about it? This is the B.S. I'm talking about. See below. <perfidious: <Unf: User not found: Where's Trav????>
Invisible, hence good riddance to bad rubbish.> P.S. Why don't you revoke his Chess Editor status? |
|
Mar-09-17
 | | chessgames.com: <Travis Bickle> Blowing the whistle was sufficient and action has been taken. There is no need to post a complaint here. Also: do not make posts that quote the material that you claim is objectionable. |
|
| Mar-11-17 | | Travis Bickle: Yes Sir... |
|
| Mar-11-17 | | zanzibar: It's nice to have PH Clarke's annotations, at least for a few of Petrosian's games. E.g. Petrosian vs Y Kotkov, 1946 (Wonder how/who did those.)
But here's a request - Clarke is a bit wordy at times. <Would it be possible to have an annotation toggle button on a game page?> That way, the annotations could be turned on/off as the user wishes. Also, do we have the ability to have playable variations? . |
|
| Mar-11-17 | | morfishine: <Travis Bickle> in another pickle lol
Leave <perfidious> alone, his status and reputation here at <CG> is impeccable and impervious to assault ***** |
|
| Mar-11-17 | | zanzibar: <chessgames> - Another url issue: First of all - I need verbatim mode to properly communicate it. But let's try, it's a link to a position of a game over at <CT>, here's the desired link: http:__chesstempo.com_gamedb_game_969907_2r4q_p4-
pk1_3pb1p1_N7_1PPp2n1_P3b1PB_2R1P1K1_3NQR2%20b%2-
0-%20-%202%2029
Change all underscores to /'s, like this
http://chesstempo.com/gamedb/game/9... Why doesn't this work on <CG>? Well, why does it kinda work, but mangle the url to become inoperable? |

 | | WannaBe: Its because of the (bad) FEN with the slashes, in it. And the way CG.com perl interpret (or parse) out the FEN, that's causing the problem. |
|
| Mar-11-17 | | zanzibar: <Wannabe> then the tokenizer is wrong. It knows it parsing out a url and should continue until it finds some whitespace or \0. All these auto-dumb rules are killing me.
Give me a verbatim escape, and a url escape with regular, predictable behavior and I'm happy to let <CG> work its automagic. Or, as the case may be, not work. |
|
| Mar-12-17 | | morfishine: I want to file an official complaint against <OhioChessfan> above and beyond the "Blow the Whistle" process. He is clearly trolling me, following my posts, and posting derogatory comments. I have him on ignore, so its only by chance that I see these posts (mainly by scrolling down recent kbitz, these show the last post, even if its someone is on your ignore list.) Somebody in authority here at <CG> needs to tell that Arse-hole to STFU I've told him if he doesn't like my posts, to put me on ignore. But this ignoramus does the opposite: He actively searches for my posts. There is a term for this: 'cyber-stalking' which is actually illegal. At the very least, this should earn him a solid ban from posting here at <CG>, perhaps a 1-week ban would be enough to teach him a lesson But then again, his thick skull may prevent positive reinforcement ***** |

 | | saffuna: <There is a term for this: 'cyber-stalking' which is actually illegal. > Nonsense. That is not illegal.
Anybody can reply to any post on this site. |

Mar-12-17
 | | saffuna: I looked at <morfishine>'s last post on the most recent pages he has posted on.
<ocf> replied to <morfishine> on two--count 'em, TWO--of the twenty pages. Both times <morfishine> had complained about a pun, and <ocf> said he should stop complaining about the puns, that he had been doing it forever, and that <morfishine> must have mental issues to keep doing this. In my opinion those were completely legitimate replies, and not cyberstalking in any way, shape or form. Also legal. <morf>, if you going to post negative opinions on this site you are going to receive critical responses. |
|
| Mar-12-17 | | rogge: Damn right, both <saffuna> and <ocf>. |
|
Mar-12-17
 | | chessgames.com: <NOTE: Do NOT use this page to report specific violations of posting policy.> ...
<morfishine: I want to file an official complaint...> Then do it in the official way, and use the <Blow the Whistle> function. |

|
| Mar-12-17 | | zanzibar: In-house, <chessgames>, in-house. |
|
| Mar-12-17 | | zanzibar: (ChessTempo has both features via Simple Machines, LLC framework, and WordPress also accommodates both - of course, I've mentioned this before, but the occasional repeat seems appropriate. HTML provides both features natively, and <CG> would just need to prescan for abuse. Seems far, far a simpler process given the involved auto-magic scanning already in place. imo, that is.) |
