Check It Out: I've found a bug in the opening explorer: I was walking through the Caro-Kann with the board flipped to black's perspective. after about move 9 or so, every move I clicked would flip the board back to white's view. I'd flip it back, make another move, and it would again flip back to white's view. Not a major thing, but annoying. Let's put <Sargon> on it! He loves to make the site better. /S

Check It Out: The World Chess Candidates are resuming on April 19th. I was on my mobile and had to go in to the archived tournaments section and search for several minutes to find the tournament page. Can you put it back up at the top of new events?

Check It Out: I just now realized that perhaps the Opening Explorer is biased to certain sides of openings, e.g. the white side of the C-K (which is no surprise). :)

Stonehenge: Speaking of the Opening Explorer, it needs to be updated. There must be thousands of games by now that it doesn't find because it hasn't been updated.

This kind of thing happens all the time in the software biz, and it is why I suggested that now might be a good time to sell the site. There is still obvious value in the database and user interface, not to mention our great user community, but the code base (aka source code) is probably worthless at this point, and the best objective course would likely be to just build a whole new site from the ground up, with 2021 technology, that knows how to access the existing databases and emulates/builds on the existing UI. That doesn't mean you <have> to sell to another site, but trying to do that on your own seems risky.

Check It Out: Hi <Susan>, first, thanks for keeping the site going, even if limping.

Second, chess players, if I may be so bold to speak on their behalf, are a cantankerous lot and generally don't like to be cheered on. They prefer copious quantities of data, in line with the infinite strings of chess analysis that occur in a game.

For example, if the project is to rebuild the base code, we'd like to hear about the scope of the project. Is the entire code being redone? Or, is it a patchwork approach? Who is contracted to do the job? What are their code writing qualifications? Do they play chess? What are the parameters for the timeline for the job? ad infinitum

Another example: putting up new events. What is the site's plan? What events are considered for addition? What are the parameters for inclusion in CG's New Events section? We understand the Louisville Open might not make the grade, but what are the cutoffs? Who decides these questions and who pays attention to upcoming chess events? Also, what is being done to insure that events that are chosen for inclusion are put up in a timely manner, and regularly updated? ad infinitum

Those are the sorts of details that chess players value. So any updates you have with that level of detail, especially during this tumultuous and uncertain time in CG's existence, would be greatly appreciated.

In case anyone in charge still gives a flying crap, this would never, ever be allowed to continue unabated under <Daniel Freeman's> watch. And yet administration has failed to curtail this "sock family," which has been rampant for months. Either unwillingness or ignorance of how to stop it is in play.

This is the latest, and onlythe tip of the iceberg for this particular "NIDA/LUBEK SOCKPUPPET FAMILY COMPLEX LUBEK! LUBEK!:

<Susan> I appreciate that, but as per the email conversation we had some time ago now, the problem is a "sock family."

I spoke about this with <Daniel> several times via email, and as I mentioned previously, the only way to stop a person from just coming back with a new sockpuppet is to ban their IP address.

Now there's an easy workaround for the "sock family" for this as well, though some can't be bothered- the family can purchase a VPN tunnel that will spoof their IP address.

<Daniel> explained all this to me, and in our final discussion on the topic he told me about the dread "Triple Ban."

Webmasters have a tool to defeat a VPN as well, though it should be used only sparingly.

You probably already know that any webmaster can block access if a visitor is using an ad blocker. Anti-ad blockers allow a webmaster to know if a visitor is using an ad blocker. Typically, the webmaster codes a notification on the page. So I visit a website, and since my ad blocker(s) are always on, the web page says "We notice you are using an ad blocker- please disable it while you visit us."

So webmasters also have access to tools that allow them to know if an IP address has been spoofed by a VPN tunnel. These tools recognize a spoofed IP address and could be used to block any user trying to get on to chessgames.com .

This is a big step though, and <Daniel> never told me if he had ever actually used the last part of the "triple ban."

The problem is that a lot of people use VPN tunnels to make their browsing more secure, and might not like having to temporarily disable their tunnel whenever they visit cg.com.

On the other hand, in the case of the <Nida> sock family, I see that you have been active in trying to stop their insufferable obscene advertising for their weird web pages and LUBECK CASTLE IS GREAT YOUR SOFTWARE SUCKS advertising campaign. I appreciate the work you already do on this issue.

But you have not kept pace. It's impossible to keep pace because they immediately make new socks and carry on as usual. There has never been a day on this site without a NIDA sock to continue their (exceedingly strange AND OFFENSIVE CAPLOCK) merchandising project.

So either hunt and clean the socks on a daily basis, or look in to <Daniel's> "triple ban" concept.

There is no other way to stop this. If you let it run, then other "sock families" may realize this is a good site to pester.

You know that this never, ever happens at chess.com eh?

I think maybe they have tons of money though, enough to pay an army of monitors.

Anyways good luck, and if there's anything I can do to help, let me know.

  stevemcd87: Hello everyone,

We've added the ability to select Aria as a PGN viewer.
Features we still need to integrate are:
- Board Interactivity(moving pieces) for game analysis
- Flipping board

It works well with odds game and 'null move' games.

Please let me know if you run into any issues.
