 | | Willber G: <Z legend of CG: Good thing <CG> is keeping up these days - The Guardian just posted an article with a <CG> link to a recent game: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2... Well spotted, you can thank me for that! ;)
(Actually, <Sokrates> mentioned it first...) |

 | | Tabanus: Reposted from Bistro:
<Mar-24-21 Alan McGowan: In case it is relevant to posting by <Z4all>: In the summer of 2020 I sent 26 photos of players to Annie, for use in biographies. She later told me she no longer worked for chessgames.com and that she had passed on the images to Sargon. These images have not been used on the relevant pages.> |

| Mar-28-21 | | Caissanist: I don't know why Susan doesn't just sell this site, if it doesn't make enough money as a standalone to be a going concern then perhaps it could be merged into one of the other chess sites. I would hate to see all the chess history here just disappear into the ether, which is what will happen eventually if the code base does not get updated. Maybe she's trying and nobody is interested, hope that's not it. |
|
| Mar-29-21 | | Sokrates: <Caissanist>. Unfortunately, I have to concur with your notions. Like you, I have been on this site for many many years. It has been a comforting, familiar place with many good friends and interesting people.
I would love to see it "live long and prosper", but inspite of Susan's laudable passion to honour her son's work, the site has suffered a slow but consistant decay since Daniel passed away. CG is an internet storehouse of irreplaceable chess treasures, and I agree with you that it would be unbearable should it disappear from our reach. I support your suggestions and hope Susan or someone else will make a decision very soon. All said, of course, with the highest respect for and cordial thanks to those who have worked hard to keep the vessel afloat. |
|
| Mar-29-21 | | George Wallace: What is all the crying and whining about? What exactly is such a big problem? All of the bios and history is still here, waiting to be discovered and read by anyone who visits. What then is the big freaking deal?
What? Just because some puzzle of the day isn't updated correctly, or the game of the day is a repeat? Talk about NON-ISSUES!
Why don't you old farts stop all your complaining and just forget the whole thing? |
|
| Mar-29-21 | | Sokrates: ... says a man who entered CG in November last year and seems to have taken the privilege of insulting, ridiculing and degrading members who have been on this site for over 15 years, members who show concern for the future of the site, because, guess what? - they love it. Go away yourself, despicable little man with horrible manners. |

 | | Tabanus: <GW> The problem is that the standard is now so low that the site gets filled up with morons like you instead of chess enthusiasts. CG staff should have at least one person interested in chess, they don't. |

| Mar-29-21 | | fabelhaft: Some sort of <major change for the better in 3-7 weeks> was announced a bit over 7 weeks ago, I wonder what that was about? |
|
Mar-29-21
 | | Tabanus: <fabelhaft> CG's programmers are very capable, and have improved the code etc. (I'm not an expert). They have provided us biographers with everything we need to edit tournaments, games and players. Unfortunateoly we are only a handful, and like I said, none (to my knowlwdge) in CG staff are interested in chess. |

| Mar-29-21 | | metatron2: <Sokrates: CG is an internet storehouse of irreplaceable chess treasures, and I agree with you that it would be unbearable should it disappear from our reach. I support your suggestions and hope Susan or someone else will make a decision very soon> Agree.
Despite using old web technologies, I think that CG does have some powerful assets: Surprisingly enough, it is still the only website that really combines social network with chess games and events. Other chess sites do it only partially (if at all), providing chess forums that are detached from the games/events, or allow real-time comments on games broadcast, but without the real connection between games/events database and the users comments, and without having other social activities (like chess bookie). And CG still has a dedicated user base (even though it is on decline). So I think that it is possible to sell this site to a hi-tech company that is interested in this field. Such a move should be done with caution though. Such sale can take CG to a whole new level in case that company will be real interested on improving this site, but such company can also completely kill CG in case they will decide it is not profitable, because they have no sentiments (that Susan and other contributing users have). There have been too many cases of companies buying smaller companies (that are in difficulties), and shutting down their activity closely afterwards. |

 | | MissScarlett: <There have been too many cases of companies buying smaller companies (that are in difficulties), and shutting down their activity closely afterwards.> If it's asset-stripping you're referring to, tell <PlayMagnus> I'm going nowhere. I fear any takeover would put an end to the <eclectic, free-wheeling conversation> that is the site's lifeblood. |

 | | MissScarlett: <They have provided us biographers with everything we need to edit tournaments, games and players.> The editing tools still seem glitchy. BTW, how can I delete a playerid? See: Frederick Owen |

 | | Susan Freeman: Oh come on!
I am doing things that you do not even know about.
Things take time, and legality, and effort.
This site is here to stay!
It is not mine. It is Daniel's.
And right now we are in a transition.
I think the data base is getting up to date, thanks to our wonderful volunteers .
I have a boy wonder working overtime, and I am eliminating garbage. I am sure Miss S and others know what I mean .
Everything is under control.
sheesh.
You all are being dour and pessimistic.
the ones who know, know.
What's not to love?

 | | Susan Freeman: <George Wallace> and Covid does not help. Our horizons are narrow, and the petty becomes disproportionate. I am branching out to Canada and employing some new blood. I am OCD about this site. It is my blood line, and it will survive. |

So let it be written.
So let it be done. |

It's a bug that already has been reported. Which doesn't necessarily mean that something will be done about it. |
