We recently standardized the kibitzing to use Unicode. This is convenient for US users, who now can now include in their kibitzing things like emojis and non-Latin script copied from other websites. It also makes life easier for those of us who have to maintain these data sets.

However, it can introduce glitches when European kibitzers enter their special punctuation marks and diacritical marks from the keyboard, because most don't have their keyboard layout configured to support Unicode.

Are many kibitzers bothered by this? Post your opinions here, and that will help prioritize a fix for it.

MissScarlett: Shouldn’t it be called Nonunicode?
Dec-05-21
Premium Chessgames Member
beatgiant: <MissScarlett> Maybe you meant Non-Eurocode? Unicode is standard for web sites that need to support multilingual text: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode

MissScarlett: But what’s the point of a Unicode that’s not supported by many keyboards? That’s why it’s a Nonunicode.
Dec-05-21
Premium Chessgames Member
beatgiant: <MissScarlett> Keyboard layouts generally only support their own regional characters and encodings, and there are a huge number of those, so it's not maintainable to support them all. There are always Unicode input methods as described here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unico....

With a bit more work, it is feasible to add support for the European thing. So that brings me back to the question, how many kibitzers care about that?

Yes, I've done lots of testing and I'm aware of those. The current state of repair is as follows:

(1) Tournament pages: completed.
(2) Player bios: mostly completed.
(3) User game collections: mostly completed.
(4) Kibitzing: local keyboard issue above may be needed.

beatgiant: Oh and in addition to the above, I haven't done much testing on the mobile version of the site yet. It's a good bet some things aren't displayed right there either. If you're aware of any, please report them here.

You might have seen some instability in kibitzing while I rolled out a feature aiming to support European keyboard input.

Can someone with a European keyboard now please try kibitzing something like the following?

Hübner played …0—0 in a Réti and scored ½

(I used a US method to input the above and that does still work.)

Thanks. Next I'll prioritize a fix for the previews.

Tabanus: Ladislaus von Dory, I think most bios are garbled.

Hübner played ...0-0 in a Réti and scored ½. He was not born in Mähren like Takács was. --- My preview kibitz has five <?> signs here.

Yes, there are still a lot of bad data in the player bios and user game collections. I'll attend to those after we get people satisfied with the way kibitzing works.

I fail to see why is this a problem. Simply call it a CG-internal joke.
