'Are many kibitzers bothered by this? [well it affects every single member, seeing more or less the same errors since summer is a bit worrying on a plain text board with no other purpose] Post your opinions here, and that will help prioritize a fix for it.'

I have no literally no idea (motivation, logic, circumstances) why you are 'repairing' on still misconfigured servers for months. You certainly do not remove the cause(s), instead add patches/tweeks (possible room for new errors) for still 'faulty behaviour' that will need time consuming maintainance in the future. How about you shut down CG for 1-2 days, do a clean install and be assured an up to date server software in combination with streamlined html will handle every global input/output (since decades) without any problems (restores the former behaviour). If anything creating redundancy, not uncertainty would be my priority.

We are not talking older already rotten data, this stuff is happening on the live server as we speak.

Kibitzing with special (i.e. not ASCII) characters has worked here since Nov. 15.

As for support for inputs from regional keyboards, we just added that for Europe a few days ago (although previews are still not perfect, as <Tabanus> pointed out above). From checking the contents of user game collections, I'm aware that there are users out there with keyboards from several other regions besides Europe, but we never have supported those and probably never will (unless a lot of kibitzers post here and demand it).

The rest of us have to use Unicode input methods. It's by far the biggest standard on the web today. There are well-known ways to input all the characters (e.g. "alt codes" on Windows devices) or simply copy and paste from a source, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super....

Changing kibitzing is a huge deal. But bringing down the site for a few days is also a huge deal. We have a very small engineering team. And we aren't some Facebook type behemoth, so it's not easy throw tons of money around and grow this team. So I ask people to keep the expectations realistic.

I'm far from being a dreamer.

'Unicode input methods' is a term I personally never came across in practice on CG (<1% of all garbled text is a result of this), therefore we are not on the same page to begin with. This is affecting the average Joe independent of what gymnastics he/she does on his/her physical keyboard.

For context 'ASCII' is the special subset from a late 2021 point of view. What you continue to describe as 'special' is globally (including NA) regarded as web standard for over a decade now. In user and in dev land. Everone seems to agree so we can put terms like 'weird European keyboards' aside - it does not help the discussion. What we try to achieve here is 'normal' server behavior out of the box, nothing special.

CG fully migrated to Amazon Web Services (running on EC2 with a recently updated instance - that made the site slower). There is nothing to 'add keyboards' if you roll out an interactive server under a complete unicode umbrella. It doesn't matter what is thrown at the database it will cope with all different scenarios. This is why people came up with the whole concept to prevent exactly what keeps you busy for months (manually feeding in different signs all day long, with solutions that most probably do not survive the next internal security update). The CG umbrella is not working right now.

As my English sucks almost as much as CG puns I give this matter a good rest and just point to an ancient article (easy to follow also for non nerds) with the idea in mind to get back on the same page

https://www.smashingmagazine.com/20...

Why I personally came up with this again today was soley because even the kibitzing preview is broken now. Before the result of my final input would 'surprise' me, from now on I do not even have to finish a posting to get high blood pressure already.

Members are wondering what is going on.

'But bringing down the site for a few days is also a huge deal.'

Hence I calculated the financial loss of 1-2 days offline (midweeks, not prime time) to set up and monitor the system (testing inputs) much cheaper and less laborious (considering the amount of people involved) than this ongoing Odyssey for months. You can ask in e.g. AWS Developer Forum or Stack Overflow if this would make sense beforehand.

The 'footnotes' looking fresh, like. Finding postings praising 'schadenfreude' (totally irrespective of Granny who no doubt at all is a great chess poster) on CG is not that impressive. Witnessing how a (living) player like Nepo is treated online (not here, not yet) makes me prick up my ears. Just mix it up a bit. Like today's server errors that hit me numerous times by now.

Enough to call it a day.

The site is using Unicode. Your keyboard is what is not using Unicode. It's simply not true that everything would work automatically from there. Evidently, your OS is not converting your keyboard output into Unicode as you type it into the browser.

I implemented the solution within a day after you mentioned it. Nor did I ask for a budget to go out and buy myself a European laptop to be able to test it. It makes me laugh to think of that.

And the preview thing is pretty tricky, because it mixes inputs (your local encoding) and displays (Unicode). But I have been working on that and testing it with urgency.

I have to agree with <Jim>

Allowing "facebook style meme photo graphics" here is a poor idea.

This site has a hard enough time as it is maintaining even a modicum of gravitas.

"Facebook" what a great role model... it's even worse than 4-chan.

the stuff already here works?

Dec-11-21  George Wallace: <Jessica Tunafish Queen>, hate to tell you, but it's practically 2022, not 2002. You either move with the times, bringing your website up to user expectations, or you will be left behind for good.

The whole rest of the internet can upload images with their comments, not just Facebook.

There are a dozen or so old geezers here who don't want any changes, still don't trust emails lols - but the rest of the world is younger, and all the generation z kids will be taking over soon, and they grew up with the internet and have different expectations.

The social interactions need to be fun and people expect to be able to express themselves with images and memes.

You can't fight progress; you have to move with it, not against it.
