| Feb-10-21 | | Z legend of CG: When your premium membership expires your forum is automatically shutdown by <CG>. That's why I never put any of my historical research there if I could avoid it. . |
|
| Feb-10-21 | | Z legend of CG: In <whiteshark>'s case, he notified the community that, due to his condition, he wouldn't be renewing his membership. I can't remember, nor can I now even check, if he was explicit about that. But he did say his membership was expiring, and that he wasn't likely to be posting much in the future. Tantamount to the same.
Anyways, the precedent was established with <DomDaniel>, and if anybody should be next, <whiteshark> would be it. . |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Wilber G> Aha it is I who did not read <Check It Out's> post carefully enough. Anyways I support the idea to give <whiteshark> a lifetime membership. |
|
Feb-10-21
 | | Check It Out: <jfq> I worded it poorly. I am for gifting <whiteshark> a membership so that his forum could remain open (if indeed he did not shut it down purposefully). |
|
| Feb-10-21 | | Z legend of CG: As I mentioned to <wannabe> the other day, but forgot to mention in this discussion... When a premium membership expires, the user avatar also disappears. So, if a user still has an avatar, but their forum is closed, it's definitely the user's choice. In this case, <whiteshark>'s avatar is also gone, so it's quite likely (but not 100% certain of course) that his membership expired, as he forewarned us. <CIO> if I may say - you are exceedingly generous. (I've been glad to be a member of the <CG> community with you, both on and (Rog)off!) |
|
| Feb-10-21 | | nok: <Susan Freeman: I will let the free speech remain.> Spam and offensive messages <hinder> freedom of speech, by putting off potential participants. That's why virtually all forums have moderation. Claiming lack of it is a feature is simply a cop out. |
|
Feb-10-21
 | | MissScarlett: <His forum will be open for historical purposes at least.> I see no purpose beyond mawkishness.
<<Susan Freeman: I will let the free speech remain.>> Mad them, <Miss Susan>. You sure got balls. |
|
Feb-10-21
 | | Susan Freeman: Re < whiteshark> I say let it be. |
|
| Feb-10-21 | | Z legend of CG: First things first...
Unfortunate news, <CG> finds a way to thwart CIO's good intentions. It appears that expiration of an account reverts all its settings to default - both avatar and forum. <whiteshark>'s account has been restored to premium status, but sans his classic avatar. That's a minor inconvenience, though his avatar was certainly as iconic as <DomDaniel>'s. A major inconvenience is that his forum's default setting is closed. So, the forum is as inaccessible as if <CIO> hadn't made his generous donation. . |
|
| Feb-10-21 | | Z legend of CG: <Missy> - beside exploring the seamier sides of chess research, there's also the actual game itself. Not only was <whiteshark> widely respected for his historical contributions, but his forum was known for it's chessic content. Of course, it takes a true disciple of the game to appreciate things like rook + pawn endgames. Or that community is something more transcendental than transactions - financial or otherwise. . |

 | | Fusilli: <nok: ... Spam and offensive messages <hinder> freedom of speech, by putting off potential participants.> FWIW, I qualify as someone who fits <nok>'s concern. Since this is a private [virtual] venue, freedom of speech is Susan's choice, not a right. And being her website, she is entitled to whatever rules she wants to uphold. But I think <nok> brings up a good point and I hope Susan gives some consideration to it. |

| Feb-12-21 | | Z legend of CG: The url's the same, but the feel is somehow different. |
|
| Feb-12-21 | | George Wallace: Nothing is different on cg just because Susan owns it instead of Daniel. Same feel. Same stuff going on. Same complainers. The only time it was different was when Annie was running around, using her position as an admin to ban and censor people whose politics she didn’t like. Daniel never ever did that. He was kind of libertarian in his approach. |

 | | saffuna: I'm hoping yesterday's games from the Opera Knockout tournament can be posted soon. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen:
I agree with <nok> and <fusilli> The abusive and pointless political argument from Rogoff is spilling over into other places, such as the Kibbutzer's Kafe and Memorable Quotes and more- and I am not impressed with the notion that this is "free speech" that should be tolerated no matter how obnoxious, no matter how much it may put off other members. I think <nok's> point about moderation is substantial. I don't think a lack of moderation is a "feature." If so, it's a dismal "feature" and I doubt it is a good idea for a business model. |
|
| Feb-12-21 | | George Wallace: Spilling over? No. What we have is <Zanzibar> and <Saffuna> bringing it to these pages. After that, and relevant response is fair game. If you don’t like it, have the guts and honesty to call out <Zanzibar> and <Saffuna> for bringing it here, and don’t make it sound like it’s “just spilling over”. Noks baloney about free speech putting people off is just another tactic to try to manipulate Susan. Pah- leeeeeeeeeease! |
|
| Feb-12-21 | | Caissanist: Of course Daniel limited political content. That's why the Rogoff page became political in the first place, because it was the only page he allowed extended political arguments on. Of course the site is different. Bookie is gone, live games are gone. Far fewer new tournaments and games are added. No updates to the site function. Corrections don't seem to be getting processed, much. These issues will have to be addressed in the long term for it to remain viable. |

 | | Susan Freeman: Oh <Jess> I never intended free thoughts to be never moderated.
What you see is just the spill over of the multiple deletions.
There is a difference between spam and freedom of thought.
You would not believe the amount of garbage that gets posted and deleted everyday. The internet is as vast as the ocean, and yet however eco conscious we are, there is always some garbage that washes up on shore.
I am not condoning the plastic straws, but a few wash up.
I say, unless it becomes overbearing, move on.
The problem is that censorship just invites more spam.
I think this can be self regulatory. |
|
Feb-12-21
 | | Susan Freeman: <George Wallace> Yes, after all Daniel IS his mother's son. The apple does not fall far from the tree. We DID think alike. And yes.....we cannot have an administrator being biased in her job. and then issuing an ultimatum to the owner!
To ban a member because he did not agree with her? ummm. no. just no. |
|
Feb-12-21
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Cassianist> Do you have a correction slip that has not been processed? If so let me know and I'll look at it. I just went to the corrections page and there are around 60 sitting there at the moment. There were several thousand before <Stonehenge> and other volunteers processed them. I'm not sure where you are getting this <Corrections don't seem to be getting processed, much> from? |
|
Feb-12-21
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Cassianist> Since <Susan Freeman> and <Steven> arranged for some of the volunteer editors to have the ability to process correction slips, I have done some of them. But as mentioned <Stonehenge> most of all put a dent into that enormous backlog. Some of the slips he processed had been sitting there since 2012. At any rate there is another reason why certain slips might seem slow- somebody has to look at each slip and evaluate it, before making a decision to process it. So for example this slip here:
<Game - G1075140
Morphy vs NN, 1858
anon paulmorphy1969
Multiple Slips
bad_player
— yhe name of opponent of morphy are paul ross — the opponent are Paul Ross> I would not process that slip myself. It does not supply a source for the new information. It's also been written carelessly, which doesn't help instill confidence. |

 | | Susan Freeman: <Jess> I was just wondering the same thing! We have made such progress! the Bookie is not gone, just on hold for now.
we are busy.
And tournaments are added .
Why all this unfounded negativity
The correction people are doing a stellar job, for which I am very appreciative. |
|
Feb-12-21
 | | jessicafischerqueen:
<Susan Freeman> Yes good signs so far I think the same. It's a miracle what you guys have managed to do starting from scratch as you all did. |
|
| Feb-12-21 | | Olga Man: I second the push back on "No updates to the site function." I am clearly biased as I have spent the last few months pouring free time into building a great PGN Viewer. Stephen and I already have working prototypes on CG. I never got a lot of useful feedback from the public so we are just slowly grinding at it on our own. Everyone should complain less; I've lost so many hours of sleep for this cause and I'm still 😄
<Hang in there> I'd insert an image of a cat hanging on a wire but CG ancient forums do not support that... At the end of the day you get what you get, so don't throw a fit, because you'll still only get what you get. |
