 | | MissScarlett: Being three weeks since the upgrade, with the analysis function still not working properly, perhaps it's time to consider the possibility that <steve> and <tristan> - God love 'em - aren't up to the job of fixing it. Is there a contingency plan? |

 | | WannaBe: <MissScarlett> Try this: The Chessgames Store |
|
Jul-04-21
 | | MissScarlett: It would be interesting to know the size of the market for commercial chess programs and databases, and whether it's kept pace with the apparent growth in online chess. With so many people nowadays playing on their phones, tablets and laptops (many of which no longer have inbuilt CD/DVDs), I suspect the proportion of players who've recently bought a commercial chess product is lower than, say, 10-15 years ago. True, you can purchase commercial programs in downloadable form, but given that there are also freeware versions of Stockfish, etc., I positively baulk at the thought! |

 | | Susan Freeman: <MissS> I talked to the owner of House of Staunton about a month ago, and he said the stock is flying off the shelves. He has opening for 15 men to work in his warehouse, and he has back orders that he is unable to meet because of the empty stock. Very encouraging for him, and a "good" type of problem. |
|
Jul-04-21
 | | MissScarlett: By commercial chess products, I was referring, of course, only to computer software. <Frank Camaratta is in the process of writing a book called ?The Staunton Chessmen and Their Predecessors?. > This him? Where does he source his stock from? |
|
| Jul-04-21 | | Z legend 000000001: <<Missy> ... God love 'em ...> Shouldn't that rather be <... God help 'em ...>?! |
|
Jul-04-21
 | | Susan Freeman: <Miss> re HOS. I have no idea where he gets his stock. We were just discussing the effects of ?the Queen?s gambit?.
I was not micromanaging his business. |

 | | WannaBe: Why are strange '?' appearing in posts? Saw one like that on Yifan Hou's page, now I see three in Susan's post. Checked with Chrome and Edge, anyone else sees this? Or is it my computer? |
|
Jul-04-21
 | | Susan Freeman: Yes....I thought we fixed that too. |

Jul-04-21
 | | Susan Freeman: A safe and happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans. The day the thirteen colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. |
|
| Jul-04-21 | | Total Jim: ... a day when over fifty brave and resolute men consciously signed their own death warrants for something greater and larger than themselves ... |

|
| Jul-05-21 | | George Wallace: Yes, Happy Fourth of July! Birthday to the greatest, most exceptional nation in the history of mankind. |
|

 | | Susan Freeman: <George > I have to agree. The only part I have a problem with is * all men are created equal* I have pondered this long and hard. But I have never taken one course in constitutional law, so what do I know. I refer the the good Lord in These situations. Lol |
|
| Jul-05-21 | | George Wallace: <Susan: I refer the the good Lord in These situations. Lol> A wise decision! |

 | | kingscrusher: Hi Guys
Maybe for a longer time project, I was wondering if public kibitzing could be applied to the Opening explorer e.g. Opening Explorer I would have liked to comment about Nbd2 being 5% higher results for White than the Milner Barry gambit and have a discussion about that. Opening up the Opening explorer for kibitzing discussion seems like a cool idea :) Cheers, K |

 | | saffuna: <Maybe for a longer time project, I was wondering if public kibitzing could be applied to the Opening explorer e.g.> Not just that. I would like a page where someone can post a position he/she finds interesting and ask for opinions. These could be positions from their own games or any game that isn't in the database. |

 | | Susan Freeman: Analyzer should be up and running......Thanks my main man, Steve McQueen. McDonald. and Tristan. |
|
Jul-05-21
 | | OhioChessFan: <kc> the openings get surprisingly little kibitzing on this site. Using your example, and the umbrella designation French Defense Advance, there's only 8 pages of kibitzing, and only 2 of the kibitzes in the last 8 years. French, Advance (C02) The Caro-Kann B10-19 has maybe 10 kibitzes total in the last 5 years on those 10 pages! I've never understood it, but people just don't kibitz about openings. Maybe a direct link from OE to the opening under consideration would increase those numbers, but I doubt it. |

 | | MissScarlett: < Analyzer should be up and running.....> It's looking good, but are we still using Stockfish 9? The latest version is #14. <Thanks my main man, Steve McQueen. McDonald. and Tristan.> I never doubted my boys for a minute. We got some of the top brains in the country working here. |
