<MissScarlett> I wondered something similar in the wee hours last night when I noticed that cg.com had gone down again. This was confirmed by the handy, and trusty, IS IT DOWN RIGHT NOW website... Luckily the site was only down for a few hours. I would think it more likely that the admins were doing some work that required a temporary shutdown, as opposed to there being another attack on us by juggalos or other malcontents procreating on the public dime. It could have been either, of course. At any rate we are back up! |

 | | MissScarlett: I also have the vague impresssion that the site's been quieter since the start of fighting in Ukraine. If chess is war by other means, that would make sense. <Miss Susan>, I don't know if you're big on site metrics, but perhaps you comment. Of course there will be other factors which contribute to such fluctuations. |

 | | Susan Freeman: The site was down due to an error in renewing the domain name. It had nothing to do with network solutions but ICAN
Just a small bump.
Yes, the traffic has been slightly less lately. But it is variable anyhow.
Not sure if it has to do with Ukraine.
Demographics indicate Eastern European visitors are a small percentage. |

 | | Susan Freeman: Having said that, the entire world is on edge and possibly diverting the attention. |

<z>
Your post chessgames.com chessforum (kibitz #37681) more properly belongs on Rogoff. This is not the place to take a gratuitous political swipe at another member. |

I appreciate your principles <z> believe me, and thank you for acting on my request. Many people, maybe even all people, are feeling extra anxious at this time, for obvious reasons. |

| Mar-26-22 | | Z free or die: OK, the last one got deleted too - hope you caught the Britney joke! After all, we don't want the forum to turn:

| Mar-26-22 | | Z free or die: <The site was down due to an error in renewing the domain name.> You know, one must be careful with this one. Squatters have been known to take sites off-line for extended periods of time whilst ginning up their resale price for return of DN to the previous holder. . |

<Susan> you'd better find a way to keep <Harry Lime> and his many, many sockpuppets out of here because it's really unpleasant to work under these conditions. Look at the latest hourly deposit: Biographer Bistro This is a terrible advert for the website, not to mention it's making it unpleasant to work in the Bistro. Because Harry has so many sockpuppets, it will be necessary to ban him at the URL level. You might have to ask <Stephen> about that. Simply cleaning his crap out of the Biographer's Bistro will not work- you do not have enough hours in the day to do this because he'll just re-post all of it, and more, a few minutes later. This is not a new problem, it's been like this almost a week now and whatever you think you might be doing to solve this problem, it obviously isn't working. If you can't do something about this now, it will get worse and worse. People will think you have "no teeth" and just walk all over you, as they are doing at the present moment. Please keep the Biographer's Bistro clear of spam or your editors may begin looking for another chess website to publish their work. I'm really not interested in what "you're going to do" about this. I am only interested in an actual resolution of the problem. |

<Susan>
This is far from the first time this has happened, although it is in fact the first time <Harry> has been involved. I post now because I was thinking back about the times this has happened before, and what <Daniel> did about it. There are two public fora at chessgames.com that <Daniel> set up for us, and gave us the password to, so that we could administer them ourselves without bugging him every 10 seconds: ChessBookForum chessforum
WCC Editing Project chessforum
In both of these fora there is me and 3-4 other members who have the password. So if anything gets out of hand in the forum, we simply put the offender(s) on ignore. The elegance of this solution is that if you give a few of the editors the password to the <Biographer's Bistro>, we could get rid of Harry and his army of sockpuppes in a few seconds. I know most of his socks as well, which would be a bonus. However they are not hard to spot, so I needn't be one of those who had the password. <MissScarlett>, <jnpope>, <tabanus>, <stonehenge>, <zanzibar> any or all of these stalwarts would do fine as administrators of the Biographer's Bistro. I would also be happy to serve as an administrator, but that's far from my main concern here. Another elegant aspect to this solution is that if you do this, you would never have to do anything about the current problem in the <Biographer's Bistro> ever again. It was <Daniel> who came up with this solution in the past during similar uproars. As he put it so eloquently, it is almost impossible to "get rid" of an offending member because "you can't ban someone from Google." Shortly after this observation, Daniel and several members set up the two fora I refer to. The ChessBookforum is still active, I see. The WCC forum is awaiting members who might want to restart work on that project. It has not seen any active work for several years now. Anyways food for thought eh? |

At present, here is the relaxing place I go to work to every day: Biographer Bistro (kibitz #24262) <harrylime: <<jessicafischerqueen: <Colleagues>
I have known <Harry> for years and I also know almost all his sockpuppets, though they are easily recognized, as you might suspect.>>Put me on ignore lol lol

 | | jnpope: I would not want to play "hall monitor" mainly due to then needing to read stuff from those on my ignore-list. However I still endorse CG creating an Editors forum restricted to the Volunteer Editors (and the forceful promotion of Z to editor status). |
